Chapter 5: [Philosopher’s Stone] – Mr. Weasley, Chosen by the Dragon Wand
In this place filled with medieval-style brick buildings,
it looked like a western-style marketplace.
“Diagon Alley!”
Ron and I were wandering around with excitement, exploring the area. Fred, George, and Ginny, who hadn’t been here in a while, seemed quite excited too.
“You lot! We’re only here to get your school supplies! No wandering off!”
“Mum! Please, can we at least get some snacks…”
“Ron! Move it!”
Ron, being his age, was lurking around where they sold delicious snacks, but Mum quickly dragged him off to Gringotts Bank (the wizarding bank run by goblins).
Meanwhile, I took the opportunity to ‘innocently’ ask Fred and George a question, pretending not to know the truth.
“…You know I don’t trust you two, right?”
“Oof… When our little brother comes at us like this, it hurts, you know?”
“Yeah, why is he looking at us with such suspicious eyes all of a sudden?”
“….Come on, tell me the truth. How do third-year Hogwarts students, last year’s second-years, manage to earn 30 Galleons?”
“…Ouch… When you accuse us like that, it really stings—”
“It’s obvious. You guys were up to all sorts of tricks, trying to make toys or whatever.”
“….”
As someone who knows the original story, I’m well aware that in the future, Fred and George would successfully start a huge joke shop, becoming the most prominent joke shop CEOs in the British wizarding world.
But—
‘…Fred dies in the final battle… and it’s so—‘
“Hey… George? Our little brother is looking at me with a sad expression. Bro? What are you even thinking right now—”
Fred and George, always playful and mischievous, yet loyal to the core, meet a sad fate in the final battle. Especially George, whose personality changes drastically after losing Fred, his other half.
Fred, feeling uneasy under my gaze, tries to explain himself, but—
“I don’t care what you two do at school.”
“….”
“You always cause trouble at home, and Mum said there were a lot of times when you got into so much trouble at school that she got letters from the professors and was furious.”
“…My little brother’s words are hitting hard today.”
“I’m feeling the same, Fred…”
Honestly, I don’t mind if my two brothers mess around or pull pranks, as long as it doesn’t cause serious trouble. I would always like to be on their side. Not just one of them, but both Fred and George running a joke shop together.
“Brothers. Since Mum is busy for a moment, I’ll say this.”
“…”
I wanted to keep watching the joke shop run by the fully united Weasley twins, both of them alive.
“When Ron and I enter Hogwarts, you better take good care of us. I’ll help with that ‘Joke business’ you two are running.”
“!?”
“You think I’m stiff and uncomfortable like Percy at home, don’t you?”
Maybe because they knew I was onto their plans, the two twins looked shocked as I spoke, glancing back at them.
“When I enter Hogwarts, I’ll be more out of control than you two, just so you know.”
When I said it with a tone that suggested I was looking forward to causing mischief with them, the surprised twins grinned and replied:
“If that’s what our little brother wishes~”
“Oh! We, as his brothers, must help him out, right?”
Despite how things might appear on the surface, my relationship with Fred and George wasn’t stiff. Having lived in the Weasley family for 11 years, I had already become quite like them—although I don’t mind that.
===================
After stopping by Gringotts with Mum to withdraw some Galleons, we explored Diagon Alley thoroughly.
We got all the necessary supplies, of course—
“Mum, can I buy this book?”
“Hmm? Let me see… Oh dear, isn’t this too difficult for you to read?”
“It’s fine. Plus, it’s on sale for about 10 Knuts, so with 2 Sickles, I can get the whole set.”
“Oh my, it really is cheap, isn’t it? Alright, fine. Ahh~ if only George and Fred were a bit more like you…”
I managed to get a set of four books at a great price, which I spotted while browsing the bookstore. These were essential items for the ‘personal schedule’ I had planned once I entered Hogwarts.
Meanwhile, as I was picking out books, Ron, Fred, and George were still hanging around the snack shop, and Ginny was looking at combs and accessories in a general goods store.
Each of us was buying the things we wanted and needed, and eventually, we met up with Dad, who had joined us later.
“Sorry for being late! Phew! There was so much inventory to sort today, I ended up delayed.”
