The Magical Genius of the Marquis Family Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Ogre Perfume.

After writing down all the ingredients, Kyle called for Leonhardt.

“Can you gather the items listed on this paper? You should be able to find them at the Magic Tower or the Mercenary Guild.”

“These items, sir?”

“Yes. If you go to the Magic Tower, they’ll sell magic pouches there, so just buy one and put everything inside.”

Kyle considered using the magic materials warehouse within the Seltarion Family, but using it for such trivial matters seemed too burdensome. No matter how close one is to family, constantly taking advantage of them would leave a bad taste.

The golden connections of the family were not meant to be used for petty errands but reserved for more important times.

As Kyle handed Leonhardt a platinum coin, Leonhardt’s eyes widened.

“…Did the head of the family give this to you?”

“That’s right.”

“I understand. Then, shall I arrange for another knight to escort you while I’m gone…?”

“There’s no need. I can handle myself now.”

After all, no one was trying to assassinate Kyle—yet. And even if they did, he could defend himself well enough.

Moreover, he didn’t trust the other knights enough to call on them.

While Kyle knew of Leonhardt, who was well-known, he didn’t bother remembering the names of all the lesser knights.

“Are you not going out, Young Master?”

“I’m still under house arrest; I can’t just walk out freely, can I?”

The truth was, even stepping out of the annex had been a gamble. Kyle had taken the risk because he knew Leonhardt’s character.

But now, things were different.

Kyle’s presence was gradually becoming more noticeable, and there were quite a few vassals who had begun to resent him.

If he were to leave the castle without permission, rumors would likely spread.

He hadn’t fully been released from his punishment yet.

When he left the annex previously, no one had paid attention, so it passed without issue, but now the situation was different.

‘That’s why I need to entrust this to someone reliable.’

Leonhardt was the perfect person for the task. Nodding confidently, Leonhardt stepped out of the room.

Six hours passed.

Knock, knock.

When Kyle opened the door, Leonhardt handed him a pouch. It was a magic pouch with low-grade preservation magic.

“All the materials are inside here. But, may I ask what these are for?”

“I’m going to craft something. I found it in a book and got curious.”

It was a common enough excuse for a mage to experiment with a catalyst, so that explanation sufficed.

“I see. Understood.”

“Good. Make sure no one enters my room.”

After receiving his orders, the escort knight left.

Kyle then took out all the materials from the pouch.

Goblin’s eyeball, orc pancreas, gnoll molar, forest spider’s body fluid, troll blood, and various other monster by-products, as well as the ingredients to help create the solvent for mixing everything.

The preparations were perfect.

‘Let’s get started.’

Kyle knew exactly how to make it and what went into it, so the process wasn’t difficult at all.

Using a magical tool, he lit the fire.

Bubble, bubble.

As the water began to boil, he added the materials for the solvent, and the liquid began turning purple. It was a sticky, purple liquid.

After adding the monster by-products, Kyle infused his mana into the mixture.

‘The shape…’

Creating Artifacts required the maker’s magical power to be infused into the process. And just like casting magic, there were also benefits for users in the crafting process.

For instance, in the case of mages, if they moved their mana in a certain way within the given time, the efficacy of the crafted item would increase.

This was one of the game mechanics meant to make the somewhat tedious crafting process more engaging.

Naturally, Kyle knew the crafting methods for most items. His expertise came from years of gaming experience that had left him overqualified for these tasks.

‘For the Ogre Perfume, I just need to create a cross shape, combined with an X-like pattern.’

While the specific details were more complicated, Kyle remembered them well enough.

His mana flowed into the purple liquid, forming the required shape.

At that moment, the ingredients began to melt into the mixture, and the liquid turned pink.

Pink, huh.

Not exactly the color you’d expect for something like this—more like a love potion.

Kyle had seen it in the game before, but it was always an odd color. Stirring the liquid thoroughly, he poured it into a potion bottle.

[You have crafted a Magical Artifact.]

