Chapter 6 – Treasure Arrives in the Trash Storage

#1

The annex, often referred to as the trash storage.
The carriage carrying Nikolai and Lawrence arrived there.
They attracted a lot of attention on the way.
Everyone in the surrounding area probably knew who was inside the carriage.

Worried, Nikolai asked Lawrence as he stepped out of the carriage.
This place was dangerous if one wasn’t careful.

“Young master, why didn’t you enter the main house? This place could be dangerous.”

“There’s no difference between there and here. In fact, I find this place more comfortable.”

“Hmm… if you say so…”

Lawrence smiled faintly.
Nikolai couldn’t help but feel that smile was deeply melancholic.

“If you’re worried, come have coffee with me. Anytime.”

“I’ll do that.”

“Well then…”

Without looking back, Lawrence entered the annex.
Watching his retreating figure, Nikolai felt a complex mix of emotions.
How much must the young master have suffered to appear so composed?
That’s probably why he had become so mature.

‘I hope only good things come your way.’

After giving a respectful bow, Nikolai climbed back into the carriage.
The madness displayed during the magic evaluation.
No, perhaps it was more like malice.
That sight still flickered in his mind.

“Let’s go.”

“Yes, sir.”

Now that Lawrence had shown his abilities, he would have to face all kinds of pressures.
Nikolai couldn’t even imagine how difficult that process would be.

Rachel, who had heard the sound of the carriage’s arrival, came running out, panting.
She teared up when she saw Lawrence return unharmed.

“Young master, are you hurt anywhere?”

“I won.”

“R-Really!? How… how did you…?”

Rachel’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Lawrence playfully clenched his small fist, showing it to her.
Even though it was so small, it must have hurt his peers a lot.
At the very least, Arthur Goldvain and the children from the branch families would fear this fist.

“I beat them with this.”

“What…?”

“Why, don’t you believe me?”

“N-No, I believe you, of course. Are you hungry? Let’s go inside. I’ll cook you something delicious.”

Believe me? Yeah, right.
Lawrence smirked as he headed inside.
Rachel fussed over him, checking every inch, and somehow managed to cook a dish to Lawrence’s liking with the few ingredients available.

After mentioning that he’d be in the storage, which had now become his workshop, Lawrence thought,

‘That woman will make her move soon.’

He had to be prepared.

Medeia’s favourite methods came to mind.
This was where the advantage of regression truly shined.
He had accumulated a wealth of information about people over time.

“Poison. I’ll need to prepare for poison and curses.”

That was precisely why he had left one slot open.
He hadn’t yet found any mediums or extracts related to poison.

“Maybe I should visit the Market.”

Medeia wasn’t the type to send someone directly.
She preferred not to finish things in one blow but to inflict long-lasting pain.

A body that wouldn’t grow, no matter the effort.
Mana that wouldn’t accumulate, no matter how much was trained.
A way to waste time as it slipped away—those were Medeia’s specialties.

‘Was that how Mother died as well? I’m almost certain, but there’s no hard evidence.’

Just thinking about it made his blood boil.
He had been powerless back then, unable to investigate, filled with nothing but resentment.

That’s why he was now determined to quickly create an artifact for this purpose.

Once he had power, he would investigate everything.

The next day.

“Damn it, I can’t find anything.”

Lawrence had thoroughly searched the entire house.
But there was nothing satisfactory to be found.

None of the materials related to poison were in this place.
Just as he was considering heading to the market to check item by item, Rachel’s voice rang out.
At the same moment, the usually quiet house was filled with commotion.

“Young master! A carriage from the main house has arrived!”

“What’s with the carriage?”
“Looks like it’s filled with food supplies.”
“Oh… really?”

They would claim it was sent by the family head, wouldn’t they?
And it’s bound to be full of poison and curses, right?
Lawrence’s mind naturally painted the situation.

‘Hmm, what should I do about this?’
For now, since the supplies had arrived, he should receive them.

He moved himself to open the annex door.

“The family head has sent various daily necessities and food supplies as a reward.”

“Rachel, show them where to put everything.”

“Understood. This way…”

Without any issue, the workers smoothly unloaded the goods and quietly left.

He thought they might pull some trick, but they behaved more quietly than expected.

After confirming the carriage had left, Lawrence began inspecting the supplies with Rachel.

The food was magically preserved, including meats, vegetables, various fruits, and spices, all treated to prevent spoilage.

Even without an artifact, the magic applied would keep the food fresh for a few months.

The boxes were filled to the brim, enough to last them both for several months.

Each time Rachel opened a box, she let out an exclamation of wonder.

“Young master! I’ll make something really delicious for lunch today!”

“Hold on a minute.”

“Huh?”

Rachel froze, her hands reaching for the meat.

This naive maid had no idea how dangerous this world could be, yet she was ready to touch everything so eagerly.

“Don’t you know that you can get in trouble if you accept things from strangers without caution?”

“Huh? But it’s from the family head…”

“Never mind. Don’t touch anything until I give you permission, Understood?”

“Ummm, okay. I trust you, young master!”

Although her face was filled with curiosity, Rachel obediently nodded.
The young master said not to touch anything, so she couldn’t argue.

‘Or… maybe there’s some hidden meaning behind his words?’

She pondered for a moment, hand on her chin, but couldn’t come up with anything.

Lawrence glanced at the supplies and let out a faint laugh.

Medeia Montemer.

He knew her power was formidable, but he hadn’t realized she was this efficient.

“She really is the family matron, after all.”

But what could she do? I possess eyes that can see through everything.
Lawrence gazed at the remnants of mana hovering above the meat.

