Chapter 31
A bookshelf lined with countless books,
A desk piled high with research papers,
And here and there, wizards walking around for their research.
However, at this moment, none of the robed wizards cared about the person who had just entered. They merely glanced over with dull, dead eyes before returning to their work.
These people had no interest in anything but their own work.
“I’ve heard that wizards tend to be indifferent like this, but seeing it firsthand… It’s a strange feeling.”
Arc Royle, who had just wiped out the monsters in a mere three minutes, thought to herself. Having sent the child away, the beasts created by humans posed no threat to her now.
Afterwards, she returned to the research lab inside the magic tower, quietly observing the situation while feeling some slight unease at the excessive indifference from the humans around her.
“Hmm… Maybe I should read something, gather some information at least…”
She reached out toward the bookshelf with this thought. But then…
Ding! Ding! Ding!
“!”
“…Hmm.”
“Is it time already?”
At the sound of the bell, the wizards immediately put down their books and pens and started heading somewhere.
Seeing this sudden change, Arc Royle wondered if the experiment was finally about to begin and decided to follow the group.
They arrived at a large glass wall located on one side of the laboratory. Until now, it had been shrouded in darkness, so she hadn’t paid much attention to it. But now, people stood in front of it, notebooks and pens in hand.
Arc Royle mimicked their actions, taking notes as well.
-Flash!-
Suddenly, bright lights illuminated the area, and what appeared before Arc Royle left her momentarily speechless.
“What… What is that…?”
Dreams are the happiest when they are being pursued.
But after attaining that dream, all that remains is a fleeting sense of bittersweet satisfaction mixed with the harsh reality that follows—a reality full of painful truths.
The truth is that what seems like the culmination of happiness is often just the beginning of greater suffering.
In this respect, a wizard named Obelia Solt, who had once longed to enter the Magic Tower of Somora and had finally achieved her dream, sighed at the stark contrast between her dreams and the grueling reality.
“Hmm?”
As she pondered this, her eyes fell on a new figure. Like the others in the tower, this person was wearing a wizard’s robe and was rather tall. Though this must be a new recruit—someone who could access this secure area through protective spells—Obelia, like the others, didn’t pay much attention to them.
After all, in this place, everyone found their own way and pursued their own research without much interference.
“Another one to rot here with us, I suppose,” she thought.
Pushing aside the book she was holding, Obelia sighed. Though there was still more work to organize, there were only three minutes left before the next experiment.
The bell would ring at the precise time, but Obelia preferred to move ahead of schedule, eager to observe them for as long as possible…
Ding! Ding! Ding!
With the sound of the bell, the others in the room began to rise and head toward the same place. The lights flickered on, illuminating a glass wall overlooking a space about three meters below.
There, in that space, was a group of “them.”
Clad in white robes, each holding a sword at their side, they emitted a faint, holy aura.
“Angels.”
These were the messengers of the heavens, beings known as the shards of the Supreme God. Rarely seen even in the continent, there were now thirty of these winged beings on the other side of the glass.
The peculiar thing was that they all had identical appearances.
Pink hair,
A face that was rather pretty, but gaunt as though they hadn’t eaten for days, resembling a frail human girl.
Their eyes were hollow, devoid of any emotion.
It was as if 30 twins stood in one place, creating a grotesque scene.
However, none of the wizards, including Obelia, felt anything special about it.
Well, perhaps there was one exception — the newcomer who had just arrived earlier.
As Obelia pushed aside the meaningless thoughts, she gazed down at the angels, their vacant expressions betraying nothing.
Soon, her attention was drawn to a middle-aged man who stepped forward in front of the angels.
He was the great wizard, Gei,
The head wizard of Somora and the one in charge of this experiment.
With his disciples standing on either side of him, he addressed the angels in a stiff voice.
“Now, we will begin the 66th experiment. Thirty minutes from now, only one of you standing here will be given food.”
At his words, a slight shift in the atmosphere could be felt from the angels.
Watching their reactions, Gei’s lips twisted into a cold smile.
“You understand what this means, don’t you?”
“From this moment, kill each other.”
-Splat!
As soon as the words fell, blood began to spurt in all directions.
The 30 angels, without a hint of emotion, immediately drew the swords at their waists and attacked the ones beside them.
They stabbed into necks,
Cut off arms and legs,
And thrust swords into eyes.
Like wild beasts tearing into each other,
They mercilessly slaughtered their own kind—
Their sisters.