[Type: Consumable Potion]

[Efficient crafting method recognized.]

[Crafting method remembered.]

[Artifact being analyzed.]

[Name: ?? (Undecided/You may name it yourself.)]

[Effect: Can attract ogres within a 20km radius.]

‘Originally, it only attracted them within 10km, but now it’s doubled.’

It seemed that just like with magic, using player techniques during crafting could enhance the outcome.

Well, if it’s about double distance…

It would be quite helpful when I eventually create artifacts.

‘If I can cover about 20 km, I should at least catch one monster.’

Ideally, I’d want to encounter two at once, but even one would suffice. If I could secretly set up some ambushes while watching for the opportunity, I could inflict significant damage.

“Let’s call it… Ogre Perfume.”

As I settled on the name, a question mark appeared with the inscription.

[Ogre Perfume / Creator: Kyle Seltarion]

I couldn’t help but smile as I looked at the potion.

***

Friday morning.

After waking up, I picked up my magical pouch.

It was filled with groceries, daily necessities, magical tools, and more.

Once I strapped the bag filled with all sorts of items to my back, I stepped outside.

It seemed that Adolf had properly leveraged his influence, as I had received the marquis’s permission to join the subjugation army.

Outside the door stood two people.

One was my escort knight, and the other was Erciel, now my personal maid.

“Sir.”

“What is it?”

“Are you really okay going alone? At the very least, Erciel can…”

“I’ll be fine on my own. It’s more convenient that way.”

Since ogres were expected to appear in this subjugation, I had no intention of taking any attendants with me.

“…Please be careful.”

That kid.

He was more worried than I expected.

Why wouldn’t he be?

I wouldn’t move alone if I didn’t feel safe. My life would be in the best hands with that baron watching over me.

“I’m fine, so don’t worry. Just take good care of her.”

I pointed to Erciel, and he nodded.

“…Understood.”

Before I left, I had firmly instructed Leonhardt to prevent any potential mishaps.

Erciel.

While she had called upon the ancient spirit of light, Asiris, to aid her, it was crucial to nurture a connection with the spirit for her to harness its true power, so she was still not very strong yet.

The job of my escort knight was to protect her.

“Um, Sir. This…”

“Hmm?”

Erciel handed me a box wrapped in cloth.

It was square, so it seemed like a lunchbox.

And, sure enough…

She opened her mouth.

“It’s a lunchbox. I filled it with the food you like…”

“Thanks. I’ll enjoy it.”

“Yes. And you must return safely.”

“Sure.”

It had been a month since Kyle had entered my body.

Now, people were starting to worry about this rascal one by one.

‘Well, that’s not bad.’

After receiving the farewell from the two, I started moving toward the training ground.

The fifth training ground within the Seltarion estate.

There, a thousand soldiers were lined up, standing at attention, waiting.

It was for the subjugation army’s deployment ceremony.

To the casual observer, it looked like a well-disciplined, regular army. But those guys would turn into ruthless killers, unhesitatingly slaying even children the moment Adolf drew his sword. I was fortunate to be aware of that.

Adolf.

I wondered if it was because the subjugation army consisted of this villain’s direct subordinates, but he was the one standing on the podium as a representative.

Soon after, Baron Jerome and I also took to the podium.

Once the three of us had taken our places,

Adolf began to speak with great enthusiasm.

— “Today, we…”

To summarize,

He conveyed that with brave and excellent soldiers and commanders gathered, this subjugation would undoubtedly end successfully.

What was with this boring speech lasting fifteen minutes?

It seemed that once you stood on a podium, a flood of grandiloquence just poured out, no matter who you were.

— “All forces! March toward Trastan Forest!”

— “Waaah!”

Finally, Adolf’s opening remarks ended.

The morale of the thousand-strong subjugation army had been charged, and they began to move in earnest.

What should I use to get there?

I wouldn’t be walking like the soldiers.

As if noticing my concern, one of the stable hands brought over a horse.

Hiiing.

Wow.

A horse, huh.