“It’s fine. We bought most of what we needed with Mum, and even though it was a bit pricey, we also made a reservation with the house repair company.”
“Hmm… Ginny, Fred, and George must have had a rough time, but our Pell has really worked hard.”
“Not at all~”
Fred, George, and Ron made sounds of discontent and jeered, but Mum’s additional testimony soon shut them up, while Ginny, who had gotten the items she wanted, greeted Dad with a happy face.
Now, the only thing left was—
“…I’m so jealous! If only I’d drawn the right card that time!”
“Ooooh, Ronnie~ I’m sorry, but life is all about the winners.”
“Exactly~ Poor Ronnie has been unlucky since childhood, huh, George?”
“Ahh, these annoying brothers! Can’t do anything about them… Seriously!”
A wand—the most iconic item in the Harry Potter universe!
Most wands were made of wood, ranging up to 15 inches—those that were 16 inches or longer were usually meant for people with particularly large physiques.
‘Dragon heartstring, phoenix feather, unicorn hair… Those were the basics, right?’
As any Harry Potter fan would know, the core of a wand mattered. Phoenix feathers were considered special and rare, but dragon heartstrings and unicorn tail hairs were most common.
‘Well… since all the Weasleys have used unicorn hair, I shouldn’t expect anything too special.’
But still, how exciting is it? Unlike Ron, who had to wait until third year to get his own wand, I had the opportunity to get one right from the start—
‘Besides, isn’t the romanticism of having my own wand the best part? Hehehe.’
As a Harry Potter fan, owning and using a real wand was the ultimate dream.
==================
Ding~
“Ollivander! Are you here?”
The whole family entered the shop. Though it appeared small for seven people, it didn’t feel cramped once inside. Everywhere I looked, there were long, rectangular boxes stacked up high. These were none other than the wands, the most iconic items in the Harry Potter universe.
An elderly man, who had been rummaging in the corner, revealed himself at Dad’s greeting.
“Oh, isn’t it Arthur and Molly? And you’ve brought the mischievous twins, as well as the others?”
“Yes, our sixth and seventh sons are entering Hogwarts this year.”
“Ho ho~ Time certainly flies. So, are you here to get wands for both?”
“Unfortunately, we’ll only be fitting one today. Finances are tight…”
Mom and Dad exchanged pleasantries with the elderly man, the owner of the wand shop and the most renowned wand maker, Garrick Ollivander. He then turned his attention to Ron and me.
“Ho ho, one of them doesn’t look like a typical Weasley boy.”
“Oh no, don’t say that! He’s the most mature and responsible of all our boys~”
“Ha ha ha ha ha.”
Ollivander fixed his gaze on me. At first glance, he seemed like a kind old man, but—
‘…What’s with those eyes?’
It felt as though he was peering deep inside me, and I found it a bit unsettling. He looked me over with those piercing eyes before disappearing into the back of the shop.
“Hmm… I’ve crafted and sold many wands over the years, but… never have I met such a unique child as him.”
“…What? What do you mean by that…?”
Before Mom and Dad could voice their confusion, Ollivander handed me a wand that gave off a faint blue glow.
“Here, try this one first. Ash wood, 12 inches, with a unicorn hair core. Quite flexible and cool to the touch.”
The moment I grabbed the wand, he swiftly took it back.
“No, that’s not it. The wand didn’t like that at all. Let’s try red oak, 13 inches, unicorn hair… Hmm, too much resistance.”
“…….”
“Cypress, 15 inches, unicorn hair. Oh my! The wand’s so tense, it’s gone stiff!”
“Um…”
“Hmm… Willow, 14 inches, unicorn hair. Ah, this one won’t do either… The wand is rejecting you.”
Ollivander quickly took back four of the five wands he had brought out. All of them shared one common factor—each had a unicorn hair core. Mom, Dad, my brothers, and even Ron and Ginny were surprised at how quickly four wands had been rejected.
“Hmm… The last one. Olive wood, 14 inches, unicorn hair. Oh no, this is the worst reaction I’ve ever seen. I’m sorry, child. Please wait a moment!”