Mana, tainted with ominous hues, wrapped around the food.
This meant the food was poisoned.

The Dragon’s Eye.
The Guardian’s eyes had the miraculous ability to see through all things.

And one more thing.

Something was happening that Medeia, with all her malice, couldn’t have imagined.

[Poison-Infused Meat – Engraved: Negative Energy]

‘Who would’ve thought that I could extract it from a piece of meat.’

A sinister grin spread across Lawrence’s face.

[Negative Energy]

A magic that converts negative mana, such as poison and curses, into one’s own power.

This was a unique mana cultivation method of the Venoman Family, a powerful assassin family.

By transforming negative energy into mana or physical strength, they were able to return it to their enemies in the form of devastating curses and poison.

This was the source of power that elevated the Venoman family to a prestigious standing in the world of assassins.

Even in a world where artifact technology had been lost, the Venoman family was one of the few who could replicate something similar.
Though the method would eventually fade over time, it would be wise to use it to its fullest potential while it was still useful.

The younger the person, the more effective the Negative Energy would be, and it was typically discarded once the body had fully matured.
Thus, for Lawrence, this was the perfect time.

‘Could it be that this meat was acquired from there? Either way, this is a jackpot.’

Perhaps.

Regardless, this was an extraordinary opportunity.

Negative energy was a deadly force for mages, knights, and ordinary people alike.

But being able to convert it into positive energy meant that Lawrence wouldn’t need to worry about poison or curses ever again.

Having obtained such a valuable extract, all he needed now was a suitable medium.

And luckily, there were more supplies right here, weren’t there?

“I should look for a suitable medium among the daily necessities.”

Lawrence chuckled quietly.

“You probably think you’ve just thrown away garbage into the trash storage.”

“But little do you know, the things you discarded as trash have become priceless treasures for me.”

“You better be prepared.”

They probably hoped he’d grow weak.

On the contrary, Medeia’s children, his siblings, were likely expected to grow strong.

But what a pity.

They had just handed him an elixir.

Lawrence’s steps became lighter.

Meanwhile, Rachel’s gaze was still fixated on the piles of food supplies.

“I really want to cook something delicious…”

Her disappointed voice lingered in the annex.

In the meantime, Lawrence opened one of the boxes of daily necessities.

“Found it.”

It didn’t take long to find the medium.

Medeia’s tricks had, once again, worked to his advantage.

As expected, nothing deviated from his predictions.

The mana that blackened everything covered the daily necessities.

Where could this curse have come from?

[Medium: Cursed Plate]
[Effects related to poison and curses increase by 20%.]
[This medium is suitable for engraving.]

“Quite the curse-laden object you’ve prepared here. Did you make this in advance?”

How could she manage to curse so many daily items in less than a day?
Medeia’s connections were beyond imagination, so maybe it wasn’t entirely impossible.

Crackle—

As Lawrence grabbed the plate, the black mana seeped into his body.
Immediately, a message appeared before his eyes, clearly reflecting his condition.

[Dangerous mana detected.]
[You are beginning to be cursed.]
[Curse: Weakness]
[Your overall physical growth will be suppressed.]

What could be more deadly to a growing child than a curse like this?

But it didn’t matter.

All the curses and poisons would now turn into nourishment.

He headed straight for the workshop.

“Rachel! Don’t touch any of the food or daily supplies! Got it?”

“Eek! Yes, yes!”

He made sure to warn Rachel sternly.

Even though he had the power of Negative Energy, he couldn’t be too careful.

Better safe than sorry.

“Alright, then… let’s get started.”

[Extracting Magic Circle.]
[Engraving: Negative Energy.]
[Engraving Level: 2nd Circle.]
[This is a degraded version. While it won’t show its full power, it will function similarly.]

‘Still, this is more than enough. I’ll make a better one once I’ve grown.’

A magic circle emerged.

Lawrence confidently picked up his pen and began drawing the circle on the plate.

Scratch, scratch—

The magic circle slowly began to take form on the cursed plate.

“Ah, this is fun.”

After all, he was someone who was born to love creating things.

[Artifact: Negative Energy]
[Engraving Level: 2nd Circle]
[Implantation Status: Possible]

Lawrence gazed at the completed artifact, now in the form of a plate.
It may have looked like a simple, plain plate, but its value was something anyone would covet.

Without hesitation, Lawrence implanted the artifact into his body.

Crackle—!

As the artifact merged with his body, it granted him a new power.

A flood of knowledge about how to use Negative Energy began pouring into his mind.

[Knowledge transfer complete.]
[You can now use Negative Energy.]
[Stored Energy: 0]
[Converted Mana: 0]
[Converted Physical Ability: 0]

Since he didn’t have mana, he’d have to invest everything into enhancing his physical abilities.

Lawrence observed the cursed energy flowing into his body and activated the artifact.

[Negative Energy]
[Stored Energy: 100]

The mana was drawn toward one spot—his heart.

The very center of the Mana Core, where a circle should have been.

There, a small cluster of mana had formed.

“Invest it all into physical abilities.”

Having mana was useless, since he lacked a Mana Core and couldn’t use it anyway.

Was he hoping to become a martial artist or a new type of mage?

Unfortunately, that wasn’t an option.

[Growth is accelerating.]
[Dragon Body is growing.]
[Hatchling Stage: 6.5%]

“Heh, heh, heh…”

Lawrence chuckled as his shoulders trembled with excitement.
The time for rapid growth had finally arrived.

He kicked open the door to the workshop and shouted,

“Rachel! We’re having steak for dinner tonight!”

“Really!?”

Rachel’s delighted scream echoed through the annex.
