Chapter 1

[Demon]

It is a higher-dimensional intellectual being with incomprehensible power.

Demonic Summoner.

They are those who pay some price to demons in exchange for borrowing fragments of that power.

Today, I Summoned a demon.

I am about to become a Demonic summoner.

***

Three years.

That is the time that has passed since I fell into this unfamiliar world.

I vividly experienced the words of the brilliant human intellect, the great Einstein-sensei: “All time is Relative.” Just as he said, these nearly three years felt longer than my entire life until now.

At first, it was good.

I was just an ignorant high school student, filled with dreams and hope, recalling the otherworldly novels and fantasies I had read before.

It took only a week for that delusional dream to shatter.

It was a bubble-like dream.

In a world where neither my language nor my writing was understood, and I had no guardian to rely on. From the moment I arrogantly assumed I was something special, my fate was sealed.

Thus, I fell to the rank of a slave.

Still, perhaps I had some shred of luck.

The same harsh reality that pushed me into the abyss also opened a path for me.

Though I became a slave only a week after I started trying to survive in this world, even among the slaves, I was a fairly high-class one.

No matter how different the world was, mathematical proofs transcended dimensions and remained a universal truth. In a world as primitive as this, my knowledge of middle school mathematics was useful to some extent.

My buyer was the head of a merchant guild, and I became a calculation slave for the guild. After working for more than two years, I eventually bought myself back. I became a Freed Slave.

It was thanks to the very conscientious master I met, and for the first time since coming to this world, I thought I was lucky.

But that was merely the beginning.

Status, appearance, money, power…

I had none of these things and was still at the very bottom of society.

If I had stayed with the merchant guild, maybe things would have been different. But after shedding the status of a slave and stepping into the world, my future was bleak.

My appearance and skin colour were signs to them that I was an outsider.

The label of being a slave followed me even after becoming a freed slave.

I tried to learn magic, my only hope, but that too was in vain.

Some said I had no talent.

Others clicked their tongues, saying I was too old to start learning now.

Three years might only be a little over 10% of my life.

But these recent three years changed me more intensely than any period in my life.

And I realized.

My life has reached a point where it can’t possibly go any lower.

“I have no choice….”

I can do anything to change this wretched life.

No, I must do anything.

It took a long time to reach that determination.

I stared at the drawing on the ground with trembling eyes.

The circular boundary, the geometric patterns, and the letters inscribed inside.

It was a Demon Summoning Circle.

A contract with a Demon—something even those who’ve hit rock bottom hesitate to make.

But it was the path I chose.

“I Summon Thee.”

As I let a drop of blood fall from my already wounded fingertip, I began.

Even though I had no trace of magical power, the spell’s strength in my voice resonated with the summoning circle, creating a sound as unpleasant as nails on a chalkboard.

The summoning circle I drew was one that calls a demon at random.

It’s a common circle that’s easy to find.

If I’m lucky, a powerful and friendly demon will appear.

If I’m unlucky, a weak or violent one will come forth.

Or perhaps the circle could be faulty, and I might get devoured by the demon without protection.

“Then that’s it for my life, I suppose.”

There’s nowhere lower to fall.
There’s no hope left to hold onto.

This is the end.
The dead-end of my life.

I can either break through it or stop, blocked in my tracks.
There’s only one of the two paths.

Squinting at the light emanating from the summoning circle, I chanted the final incantation.

And then, immediately after—

Cold sweat trickled down my spine.

‘I… I think I just…’

…used Korean instead of the language of this world?

“I need to cancel…!”

The light of the summoning circle went out.

And from the fading glimmer, that being appeared.

With an aura so mysterious.

Through the gaps of the dimming light above, I saw the face of the Demon.

It was beautiful.
Even more so than its voice, no—far more beautiful than any voice could ever be.

Its radiant golden hair shimmered with a brilliance that melted even pure gold, and its features formed a flawless harmony, indescribable by my limited vocabulary, so perfect that no sculptor in the world could replicate it.

Unconsciously, I gaped and stared blankly at that face.
The Demon’s eyelids slowly lifted.

As if guided by something, I locked eyes with the Demon and…

I froze on the spot.

Those icy blue eyes, so different from the warm golden hair—

It was such a cold gaze that merely staring at it made me realize the pitiful state of my own being. It was a gaze so devoid of life that it made me feel as insignificant as a pebble.

The spell of enchantment from its beauty shattered as if a bucket of ice-cold water had been poured over my head.

Yes.

The being before me is a Demon.

A Higher-Dimensional creature that defies human comprehension.

A being that can crush a human’s life on a mere whim, just like a person squashing an ant out of boredom.

She smiled.
Her delicate lips curved into a captivating arc, and it was utterly enchanting.

The smiling Demon parted her blood-red lips and sang in a voice as cold and beautiful as snowflakes.

“I have a question.”

An emotionless tone devoid of highs and lows.

Her voice reaffirmed the fact that she was a Demon, proclaiming that a boy had met a girl.

“Are you, my summoner?”

A smile and a voice as unchanged as the first encounter.
And eyes devoid of life, as if she didn’t see me as the same living being.

But that doesn’t matter.

I didn’t summon a Demon to make friends.

