Chapter 31
The first piece was Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 16, with its refreshing melody.
The clear and transparent melody flowing from the fingertips marked the start of the recital.
Soon after.
Debussy’s Clair de Lune played, soothing the emotions of the pleasantly intoxicated audience.
The soft tone spread gently like the serene scenery of a night reflected on a calm lake.
As the delicate notes unfolded like a painting, at that moment.
Chopin’s Heroic Polonaise and Rossini’s William Tell Overture followed.
The intense touch and dynamic movements.
The dramatically escalating techniques offered a stark contrast to the previous two pieces.
The whirlwind rhythm reached an awe-inspiring level.
A majestic recreation of a heroic epic.
“This is unbelievable…”
“Wow…”
The cadets couldn’t help but gasp.
They felt a shiver run down their spines.
But it wasn’t over.
Pachelbel’s Canon.
The familiar yet serene harmony.
The simple yet beautiful melody that calmed the heart enveloped the recital hall.
Victor Kosolin, who had quietly taken a seat among the audience, leaned forward.
“Anton Tilburg performing Canon himself…”
It was clearly different from when he had simply reproduced it by reading the sheet music.
He couldn’t miss a single moment.
His ears perked up.
The deep, lingering resonance.
As he leaned into the soft and warm peace flowing from the keys, it felt as if time had stopped.
“I can’t believe it.”
He glanced sideways.
His assistant, Mattael, was there.
She seemed completely absorbed in Anton Tilburg’s performance.
He turned his gaze back to the stage.
A different piece was now being played.
A lyrical and romantic melody.
After the exciting introduction, the emotions surged, leading to an expressive climax.
Liszt’s Liebesträume.
And finally.
Passionate rhythm and lively melody burst forth.
It felt like a cool summer breeze on a beach.
It was as if one could hear the cheerful laughter of merchants from somewhere.
“That was Anton Tilburg.”
By the time he came to his senses, the recital had ended.
A crisp beginning, a colourful and rich highlight.
And a calm conclusion.
A perfect narrative arc.
Victor quickly stood up and gave a standing ovation.
There was no other way to release the excitement surging within him.
Following his lead, one by one, the cadets in the auditorium rose from their seats.
“Wooooah!”
The world of music that Anton Tilburg had presented.
They were briefly stunned by the shock of it all.
But soon, the auditorium was filled with all kinds of cheers.
It all happened within a matter of seconds.
“Anton! Anton!”
“Wooooah!”
And then.
Somewhere in the midst of the wave of the audience.
A girl had collapsed to the floor, her face buried between her knees.
Selena Winter.
‘Sobs! It’s too beautiful!’
Tears streamed down her cheeks!
For her, today’s stage wasn’t just a recital.
It was like a dream.
A moment she would never forget.
A perfect impression engraved deep in her heart!
‘I, too, someday… want to create such beautiful music…’
Amid the whirlwind of emotions, a small smile appeared on Selena’s face.
She wasn’t the only one.
Here and there, similar scenes could be observed.
Several audience members, like Selena, began to lower their heads and sob.
Perhaps today’s recital had ignited a fire in their hearts.
Not long after, the Academy conducted its own survey on the career aspirations of the cadets post-graduation.
An unprecedented situation occurred, with more than 70% of them writing “musician” as their desired profession.
“A musician… what a splendid word, isn’t it, Professor?”
“Hey! You’ve already submitted your application for the Knight Order! Why are you suddenly making a fuss about becoming a musician?”
The headmaster and professors had to spend several days racking their brains to calm the situation.
It was a scene that was almost comical.
***
“Good job.”
Erdi said.
As soon as the recital ended, I returned to my room with him.
Of course, Edward and Oscar were there as well.
“Aren’t you planning to stay a bit longer?”
Oscar asked.
My answer was firm.
No.
I want to return home as soon as possible.
Of course, before that, I’d stop by the Magic Laboratory to meet the professor there, but it wouldn’t take long.
“Dinner will be ready soon. Shall I bring the food to your room?”
“No, I’ll go to the dining hall.”
At that moment, I had no idea.
That I had made a fatal mistake.
“Wooooah!”
“He’s here!”
Damn it.
Should I go back inside?
A huge crowd had gathered at the door.
All of them were cadets.
“What an incredibly moving performance!”
“I’ll definitely visit the theatre after I graduate! Please remember my face!”
“Kyaaah! Sir Anton!”
One after another, people started shouting and asking for handshakes.
Among them were a few who had subtly looked down on me during that first day in the dining hall.
Fine.
A true superstar drives both fans and haters crazy.
‘Is that right?’
