Chapter 3
About twenty minutes later, Princess Muriela was waiting for her meal.
With her tiny hands, she held her growling stomach.
‘When is the food coming? How long could it possibly take to cook a steak? It should be here soon, right?’
Whether old or young, tall or short, noble or commoner, the feeling of waiting for food when you’re hungry is the same for everyone.
As the food took longer than expected, Solinor’s eyes wandered around the room.
The small, round table in Muriela’s personal dining room, built specifically for her.
No matter how you looked at it, the table was only large enough to seat four or five people.
And there were only four chairs around it.
Solinor thought it was quite strange.
During his life, mealtimes were always noisy affairs.
As an adventurer, he would eat with his companions amidst lively chatter.
Even after becoming king, the same applied.
His wife, Aiorin, the attendants, and the maids all shared meals together in a bustling environment.
According to his noble-born comrades, in other countries, people ate separately based on their social class.
But who cares what others do? Silbrenoa was Solinor’s country, and here, things were different.
That was his policy.
He didn’t reject the idea of social classes but didn’t institutionalize excessive discrimination based on status either.
In any case, during Solinor’s time, Silbrenoa had very few noble families.
There were only four titles, granted to his adventurer comrades.
The rest were chiefs and local warlords.
That was the nature of the country of Silbrenoa.
It was a federation of tribes built on the barren land around the Fey Forest in the far north.
It had a small population and little economic power.
Even the royal palace, the grandest building, was no better than a modest noble’s villa in other countries.
Of course, by the third year of Solinor’s reign, the situation had changed drastically.
A vast supply of high-grade resources, mana stones, had begun to be mined from the icy plains in the north.
The economy skyrocketed.
There must have been many changes after Solinor’s death as well.
Now, it seemed not only the economy had grown but also the social hierarchy had become much stricter.
From what Solinor remembered, his comrades treated their servants and subordinates like friends.
They joked around and sometimes went on walks or played games together.
In his country, status was more of a nominal concept than anything else.
But what was this scene before him?
Looking at Muriela’s maid, Bianca,
She stood in the corner of the dining room, head bowed, waiting.
It was clear that someone of her lowly status couldn’t even imagine sitting at the table with a princess,
Even though three empty chairs remained.
Of course, Solinor was mistaken in his thinking.
Muriela, always frail and with no appetite, never ate alone.
It was Bianca’s daily job to sit beside her and feed her directly.
But today, Bianca was different.
For the first time since she began serving Princess Muriela, she was certain she wouldn’t have to feed her.
She had seen the strong will in Muriela’s eyes earlier.
Her only task was to watch from afar.
If anything, she felt like a mother watching her baby take its first steps into the world!
It was an audacious feeling for a mere maid to have.
But no one can punish you for what’s in your heart, right? As long as you don’t say it out loud.
Just then, the chef entered the dining room.
Thanks to Muriela’s memories, Solinor knew he was the chef, but not his name.
With a respectful demeanor, the chef placed a metal dome on the table, something Solinor had never seen before.
“Princess, your beef steak as requested.”
The chef grabbed the protruding part of the metal dome and lifted it.
Beneath was a hot, steaming beef steak and a small salad.
Then, without making proper eye contact with Muriela, he backed away and stood in a similar posture to Bianca, across from her.
Princess Muriela sat there for a moment, doing nothing.
Solinor’s mind was momentarily overwhelmed by the unfamiliar scene.
‘What are these people doing? And why is the steak so small? It’s barely a bite! Who could possibly be satisfied with this? Is this some sort of protest for ordering the wrong menu?’
Questions poured into his mind.
In reality, the chef, like Bianca, was overwhelmed with emotion.
He had always felt sorry for the princess, who was even younger than his second daughter, constantly picking at her food with a sorrowful expression.
But now, after three years, this was the first time she had actually made an order.
The joy of thinking the princess had finally regained her appetite overwhelmed him.
For the first time, his job satisfaction, which had been at rock bottom, rose slightly.
Still, he had kept the portion small, considering the condition of Princess Muriela’s stomach.
She always ate tiny portions of soft food, so a heavy meal like steak would be overwhelming for her.
But to Solinor, the portion was far too small.
There was no way such a small piece would satisfy him, so he couldn’t help but ask for more.
“Chef, bring more steak. Could you? Will you? Please?”
Upon hearing this, the chef’s eyes filled with tears.
It was the first time he had seen the princess show any real desire for food.
After taking a moment to compose himself, he answered in a voice still thick with emotion.
“Yes, Princess. As you wish.”
As the chef hurried back to the kitchen, Solinor only grew more confused.
‘Why do people look like they want to cry every time I say something?’
The one who really wanted to cry was Solinor.
But what could he do? He had to eat.
Muriela stabbed the steak with her fork and confidently began chewing.
However, it didn’t take long for her to realize something was wrong.
‘My jaw hurts. Why is the steak so tough?’
For someone like Solinor, a small piece of steak like this would be no challenge.
After all, his steel-like jaw had chewed through monster meat while adventuring.
But with Muriela’s untrained jaw muscles, it was like chewing rubber.
The chef had always prepared the softest soups for the princess.
For anyone, tackling steak without preparation was a tough challenge.
No matter how soft the steak had been made, it was still beef.
Its richness and chewy texture were its real charm.
But Muriela found herself struggling for a long time just to swallow that one small piece.
And then her stomach started feeling uncomfortable.
‘Seriously? I just ate, and my stomach is already upset?’
How could Solinor’s stomach, which had handled hastily cooked campfire meat, react like this?
‘Has this chef messed up? Doesn’t he know how to cook proper food for the royal family?’
But upon reflection, Solinor realized that wasn’t the case.
His stomach had been upset even before he managed to swallow the meat.
Just the oil from the steak had sent Princess Muriela’s delicate stomach into turmoil.
‘This isn’t good.’
Solinor deeply regretted ordering more.
Even finishing this portion would be a struggle.
“Bianca.”
“Yes, Princess?”
“Can I… cancel the order? Can I? Should I?”
“I’ll relay your command right away.”
After Bianca went to the kitchen, Solinor regretted once again.
He should have asked where the bathroom was first.
***
Continental Year 761, January 5th (Tuesday).
Today’s lunch for Princess Muriela was a disaster.
Had Solinor not hastily searched through Muriela’s memories to find the bathroom, things would have been much worse.
After vomiting most of the food she had eaten, Muriela was now lying in bed, resting.
Solinor was shocked by how weak his granddaughter’s body was.
What were they doing to take care of the children?
How could the health of a princess be in such poor condition?
He began to worry about the other grandchildren as well.
In Muriela’s memories, other princes and princesses also appeared.
Though they didn’t have “prince” or “princess” written on their faces, their lavish clothes made it clear.
If he looked closely, some of them seemed to resemble him.
But no matter what they looked like, to Solinor, they were all just adorable grandchildren.
Was Eldric too focused on managing state affairs, neglecting his children?
From what Solinor could see, the buildings were much larger and more luxurious than in his time, indicating that the kingdom had become much more prosperous.
Even the maid’s attire was far more refined than he remembered, and the furniture was of exceptional quality.
‘Hmm? So, is the kingdom actually doing well?’
Perhaps deciding to break Eldric’s legs was a bit hasty.
Of course, the grandchildren were important, but as king, managing the kingdom took priority.
It wasn’t a role where you were responsible for just a few lives.
Running a newly established country could keep someone so busy that they might not have time to look after their children properly.
‘Well, Eldric is my son, after all. I’m sure he’s inherited my sense of responsibility.’
As she lay in bed, Princess Muriela was smiling widely.
