Chapter 13
“Wow.”
I let out such a sound without thinking.
We had arrived in the North Korean region for Reina’s B-rank magical girl exam. Honestly, I think I had underestimated this area a bit.
I mean, what I’m saying is that although the North Korean region itself is the frontline, I thought that, being classified as part of unified Korea, it would at least have some basic infrastructure.
But no.
There is absolutely nothing. There are no restaurants or places selling goods. Shouldn’t there at least be a store selling food ingredients or daily necessities? Seriously.
It seems like only electricity and radio waves are functional, but apart from that, it’s just a desolate wasteland.
I didn’t expect the scenery to be this extreme just because I crossed the Imjin River.
Su-hui looked at me with a dumbfounded expression and said, “Um… is this right…?”
“Well, considering that there’s a military facility nearby, it seems like it is,” I replied.
That’s right. The accommodation where the magical girls are gathered (I can’t even call it a village because it’s too shabby) is located near the military facility.
The reason is, of course, that dealing with monsters often involves the military.
In the South Korean region, magical girls typically hunt monsters that appear, but in the North Korean region, the situation is on a different level.
Magical girls use aerial maneuvering for reconnaissance, and the military uses its firepower for bombardment. If that’s not enough, the magical girls engage in close combat themselves.
In other words, the whole manual is on a different dimension. While fighting monsters in the South is closer to counter-terrorism, in the North, it’s real war.
I spoke up while washing my face.
“First… let’s unpack at the accommodation, and then we’ll head to the military facility. That’s how we officially become affiliated with the North Korean region’s magical girls.”
Once we move to the North Korean region, our affiliation changes as well.
Most magical girls are affiliated with a specific region. Like Bing Seol Hwa from Seoul or A-rank magical girl Cheong-ha from Busan. However, being affiliated with the North Korean region is special. It means being associated not with the KMPA but with the North Korean stationed army.
So, Su-hui and I headed to the assigned accommodation. Surprisingly, the accommodation itself looked ordinary. It resembled a spacious family house, and I felt like I wouldn’t have to worry about the water or electricity being cut off like I did in the North Korea of my previous world.
From now on, this place is what I have to manage. I have officially become Su-hui’s manager, which means I need to keep everything in top condition so she can relax comfortably whenever she returns from dealing with monsters.
However, to be honest, I wasn’t particularly satisfied with the state of the accommodation. While it was clean, it was only because it was completely empty. If you looked closely, you could see dust accumulating in various places.
…But, well, there’s nothing I can do about it right now. Su-hui needs to go to the military facility to register her transfer.
Hmm, military PTSD… no, let’s not think about that.
(NOTE: South Korea has a mandatory military service system for male citizens between the ages of 18 and 28.)
“Shall we start moving then?” I suggested.
“Yes… Um, the furniture is supposed to arrive tomorrow…”
“Let me know if you get cold. Even though it’s summer, you never know.”
With that, we headed to the military base to complete the transfer registration. This also meant that I was nominally part of the military. Magical girls and their managers are classified as a two-person military unit.
Re-enlisting made me flinch and tremble at the memories of my military days, but I tried to ignore it.
Surrounded by numerous soldiers, we went through all sorts of paperwork and signed documents before finally being released after completing our transfer registration.
“Ugh… we haven’t even encountered a monster yet, and I’m already exhausted…”
I massaged Su-hui’s shoulder and said, “Well, that’s just how it is. The military is like that. Especially on the frontline.”
What, here at the front lines, it’s truly a fight where people die and kill.
Su-hui and I chatted like that as we slipped out of the military base. And at that moment, we spotted a few people.
About half of them looked like magical girls, and there were familiar faces among them. No, to be precise, it was a face I couldn’t possibly not recognize.
The main characters from the original work were there.
“Hmm, another newbie? This time, I hope you can last until you get a B-rank without giving up in the middle,” said a girl with brown bobbed hair and a military-style tone. She was A-rank magical girl Atillery, unmatched in artillery magic.
However, the person next to her was more important to me.
A girl with red-dyed hair, styled in a cumbersome way, was glaring at the two of us.
“What’s this? A guy as a manager? Seems like you’re here to mess around, huh?” she snapped.
The prickly girl was A-rank magical girl Hong-ryeon, an expert in fire magic and, excluding Bing Seol Hwa, undeniably the strongest magical girl in South Korea.
She was throwing sharp words at us.
Su-hui, perhaps overwhelmed by Hong-ryeon’s fierce aura, hid behind me. Seemingly displeased by that, Hong-ryeon spoke again.
“Wow, you don’t look like you can last a few days at the front. You’re just going to run back saying you want to be a C-rank, aren’t you?”
“Tsk, the newbie seems to have a weak spirit,” Atillery chimed in. “Can’t say you’ll get better by rolling around. Too many give up before they get their heads straight and run back to the rear.”
With the burden of being under the gaze of two A-rank magical girls, Su-hui was left speechless. I clicked my tongue and spoke up.
“Let’s keep it civil.”
At that, Hong-ryeon glared at me, looking offended.
“And you are…?”
“I’m Reina’s manager.”
“Just a manager, telling me what to do? What are you, an entertainment company?”
“I’m independently affiliated. Your words are a bit harsh for someone you just met.”
Hong-ryeon looked at me as if incredulous, then laughed before glaring at me in annoyance.
“Is this for real…?”
Just then, a siren began to blare.
“What’s this about?”
I frowned. Atillery let out a small laugh and said, “It means the monsters have broken through. That newbie over there, follow me. I know it’s chaotic, but there’s nothing we can do about it. And as for your manager, well, you can stay in the lodging area. You’ll be safe there due to the barrier.”
“Just wait, you.”
Hong-ryeon gritted her teeth, transformed, and soared into the sky, while Atillery chuckled and patted my back.
“Sorry for the rude words earlier. You’re right; I shouldn’t say such things since I’m not even a senior. Now then, newbie, let’s go. By the way, what’s your name?”
“Oh, it’s Su, Su-hui.”
“No, I mean your magical girl name.”
Su-hui’s face flushed, and she bowed her head before answering, “Re, Reina.”
“Reina, huh… Good. Then Reina newbie? Let’s go.”
In an instant, the remaining magical girls flew up into the sky simultaneously.
Seeing that, I began to run toward a field where no one’s eyes could reach.
I didn’t come to the North Korean region just because of my role as Su-hui’s manager.
It was obvious that the New Humanity Association had some schemes going on in North Korea, so I had to investigate that as well.
However, there wasn’t much time for such investigations. I was Su-hui’s manager and had to stick with her.
In other words, the only time I had the freedom to act was during moments like now when magical girl Reina was battling monsters.
It was tiring for the mind to have incidents happening right after arriving in North Korea, but that was just a mental strain. My body felt no fatigue from the monsters at all.
And I had no intention of wasting this time. I had to find out what the New Humanity Association was up to as soon as possible.
Coincidentally, a vast number of monsters were rushing in. If I kept my magic hidden within my body, I wouldn’t be detected.
I checked to make sure there was nothing around and then spoke.
“Transformation.”
My magic was unleashed. The essence that had been confined within my human shell awoke.
The magic took shape as armor, and soon, my body merged with an invincible strength, incomparable to any steel.
[Shall I go?]
Having transformed into the Black Knight, I leaped straight into the depths of North Korea.