Not a single one of them uttered a complaint.
As if this was something completely natural.
Some even, driven by hunger, tore into their opponents’ flesh and drank their blood.
“…Hmph.”
It was a gruesome scene, a perfect representation of chaos and hell.
Watching this, Obelia let out a small sigh.
What it contained was a faint yet dry sense of disgust.
A primal revulsion that any human would feel.
Yet, even amidst the carnage, she, like the other wizards, continued to quickly jot down notes, recording the details of the ‘experiment.’
Average reaction times,
Time it took for one to die after being struck in a vital area,
And, of course, who would be the last one standing.
Then…
[What…what is this? What…what the hell are you doing?]
“…”
“Hah…”
A trembling voice, filled with shock and fear, came from the newcomer.
Watching the expected reaction, Obelia briefly put down her notes and reached out to take the newcomer’s hand.
[What…what are you…?]
“Come with me. Don’t disturb the others.”
Though she knew the newcomer was shocked, the experiment was still in progress.
Not wanting the disturbance to continue, Obelia led her away and soon reached a nearby break room.
[Huff…huff…]
The newcomer was still shaking, breathing heavily.
It felt somewhat strange to see someone so tall and lanky acting like this, but it wasn’t something Obelia couldn’t understand.
After all, she had reacted similarly the first time she witnessed such a scene.
“Calm down. It’s always like this at first. You’ll get used to it after a few days…ugh!”
Suddenly, the newcomer reached out and grabbed Obelia by the neck.
The strength in that grip was overwhelming, and Obelia felt her breath being cut off as she desperately tried to cast a spell.
But—
‘What…what’s going on? My…my magic…why isn’t it working?’
It didn’t work.
It was as if an enormous force was crushing her, breaking her spell before it could even be cast.
And within that suffocating moment, Obelia finally saw it.
The burning hatred in the newcomer’s eyes,
The pink hair and pink eyes beneath the robe,
A face she had seen far too many times before.
“You…you’re…?”
[Tell me everything you know.]
*
Among the shamanistic practices of the East, there is a spell known as ‘Godo.’ Also referred to as ‘Mugo,’ the method of this curse is as follows:
You place numerous venomous creatures inside a jar. The types of creatures can vary, from insects to small monsters, and the more there are, the better. Once the jar is filled with poisonous creatures, you seal the lid. From that moment, the creatures inside the jar begin to devour each other, driven by hunger and their instinct to survive.
Until only one creature remains.
The last surviving creature, having absorbed the hatred and venom of the others, becomes imbued with an immense grudge and poison. Using this creature to cast a curse is considered one of the most forbidden and dangerous curses, often labelled as the worst of its kind.
And now…
The experiment being conducted on the numerous Angelculus is based on this very concept of ‘Godo.’
The artificially created, weak Angelculus possess the ability to absorb a portion of the power from those they kill. This ability is akin to the divine absorption powers of gods.
With these characteristics, and inspired by the Godo curse, Gei, the head wizard of the Magic Tower, devised the current experiment. These immature angels, as imperfect beings of immortality, require food for survival. By making them kill and consume one another, their powers are unified and concentrated.
The resulting Angelculus that survives such a process becomes far stronger than the others. By gathering these enhanced beings again for another round of experiments, they grow even more powerful.
During this process, it’s essential to brainwash and bind them with magic and drugs. Although they have yet to reach the level of a true archangel, the wizards are confident that they will soon achieve this goal with such methods.
Of course, they paid no attention to the amount of pure blood spilled on the floor during the process.
“They… they aren’t real angels anyway! They’re nothing more than test subjects, mere winged beasts created by humans.”
“They’re nothing more, nothing less.”
“Do I feel sorry for them? I do, but what can I do? Experiments require sacrifices. It’s all for the advancement of magic…”
Then—
BANG!
Before she could finish her words, Obelia Solt’s head exploded, tears welling in her eyes as she smiled in twisted resignation.
And as she watched the now-useless lump of flesh lying on the ground, Arc Royle’s pink eyes began to turn blood-red.
[I’m sorry… I’m really… really sorry…]
Her voice trembled with pain, despair, and guilt.
And with that, divine power began to flow from Arc Royle’s body.
A thick, murderous aura filled the air, potent enough to annihilate an army of ten thousand. The divine power, tinged in a dark crimson hue, radiated from her.
[I will kill them all…. Not a single one will survive…. All of them.]
