Chapter 38
Ramset XIV, the ruler of the Baro Empire, had always felt uneasy about having a sibling.
The youngest sibling, who died shortly after birth.
The event occurred less than two years after their mother’s death due to childbirth complications, and it was a painful moment for Ramset, who was still a young boy at the time.
However, it was even more of a shock for his younger sister, Princess Patra.
She refused to eat and spent her days shedding endless tears.
At that time, Ramset, as her older brother, felt sympathy for his grieving sister. But…
From that day onward, Ramset’s sympathy turned into disgust.
One day, Princess Patra brought back a young Orc after her bath.
An ugly, disgusting creature, less than a worm, a mere slave.
It should have been killed without hesitation, but their father, the previous king, couldn’t bring himself to do it.
After all, his daughter, who had been on the verge of death from starvation, had regained a bit of her vitality after adopting the Orc as a “brother.”
What would happen if they got rid of that Orc now?
In the end, under Princess Patra’s protection—or rather, stubbornness—the Orc, named Mok, was given more education and care than he deserved and grew up within the palace.
At first, Ramset thought it was acceptable.
The Orc was just a toy for his sister.
As soon as she lost interest, the Orc would be disposed of.
Even if that didn’t happen, a slave was just a slave. He would never be an obstacle to Ramset’s future.
However…
Over time, Ramset’s confidence in this began to waver.
Mok became even more beloved by his sister as time passed. Instead of fading, her affection only grew stronger.
And Mok, despite being an Orc, exhibited exceptional talents and an unusual charisma.
These traits, despite him being an Orc, won over many people, even those who had initially despised him.
Even their father, the emperor, who had first looked down upon Mok, slowly began to recognize his abilities.
Eventually, Mok—an Orc—was appointed to the prestigious position of Regent for the first time in history.
He implemented outstanding policies, achieving great success, and with each success, his followers and the emperor’s trust in him only grew stronger.
Honestly, as a ruler, Ramset possessed only ordinary qualities. In contrast, Mok’s achievements were dazzling.
This stirred jealousy in Ramset‘s heart, and more than that, it caused an unsettling fear to rise within him.
It seemed impossible, but what if this Orc eventually took his place?
This fear eventually led him to raise his sword against Mok, his sister, and even Him.
Late at night, after secretly executing his plans, Ramset succeeded in securing the throne.
Though Mok managed to escape the capital due to his sister’s remarkable combat skills, the plan didn’t conclude as smoothly as Ramset had hoped.
He could have pursued Mok if he wished, but Ramset chose not to.
Though it was regrettable not to have killed Mok, Ramset found the idea of endlessly chasing after his blood-related sister and killing her distasteful.
Believing that he would never see them again, Ramset completely dismissed the incident from his mind.
But at this moment, deep regret began to fill Ramset’s heart.
Regret over not having killed them sooner…
*
The sudden appearance of Former Regent Mok and Princess-Knight Patra caused an instant stir among those in the room.
“M-Mok?”
“No…Regent Mok? And even…Princess Patra?”
“How are they…? We heard they had died…”
The officials expressed deep astonishment. Officially, it had been reported that the two had died in a sudden fire that had been labelled an “accident.” Their unexpected reappearance now filled the court with confusion and disbelief.
Even the fact that they had been brought here without being restrained was telling of the impact of their arrival.
Meanwhile, seated on the throne was Ramset XIV. A series of emotions flashed across his face in that brief moment.
First, he felt regret—regret over his foolishness for not having properly “cleaned up” due to lingering familial affection.
Then came the irritation of seeing their faces again, which he had hoped to never encounter.
Following that was the curiosity of how they had returned to the Baro Empire, a place that was essentially a death trap for them.
And finally, the strangest thought—the fact that these two were captured while preaching about some god named Seraphim.
As Ramset gazed at the unexpected pair standing before him, he quickly gathered his emotions and worked to maintain his composure.
“Hmmm… Haha. I never thought I’d see you again like this. Had I known you were alive, I might have reached out. Or were you two eloping in secret love all this time?”
“That bastard…”
At Ramset’s smug remark, Princess Patra visibly bristled, but Mok calmly held her back and replied in a steady voice.
“Well, you’re not entirely wrong. Some lunatic was trying to kill us, so we had to keep a low profile for a while.”
“A lunatic, you say? Haha. Whoever that was must have been quite bold, trying to kill people like you. It takes a lot of nerve, wouldn’t you say?”
“Yes, very bold indeed. After all, he wasn’t just after a regent and a princess, but also aimed at someone even higher up.”
There was a clear implication in Mok’s words.
Ramset’s expression briefly darkened, but he quickly recovered, feigning a relaxed attitude as he spoke in a sly voice.
“Well, such past memories aren’t important. What matters is the present. Specifically, the reason you’ve been brought here. They say you’ve been spreading faith in this so-called heretical god, Seraphim, among the Orcs. Is that true?”
“Yes, that’s true. We did.”
“What… Sister?”
“What did you say?”
“M-Mok really…?”
“Why would someone like Mok believe in such heresy…?”
Mok‘s unwavering confirmation stirred up more confusion among Patra and the officials. However, their voices soon quieted under Ramset’s gesture.
