Chapter 3
Boom!
With a massive explosion, Reina rolled across the ground.
“Ugh….”
In front of the girl stood a grey werewolf. Though not as gigantic as the frog monster, the aura it emitted was incomparable to the frog monster.
Truly, she seemed to have terrible luck. To encounter such a monster at this moment.
But it didn’t matter. Today, it would still be fine.
‘Because I gained a fan for the first time.’
To the girl, this meant a lot. It signified that for the first time, someone had recognized the effort she had been putting in, despite being ignored and overlooked.
Therefore, she couldn’t fall. Though her opponent was clearly much stronger than she was, giving up easily would be a disservice to her fan.
— [Heh heh, what on earth are you thinking, trying to stop me? There’s a limit to stupidity. You’re no match for me. Surely you’re not dumb enough to be unaware of the vast difference between us?]
Reina quietly gazed at the monster. Then, her green eyes, transformed by the magic, sparkled as she spoke.
“I know… that I’m much weaker than you.”
— [Then why aren’t you running away? If you’re thinking of committing suicide, I wouldn’t recommend it. I’m thinking of making you so miserable that you’ll wish for a quick death.]
“Ha, I have no intention of dying. Especially not to someone like you.”
She would endure. Nothing else mattered. This was Seoul, after all. Help would likely arrive soon. So all she had to do was buy enough time to prevent the monster from harming anyone.
That was it—no other thoughts were necessary. As long as help arrived and she ensured no one was hurt by this monster, that would be her victory.
— [Ha, look at you, so confident. For a measly magical girl!]
“Yeah, I’m only a C-rank and not very popular. I’m much weaker compared to someone like you. But still, it’s fine.”
The girl pointed her Magic Staff at the monster.
“Because today’s a lucky day.”
The werewolf rushed toward her at incredible speed. Too fast for the eye to fully capture. But Reina, with deep concentration, managed to track the werewolf’s trajectory.
“Hyaaat!”
Boom!
A magical blast collided with the werewolf. It was too weak to cause any real damage—just a small-scale magic attack without a proper chant.
But it was enough to alter the werewolf’s trajectory.
The werewolf crashed into a building. Despite slamming into the concrete wall, the monster casually shook it off and stood up as if nothing had happened.
— […What the?]
“Well, why don’t you figure it out yourself?”
The monster charged once again. Reina used another magical blast to divert the werewolf’s path, sending it crashing into the ground.
‘As I thought….’
Just as expected. Monsters are created when ordinary humans suddenly make a pact with a seed of evil. This meant that, in most cases, monsters had little to no real combat experience.
The werewolf monster in front of her was the same. Its incredible speed and strength were undoubtedly impressive, but it didn’t know how to properly utilize them, merely charging at her recklessly. It couldn’t even control its own speed.
In that case, simply twisting its trajectory slightly would be enough to prevent the werewolf from attacking her. The result was always the same—the monster would crash into something, unable to manage its own momentum.
The werewolf, still oblivious to this, rushed at her once again.
It charged, charged, charged.
It crashed, crashed, crashed.
The life-and-death rally continued until the werewolf finally raised the white flag in defeat.
— [Fine, I’ll admit it—I can’t seem to land a hit on you, no matter what you’ve done.]
Despite saying that, the werewolf monster still looked as lively as ever. Even after all the crashes, it remained unfazed. Truly, its durability was monstrous.
Reina clicked her tongue and gripped her Magic Staff tightly. Each second felt like an hour. In the slow motion of time, she caught sight of the werewolf monster’s sly grin.
— [In that case, I’ll just attack someone else instead of you!]
The werewolf pointed toward a citizen who hadn’t managed to escape in time.
The monster began its charge. Reina hesitated briefly. It was obvious this was a trap.
The werewolf’s speed was almost impossible for her to track with her eyes. But now, it was moving far slower than usual—as if taunting her to come and try to stop it.
— “H-Heeek!”
Her hesitation was short. What kind of magical girl would she be if she didn’t protect the people terrified before her?
Reina immediately gave chase, blocking the monster’s path.