I responded to the Demon’s question politely.

“Yes, I am the one who summoned you.”

“Good. But you’d better be more careful next time.”

Clearly, something was wrong.

“I should’ve used the language of this world for the spell….”

“Such an old offering….”

An instant of silence.

“Offering?”

“…?”

Was the problem not the language but the offering?

An offering? Why?

The goat head I placed on the makeshift wooden altar—

It’s said to be the Demon’s favourite offering, isn’t it?

“I paid quite a lot for that….”

“What do you mean ‘the language of this world’?”

I had a strong feeling that our conversation was veering off course.

It seemed she felt the same.

“Uh, excuse me… Is this place not Earth?”

For the first time, a trace of emotion appeared on the previously calm and composed face of the summoned Demon.

It was a look of utter confusion, as if something had gone terribly wrong.

***

The confusion only lasted a moment.

Before long, the Demon regained her composure, and we were able to have a serious conversation.

Pretending I hadn’t seen her moment of bewilderment—maybe that’s a skill I picked up after learning to navigate through society while rolling in the dirt all this time?

In any case, I shared my past, and the Demon listened to my long story with great patience.

Then, she delivered a revelation that left me stunned.

“You were Summoned from Earth?”

It was hard to believe.

But if it’s a Demon, then it might be possible.

My thoughts eventually reached the conclusion that it might just be feasible.

After all, as someone who has already experienced a transition to another world, I can’t deny the possibility.

Furthermore, it was undeniable that Demons are higher-dimensional beings that surpass humans.

One only needs to look at her transcendent appearance to realize that fact.

What’s more, it seemed like returning to Earth was not entirely out of her reach.

Maybe they perceive even other worlds, ones we can’t even comprehend, as merely distant spaces.

I shuddered at the endless power of the Demon.

Hope was right in front of me.

But as I expressed my desire to find a way back to Earth, which brought our conversation to a close—

The Demon dismissed my wish with a single statement.

“It’s impossible.”

“Why…?”

“The summoner isn’t prepared yet.”

What did she mean?

I’m ready to offer everything I have.

Even if it means pledging my soul and falling into the Demon’s hands after death, right now, I would seriously consider it and eventually nod in agreement.

A Demon Summoner typically offers three main things in exchange for using the Demon’s power.

The ‘Worship’ the summoner offers to the Demon.

The ‘Offering’ prepared to summon the Demon.

And the ‘Price’ incurred by borrowing the Demon’s power.

I’m prepared to pay any of them.

Worship, Offering, Price—it doesn’t matter.

But the Demon shook her head.

“The power of a Demon is far too vast for an ordinary human to contain. Grow stronger, become more powerful. Expand your vessel and elevate your rank. That’s why you’ve come this far, isn’t it?”

At that moment—

The lifeless gaze in her eyes, which seemed like gemstones devoid of any vitality, shifted for the first time. It was as if a glimmer of life passed through them.

It was a gaze that dispelled any doubts I had about whether she was truly a Demon.

The Demon extended her hand.

She offered a lifeline of salvation.

“There’s no need to be disappointed. I will give you the power you need to move forward.”

As if enchanted, I grasped her hand.

“…The Contract.”

At my words, the Demon smiled.

Then, she gently raised her hand, and a red droplet of blood formed at her fingertip.

“Those who hear my true name shall become my contractors.”

With her words, the droplet of blood fell from her fingertip.

Onto the Summoning Circle I had drawn.

The blood mingled with mine, which was already spilled within the circular boundary.

“My name is Saire. I am the one who fulfils wishes.”

The Demon accepted my wish, received my Offering, and did not demand any Price from me.

***

It felt like a dream.

A moment that felt like a midsummer night’s dream.

To be ensnared by a Demon—is this what it means?

“You said you’d keep watching over me.”

If I ever wish to summon her again, all I need to do is recall her True Name.

Standing in the empty room where Saire had vanished, I reflected on her parting words.

And then, it suddenly hit me that I had changed since before.

“So… this is what Magic Power feels like.”

A strange sensation radiated from my back—a feeling I could barely describe.

The Demon Contract symbolized by the Contract Mark and the Magic Power of Saire transmitted through it.

I sharpened my focus and carefully, calmly, moved the Magic Power.

The viscous, tar-like black Magic Power responded to my will and began to gather and churn.

It was within my grasp.

The Magic Power I had longed for so much.

Though, for now, it wasn’t much.

The Magic Power transmitted through the Contract Mark amounted to only a single cup when compared to Saire’s vast power that stretched out like an endless ocean beyond the Contract Mark.

Perhaps, when Saire mentioned “Rank,” she was referring to a level where I could draw up that entire sea of power in one go.

That level was still a distant goal.

But—

“Finally.”

I stood at the starting line.

It was a lifeline I had grasped miraculously from the edge of a cliff.

From now on, what I must do is learn to control this power and elevate my rank.

And I know how to do that.

Just as Saire mentioned, I came here to pursue that answer.

The source of all mysteries.

Wealth, honour, the unknown—all the answers are found in this place.

The Abyss.

I’ve reached the starting line, gained the strength to run, and can see my destination.

Now it’s time to run.