Ollivander, his face turning a bit pale, rushed back into the shop. Mom and Dad exchanged worried looks as they watched the scene unfold.
“…It’s taking a long time, isn’t it?”
“…Fred and George didn’t have this much trouble, and neither did Percy or Charlie.”
“Bill found his match on the third try… Do you think Pell could be an extraordinary wizard?”
“…It’s not impossible, but if this takes too long, the boy might start feeling anxious…”
Fred and George seemed to find the situation amusing and were placing bets in secret, while Ginny and Ron, growing tired, began yawning and sat down on the shop’s chairs.
After waiting a few more seconds, Ollivander returned with six more wands in hand.
“Given your physique and aura, a longer wand might suit you. Let’s try spruce, 13 inches, unicorn hair… Oh dear, this isn’t right either.”
“Uh… This…”
“Hawthorn, 13 inches, unicorn hair… nope, not this one. Hornbeam, 14 inches, unicorn hair… drat, not this one either.”
“Uh… I’m sorry?”
“Hmm… Most of the Weasley family use unicorn hair cores… I thought I’d try something different…”
After two failed attempts, Ollivander concluded that the core of the wand might be the issue, so he brought out two dragon heartstring wands and two phoenix feather wands.
“Redwood, 15 inches, phoenix feather… unbelievable… The wand doesn’t just dislike it, it’s outright rejecting it. This is a first.”
“……”
Fueled by determination, Ollivander disappeared into the back again. George and Fred were growing bored, and even Mum and Dad were getting restless.
It felt like we might end up spending the whole day just trying to find the right wand.
“…Hmm? What’s that box?”
I noticed a peculiar box—specifically, an old, worn-out box attached to the ceiling near the counter.
“Oh! You’ve waited long enough! Here, try this wand—”
“Excuse me, but… is that a wand box up there?”
“Huh? What do you… Oh my! Why is that box—?!”
Unlike the others, the box emitted a yellowish glow—it looked almost like it was made of… leather?
All the other wand boxes around were made of paper, but this one stood out with its stitched leather appearance. When I asked Ollivander about it, his reaction was one of surprise, and he hurriedly tried to put it away.
Rumble… thud-thud-thud-thud~
“……”
“Oh no! Boy, hand that box over!”
Several boxes from the top shelf came tumbling down, and that leather box landed right at my feet, opening as it hit the ground.
The box looked grotesque, as if it had been sewn together from patches of flesh. The sight of it made my whole family grimace in disgust.
“…Is this a wand?”
“Wha… What? This… this can’t be…”
From the box, a wand poked out—it looked almost like a row of sharp teeth.
It had a design that seemed familiar yet strange, and I couldn’t stop staring at it. When I picked it up—
FWOOOSH——!
“Ah!”
“…Wow!”
“Oh my goodness!”
“…This… could it be?”
A fierce, beast-like flame swirled around me, like a billowing cloak caught in the wind, and then it vanished just as quickly.
Mum, Dad, my brothers, even Ollivander—everyone was stunned.
“My word… The ‘Great Dragon’s Wand’ has chosen you?”
It seemed like my wand was something special. Ollivander looked at the wand in my hand, dumbfounded, and then weakly said,
“…A 14-inch alder wand, 700 years old… I can’t believe it… this fierce wand has chosen you.”
“Se… Seven hundred years?! Wait, doesn’t that make it practically ancient?”
“Ho ho… yes, it’s an ancient tree… but the core is even more extraordinary.”
“The core?”
Regaining his composure, Ollivander explained:
“Typically, wands are made with dragon heartstring… the tendons from a dragon’s heart. But this wand? It has the ‘lungs’ of a dragon.”
“L-lungs?!”
“Ho ho… yes, I was skeptical myself as a wand maker. But the real surprise? The owner of these lungs.”
…
…
…
…
…
“A thousand-year-old dragon—the ‘Hungarian Horntail’—that’s whose lungs are in this wand. Ho ho ho…”
Authors Note:
“Hungarian Horntail: In the Harry Potter universe, it’s the nastiest, most ill-tempered Dragon species, basically a psychopathic bully among dragons. The image is of a magic wand crafted by the author Himself.
It’s not Voldemort’s wand.”