— [Got you!]
Her barrier tore like paper. The werewolf’s front paw slammed her down onto the ground with terrifying ease.
“Ugh—Kah!”
— [So, you must have had a good laugh watching me mess around. Well, let’s see if you can block this. If you can’t, your insides will spill out all over the place.]
She had to raise her Magic Staff. She had to block the attack. Those were her thoughts. But—
‘I… can’t breathe….’
The girl felt it—the end. How pitiful. This was the second time already. Not long after the last attack, here she was again. What face could she show her fan after this?
But at least, she had protected the people. Maybe that was enough. Even though no further chances would come.
And at that moment—
Slice—the werewolf’s arm was cut off.
— [W-What?]
The monster didn’t even react. No, it hadn’t even realized what had happened. The werewolf could only stare dumbfounded at its severed arm and the blood splattering everywhere before it finally let out a delayed scream.
— [Graaaargh!!]
The agonized cry filled the air. The magical girl, lying on the ground, stared in shock at the one who had cut off the werewolf’s arm.
“A-Ah….”
The Black Knight. Once again, he appeared before her eyes.
— [You, you. Who the hell are you? Why are you suddenly… What’s going on!]
The werewolf monster shouted in panic, but the Black Knight silently stared at it for a moment before speaking.
[That magical girl is my prey.]
At that moment, Reina felt her blood run cold. She understood all too well just what kind of monster the Black Knight was.
The Black Knight was silent for a while, then spoke again.
[But this isn’t enough. You’re still not ripe yet. If this is all it takes for you to stop, then there’s no hope.]
Murmuring to himself, he nodded a few times before saying,
[Alright, I’ve decided. If you, werewolf, can kill the magical girl here despite your missing arm, I’ll let you live.]
The werewolf growled furiously.
— [Don’t make me laugh! Who do you think you are to—]
Slice.
Before anyone realized, the werewolf’s other arm had also been severed.
— [Graaaargh!]
As the werewolf knelt in agony, the Black Knight spoke.
[Yes, this feels more balanced now. After all, there’s a clear difference in our levels.]
The werewolf growled in frustration, then turned its head to look back—toward where Reina stood. It seemed to have realized that its only chance for survival was to kill Reina.
Once again, the werewolf charged. But Reina deflected its attack with a quick movement. Panting heavily, the girl started to think.
The sudden appearance of the Black Knight was unexpected, but it hadn’t made the situation worse. In fact, there was one major upside: the werewolf was no longer targeting the civilians. That was a huge relief.
Of course, if the Black Knight changed his mind, it would all be over, but she couldn’t afford to dwell on that possibility. After all, she had no power to stop him. She recalled someone mentioning that the Black Knight was classified as an A-rank threat. Maybe only someone like Bing Seol-hwa could stand a chance against him.
But that was a problem for later. Right now, she had to focus on the werewolf. Reina continued dodging and evading its attacks.
With both of its front legs severed, the only way the werewolf could attack was by biting. That made it easier for her to defend herself. If she just kept stalling, she could hold out indefinitely.
‘-No.’
That wouldn’t be enough. The Black Knight seemed intent on ensuring that either she or the werewolf would die. Even if reinforcements arrived, they would likely be wiped out by the disinterested Black Knight before they could help her.
That meant the only option was for her to defeat the werewolf here and now.
But for now, she was barely managing to dodge. She needed something more—she needed a gamble.
Her decision was quick. As the werewolf charged closer, she didn’t block its approach.
The werewolf mistook this as a sign that Reina could no longer defend herself. But Reina had a different plan in mind.
Boom!
An explosion erupted. Reina unleashed her most powerful offensive spell at point-blank range. Even though it was her own magic, the blast was strong enough to send her flying.
“Gah!”
But she got back up. And when she looked ahead—
Her gamble had paid off. The werewolf, its mouth agape, had taken the full brunt of her magic head-on. Its head had been blown clean off. Even with such an intense magical attack, the fact that only its head had been destroyed showed just how much of a monster the creature had been.
The Black Knight, who had been watching quietly, vanished without a trace once again.