Anyway.
Only after greeting each one of them was I able to head to the dining hall.
I had a simple meal.
Although I’ve been eating it for several days now, the food here is quite good.
Thanks to that, I had a pleasant dinner.
After returning the dishes, I made my way to the Magic Laboratory.
“You’ve come! I’ve been waiting for you!”
Once again, the woman with short hair greeted me.
“By the way, I really enjoyed your recital! I was a bit late, so I only got to hear the last two pieces.”
“Haha, that’s fine.”
Once her research succeeds, missing a performance won’t even matter.
‘Recording technology.’
I was eager to hear the results.
“Have you heard of short-term memory imprinting magic?”
“No, I haven’t.”
She began explaining.
To put it simply, it’s a type of imprinting magic that allows you to perfectly remember something you absolutely cannot forget.
Apparently, it’s usually used for important lectures or speeches.
It certainly seemed appropriate for the Academy.
“We tweaked that magical circuit a bit, implemented it into an artifact, and made it respond to sound…”
Honestly, most of what she said was hard to understand.
I don’t have enough magical knowledge to fully grasp the principles an expert explains.
But soon.
“All we need to do is add a button to the implemented artifact, and it’s done!”
She handed me a small, rectangular-shaped magical tool.
Well.
I don’t know how it works, but as long as it functions properly, that’s all that matters.
This was the best option for me.
She pressed the button.
Then the last piece I had performed at the recital, Albéniz’s Cádiz, began to play.
The sound quality was quite good.
It captured both the rich bass and the clear treble perfectly.
This was truly an amazing item.
“I recorded it as a test! How is it?”
“…Honestly, I’m shocked. I can’t believe you’ve invented such an incredible device. You’re a genius, Professor.”
“Haha! Thank you!”
And it can be mass-produced.
Of course, we’d have to pay a reasonable sponsorship fee, but that wouldn’t be a problem.
“By the way, what are you going to name it?”
“Pardon?”
“You’ve created an artifact, so you should give it a name!”
That was something I needed to think about.
A name, huh.
“What’s your name, Professor?”
“Me? I’m Jubel Brosia.”
Alright.
“Let’s call it Jubel. Since you made it, Professor, it should bear your name.”
I’ve seen that scientists tend to do that.
“Well! If that’s alright with you, I’m happy with it!”
I gave her the address of my estate in the capital.
Now that we were partners, it was necessary to stay in regular contact.
“Please take care of me!”
“Of course!”
I left the Magic Laboratory and headed straight for Edward.
***
“Something that can store sound, that’s certainly impressive.”
“We’ll try selling it to theatregoers as a test, and if the response is good, we’ll increase production.”
“Understood.”
The rest would be thoroughly reviewed once we returned to the capital.
Now that everything was done, I was getting ready to leave when suddenly.
“By the way, young master.”
Edward called out to me.
“About the piano.”
“Ah, right. How is it now?”
“I tried my best, but it seems impossible.”
“…That’s troublesome.”
Even though we plan to commercialize Jubel, we can’t close down the theatre entirely.
There will still be high demand for opportunities to see live performances.
However.
That’s only possible with a proper piano.
“It’s better to just get a new one.”
Edward agreed with my opinion.
We decided to split the cost of the new piano between the two of us.
‘Still, it’s a bit sad.’
I feel a bit sentimental about parting with the piano that’s been with us throughout our entire journey.
I should take one last look.
It was loaded on a cart by the Academy’s back gate.
“You’ve worked hard.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be able to hear me, but I sincerely expressed my gratitude.
“What do you plan to do with it?”
“Well. If it were in better condition, I would have donated it to somewhere in need, but it’s in no shape to be played anymore…”
Disassembling it and disposing of it seemed like the best option.
“Wait a minute.”
A place in need?
There’s one place that comes to mind.
A place where even a broken piano would be welcomed with applause.
***
“Just look at this glorious figure…!”
“His soul is in every single key!”
Edward and I watched from afar as the cadets made a fuss.
As expected, this was their reaction.
“At least we could preserve it in some way.”
Indeed.
We decided to donate the broken piano to the Academy.
When I told the headmaster, he was thrilled.
The piano was soon displayed in the central hallway on the first floor of the cadet dormitory building.
“Woooah…”
“What’s with the slightly crooked pedal?”
“…It’s probably just broken.”
Seeing how much they liked it made me feel content.
I’m already looking forward to coming back to the Academy in the future.
“What are you doing? Get away from it! This is a sacred gift from the god of music! You can’t just stare at it however you like!”
Maybe I shouldn’t enroll.
That’s something to think about.