“You certainly are bold. To openly confess such blasphemy here, in the Baro Empire’s Imperial Palace, the very heart of worship to Isiris.”
Ramset smirked as he said this, clearly amused.
Internally, he had worried that Mok might twist the situation with his usual clever rhetoric.
But to Ramset’s surprise, Mok admitted to everything with no hesitation, which meant Ramset now had a legitimate reason to execute him.
Before those two had the chance to further complicate matters with their words, he could now deal with them swiftly and lawfully.
As Ramset prepared to issue an order to the nearby soldiers…
“No matter how you interpret this situation, it doesn’t concern me. I’m here as a messenger of the divine. If you refuse to accept the words of my god, this land will suffer a great calamity.”
“A messenger of the divine? Ha. Really? Then go ahead and tell me, what exactly did that heretical god of yours say?”
Ramset sneered, filled with mockery.
This time, Mok spoke with a different tone than before.
“Seraphim has decreed: as proof of their faith, the Orcs must travel to the Holy Land of Kanan Kingdom and hold a three-day ritual. If the Baro Empire’s emperor does not allow this, disaster will befall this land.”
“To Kanan Kingdom…?”
Ramset looked slightly taken aback at Mok’s words.
But soon, he burst into laughter, mocking the message.
“Hahaha! Do you seriously think I would allow such a thing? Do you think I don’t know what it means to send your slaves to Kanan Kingdom?”
“…”
“Ha…”
As expected, Ramset flatly refused.
Mok let out a small sigh as he watched.
“No more words are needed. What are the soldiers waiting for? Capture those filthy heretics and lock them all up! We will choose an appropriate day to execute them all at once!”
“As you command, Your Majesty.”
Ramset’s imperial guards immediately surrounded Mok and Princess Patra. Patra furrowed her brow in response.
‘Seriously… if only my brother had a little more sense.’
Her brother openly invoked the heretical God, Seraphim, giving a clear justification for his execution. Even without this, her brother would have found some way to trap Mok, so the result would not have been too different. But Patra didn’t like how recklessly driven by his faith her brother had become.
But what could she do? After all, it was a sister’s role to look after her brother.
With that thought, Princess Patra discreetly moved her hand toward her chest. As a princess of this nation, no one dared touch that area. She was about to draw the sword hidden within when…
“Then I shall show you. The power of Seraphim!”
“?”
Mok’s resolute declaration was followed by a sudden burst of divine power from his body. Seeing this, Princess Patra’s face turned pale with shock.
‘! That… that’s…?’
***
Ramset had ordered the punishment of Mok and Princess Patra. Even though their combat skills were well-known, Mok held only a wooden staff in one hand, and neither of them was otherwise armed. Facing the fully armed imperial guards, Ramset was certain they stood no chance.
At that moment.
“Then I shall show you the power of Seraphim!”
Mok’s declaration was steady and unwavering. With those words, he threw down the staff he had been holding. As Ramset and the soldiers watched, wondering what Mok was doing, smirks crept across their faces.
But then.
“!”
“What… What’s going on?”
It took less than a second for their smirks to turn into expressions of shock. The staff suddenly began to emit a bright light, growing longer and thicker at an alarming rate. The staff’s size expanded so rapidly that it became more than a simple weapon—it was now a terrifying entity. Its length soon took up more than half of the vast throne room.
As the light faded, the true form of the object was revealed. It was covered in pure white scales. Red eyes dotted its body in countless places. A long, blood-red tongue flicked out from its mouth, as if tasting the air while glaring down at the soldiers below. The creature’s height alone was over 10 meters, and its length was too great to even measure.
What this creature resembled was…
-Hssss….
“A… a Snake?”
“No… no way… that’s… a Legendary…”
“Apophis?”
The monster before them bore the form of the massive serpent from myth, Apophis, said to wait for the chance to devour the sun.
Though its existence had only been documented in ancient records, the sheer size of the serpent before them, which defied all common sense, was enough to instill a deep, Myth-Fuelled terror into the hearts of those who witnessed it.
-Hssss…
“Eeeek!”
“Stay… stay away! Don’t come any closer! Aahhh!!!”
The imperial guards, known for their bravery, trembled in fear. But that bravery was only for fighting other humans. No one among them had the courage to face a monstrous being of this scale. The reputation of the imperial guard was rendered meaningless as the soldiers screamed in terror.
As the massive white snake, which they assumed to be Apophis, slithered past the trembling soldiers, it slowly made its way toward the throne where the emperor sat, shaking.
Then.
-Shhhhh!
“!!!”
The giant mouth of the snake opened wide and began closing in on Ramset. Overwhelmed by the sheer terror of impending death, Ramset felt as if he couldn’t breathe.
“S-s-s-stop!!!”
Ramset screamed, his voice nearing hysteria, with his eyes tightly shut.
At that moment, the snake froze, its enormous mouth stopping just inches away from swallowing him whole. Droplets of what seemed like venom or saliva dripped from its fangs.
In the presence of this terrifying force, trembling uncontrollably, Ramset spoke in a panicked voice.
“Al-alright! I… I will allow you to perform your rituals!”