I’ve never ridden one in this modern age; I wonder if I can do it?

Lucid dream…?

I caught a fleeting glimpse of this guy riding a horse from the memories I received.

Recalling that scene, I placed my foot on the saddle.

Is it just a matter of getting on?

I put all my strength into my legs and jumped onto its back in one go.

After firmly gripping the reins.

I tapped the horse’s hindquarters, and it started to walk slowly.

‘It works.’

Kyle.

Being of noble blood, it’s only natural that he must have learned to ride.

Was that memory still lingering in my body? It wasn’t hard to maintain my balance on the horse.

Where I was heading was right at the front line.

The location where Baron Jerome was leading the troops.

When I arrived there, the baron looked pleased.

— “You’ve come, young master. It’s been a while.”

Hooh.

Even though his favorability was at -40, he didn’t seem to hate me that much on the surface.

In fact, a smile similar to a grin was forming on his lips.

Did he receive some firm orders from Adolf?

Well.

Since the purpose of including me in the subjugation forces was to win me over, he probably wasn’t ordered to curse me out.

With his stylish mustache and hair swept to the side.

He even wore round glasses, suggesting he cared quite a bit about fashion.

“Yes. It’s nice to see you, Baron.”

— “This is your first time participating in the subjugation forces, right?”

“Yes, that’s correct.”

— “Since everyone else has gone through this at least once, you should be able to gain a lot from this experience too. While theory is important, there’s no more effective training than actual combat.”

“I’m looking forward to it too. If my magic can be of some help to the subjugation forces, I’d feel quite satisfied.”

— “Hahaha. I’ve heard your magical abilities are quite remarkable. This time, since it’s a small unit, we didn’t have a designated mage, so I can breathe a little easier. Anyway, follow me.”

Although our thoughts were 180 degrees apart, the atmosphere seemed very friendly on the surface.

Perhaps because of the sight of a thousand elite soldiers marching, the local residents were watching with bright eyes.

The subjugation forces.

Since this was an annual event in the Trastan Territory, it must be a familiar sight for the locals.

When a few knights waved, enthusiastic cheers followed.

— “This is quite a fertile territory. The faces of the local residents are full of smiles.”

“Yes. I think so too.”

— “That’s why it’s very important to clean up the forests in the south. Otherwise, those guys will come up here.”

I know, you idiot.

It’s not like you’re explaining something that even a fool could understand from a picture book.

Baron Jerome turned out to be a much talkative person than I expected.

As we moved toward our destination in the southern Trastan Forest.

He kept chatting away.

For someone with -40 favorability, he was showing quite an active behavior.

This could be interpreted as a strong loyalty to Adolf, I suppose?

Seeing him act like that toward someone he disliked speaks volumes.

As we traveled south, the scenery began to change gradually.

The fertile plains started to show signs of grasslands, soon revealing a densely wooded forest.

A habitat teeming with numerous monsters.

We had finally arrived here.

As expected, monsters began to appear one by one from the very entrance.

Kiiik?

Kieeek!

The goblins, who make up the majority of the forest’s inhabitants and are at the bottom of the food chain.

There were about a hundred of them.

They started approaching rapidly.

What the heck are they thinking, attacking a regular army of a thousand?

In Fantasy Defense, goblins are often portrayed as somewhat dumb, and it seems they’ve fully embraced that stereotype.

— “Prepare for battle!”

With the baron’s words.

Clang!

The knights drew their swords, and the archers began to draw their bows tightly.

‘Shall we get started slowly?’

This is my first actual combat.

Here, I was planning to utilize my magic in earnest.

I need to quickly raise my reputation.

Using a hybrid operation method.

If I use this, I can unleash the power of 1st circle magic in an instant, more potent than 2nd circle spells.

This should allow me to land an effective blow.

In my heart lies a single circle.

The mana that had been slumbering there began to spin rapidly, forming a shape.

Szzzz!

Lightning.

As the moment the magic activated.

A pure white lightning began to dance upon my right hand.
