Chapter 10
Days have passed since the large-scale flood of monsters.
During that time, nothing particular happened to me.
Even though I wanted to find a way to cross into North Korea, there didn’t seem to be a viable method. There had to be some sharp strategy to actually do anything.
As a result, all I’ve done for the past few days was part-time work. Hmm, it feels quite wholesome to be making a living like this.
While I was working part-time, Lee Su-hui suddenly ran up to me.
She struck a confident pose, placing her hands on her hips.
Her expression was incredibly bright, clearly indicating that she had something to brag about.
Well then, I should respond to her expectations. After all, I’m Baek Seung-hyun, the number one fan of Magical Girl Reina.
“Did something good happen? Your face is more radiant than usual!”
Normally, Su-hui would have told me not to say embarrassing things, but today she seemed to be in such a good mood that she slightly blushed before speaking.
“Well, I’ve met the requirements to apply for B-rank Magical Girl!”
At those words, I widened my eyes and stared at Reina. What? What did you say?
The ranking of magical girls becomes increasingly difficult to ascend as you go up. Until C-rank, you automatically advance as long as you meet the required amount of magical power, but from B-rank onward, you must also fulfill performance criteria to even be eligible to apply for the title of B-rank Magical Girl.
In the original story, Reina’s growth was exceptional, but even so, this felt like too much. It hadn’t been a month since I first met Reina.
I gaped in disbelief at the spirited girl and asked, “How did you do that?”
“Oh, during the last flood, I accidentally took down a few C-rank monsters. I was pretty lucky… but still, that’s what helped me meet the requirements!”
At those words, I couldn’t help but be flustered internally. If she had taken down multiple C-rank monsters by herself, then she would indeed meet the performance criteria. But how?
…Is this what being the protagonist is all about? I thought to myself as I opened my mouth.
“So, you’re going to apply to become a B-rank Magical Girl?”
“Yes, exactly!”
Once a magical girl meets the B-rank requirements, two paths open up: either to be content as a C-rank Magical Girl or to strive for something higher by applying to become a B-rank Magical Girl.
It seemed that Reina was inclined to apply for the B-rank Magical Girl position. After all, she’s the protagonist of “Matseu-An.”
“Then you’ll need a manager, right? What about that?”
“Ah, well…”
However, even though she met the requirements for B-rank, not just anyone can become one.
To be recognized as a B-rank Magical Girl, one must pass an ‘exam.’
The content of that exam involves accumulating achievements in the North Korean region.
According to the KMPA, they believe only magical girls who can gather achievements in the most dangerous areas should be recognized as B-rank, but… yeah, that’s nonsense. Most people know the real reason for the B-rank Magical Girl exam being held in North Korea.
It’s because a massive workforce of magical girls is needed to fend off monsters in that region.
Yet, with the dreams of magical girls aspiring to become B-rank held hostage, there’s no reason not to exploit them for cheap labor.
Moreover, the North Korean region lacks infrastructure, so magical girls will inevitably need management to assist them. Damn military PTSD… ahem, anyway.
What I was implying was exactly that. The hottest industry in South Korea right now is indeed magical girl management. After all, just the existence of Bing Seol Hwa had skyrocketed the stocks of the management company ‘Mirinae.’
If Reina were to settle for being a C-rank Magical Girl, it would be one thing, but since she’s aiming for B-rank, I couldn’t help but be curious about who Reina’s manager would be.
Ah, by the way, in the original story, she ended up signing a contract with a place called ‘PQ Management’ and went through a lot of suffering. It wasn’t a reliable company at all. I think it was also involved in illegal activities, and its reputation in this world didn’t seem very good either.
“I’m considering a place called PQ Management….”
Damn it.
“Forget it.”
“Pardon?”
As I looked at Lee Su-hui, who was staring at me with wide eyes, I spoke.
“That place has a bad reputation. There’s a high chance you won’t see good results if you sign a contract with them. I’m saying this as a fan, but don’t sign with them.”
Really, I mean it. If she sets her mind to it, she could sign with a big management company; why would she settle for something like that?
“But the big companies probably won’t pay much attention to me…”
“Well, that’s true. But a large corporation that’s somewhat careless is still generally better than a tiny company that’s putting in all its effort. It’s better to either join a large company or hire a personal manager who will take care of you specifically.”
Management for magical girls isn’t necessarily done by companies. Sometimes they sign contracts with people they have existing relationships with or those they can trust. Of course, most end up signing with professional management companies later on, but at least in North Korea, the story is different. Someone who knows you well might provide more attentive care than a large management firm.
“You might not even know how much time you’ll spend in North Korea, and if you sign with a strange company, you’ll regret it later.”
There’s a saying about North Korea: “The Graduate School of Magical Girls.”
As the saying goes, magical girls who head to North Korea for the B-rank magical girl exam don’t know how much time they’ll spend there.
The key issue of the exam is how many merits they can establish, but until they actually build those merits, they can’t predict whether it will take a few months or even years.
Still, many magical girls, unable to let go of their hopes of becoming B-rank, naturally lead to the term “graduate school.”
In such a situation, what if the manager they are closest to is a strange person? The stress would be unbearable. When I shared this kind of story, Su-hui’s expression darkened considerably.
“I-I didn’t know…”
“What are you going to do if the magical girl herself doesn’t know that?”
This isn’t good. She’s not some helpless child left out in the world; I need to make sure I say something to keep her safe. -Just then.
Suddenly, Lee Su-hui’s phone rang.
“Is that a call?”
“Oh, yes, it seems so. It feels like it’s been a while since I had one…”
After checking the call on her phone, Su-hui exclaimed, “Huh?”
“What’s wrong?”
“Uh… it says the monster has appeared right in front of us!”
What?
As I processed this information in my head, crash! The cafe’s glass windows shattered all at once.
“[Khaha! Come out, magical girls!]”
A giant turtle-shaped monster began wreaking havoc on the street. The broken cafe glass was likely a result of its rampage. Upon confirming the monster’s appearance, Su-hui turned to me and said,
“Run quickly. Transform!”
As I watched the back of the girl heading toward the monster, I felt a sense of déjà vu.
Because it was clear that the opponent was at least B-rank. -Yeah, it felt similar to when I had to send Reina to fight the werewolf monster.
The problem is… that monster was clearly stronger than the werewolf.
I was about to shift to “Black Knight” form in a deserted area, but I hesitated for a moment.
Is it okay to transform into the Black Knight now?
It hasn’t been long since the monster suppression operation began based on my obsession with Reina. But is it really fine for me to appear in front of her again now?
My head began to spin with thoughts.
And at that moment, the impact from the attack launched by the turtle monster hit me.
Oh no, I froze momentarily inside. Reina flew in front of me and blocked it.
“Ugh…!”
“Su-hui! Are you okay!?”
“I’m… fine, so… hurry and run… Ugh!”
Damn it, it looked like the damage was quite significant, as it seemed I couldn’t even fully defend against it with a barrier.
It might be quicker for me to transform into the Black Knight now rather than letting Reina, who’s in this state, take the brunt of it.
In that case, I can’t transform into the Black Knight now.
“Reina, can you run?”
“Wha? What do you mean… Ugh.”
It seemed running was difficult for her. I spoke while carrying Reina on my back.
“Let’s get out of here like this.”
“Huh?”
“I know a place where there are fewer people. Let’s run there and lure the monster away so that no one gets hurt.”
Fortunately, that turtle monster didn’t seem to be particularly fast for its size.
“This way!”
Before Reina could respond to my words, I said that and began to run while carrying her.
“Wha, huh?”
…Reina, who was on my back, still seemed to be trying to understand the situation.
