Chapter 4: Would You Be Sad If I Died?
“Xixi, thank you. I didn’t expect you to be so brave.”
Bai Yuan came up to me with a fake smile, holding my hands, but her eyes were full of threats.
I shook off her hand and, feeling famished, left the Fu family.
Honestly, I should have given up then.
At the hospital.
“You’re pregnant, two months along. Didn’t you notice? We’ll observe it for a while.”
I sat in the chair, shocked, staring at the test results, my whole body trembling.
Pregnant.
Of all times, I got pregnant now.
Fu Mingyu doesn’t love me, so he would never accept the child in my womb.
Even if I’m pregnant, it won’t change his attitude towards me. He’ll just think I’m playing tricks to force him into marriage.
Five days before the accident.
I gathered the courage to tell Fu Mingyu that I was pregnant.
If he didn’t want the child, I’d get an abortion and leave.
I’d never cling to him again.
The phone kept ringing, but he didn’t pick up.
When he finally answered, it was Bai Yuan who spoke.
“Xixi, are you looking for Mingyu? He’s tired and needs rest.”
“Why are you saying so much? Just tell her not to bother me.” Fu Mingyu’s impatient voice echoed in the background, followed by Bai Yuan’s laughter. “Mingyu, don’t mess around, I’m on my period today, so no touching.”
I sat stiffly on the sofa, numb, clutching my phone.
That night, Fu Mingyu came home, but with Bai Yuan by his side.
“Why did you bring her here?” Aunt Fu frowned, clearly displeased.
“Mom, I’m here to tell you that I’m getting engaged to Yuan Yuan.” Fu Mingyu’s voice left no room for argument.
Aunt Fu was shocked and instinctively looked at me.
My eyes reddened, but I said nothing.
“I don’t agree. You and Xixi are already engaged…” Aunt Fu began.
“Mingyu, don’t say that. Xixi has been through a lot.” Aunt Fu tried to object further.
“Mingyu, you can’t do this to her.”
“Mingyu, don’t be rash.” Aunt Fu still wanted to argue.
“Yuan Yuan’s been targeted by that serial killer. He only preys on single, unmarried women. I’ll make our engagement public.”
Fu Mingyu’s favoritism towards Bai Yuan had reached blatant extremes.
My stomach churned, and I rushed to the bathroom to vomit violently.
What did he take me for?
I still remember when I was eighteen. My parents had a car accident, and I was trapped in the wreckage. The car was on fire, ready to explode at any moment.
Fu Mingyu had come running, smashing the window, cutting the seatbelt, pulling me out despite his hands being covered in blood. He carried me to safety.
Then he went back to save my parents.
“Mingyu… it’s too dangerous…” I weakly called out, watching from a distance as he risked his life to save us.
The car exploded just as my parents were pulled out.
The flames and shockwaves made my heart tremble.
Even though my parents didn’t survive, the way Fu Mingyu risked his life to save us was burned into my heart.
He’s a good person. He always has been, just not to me.
After throwing up until there was nothing left, I collapsed to the floor, my vision darkening.
He’s going to marry Bai Yuan.
And I’ve always been a joke.
“Xixi, don’t be afraid. You’ll be okay, Xixi…”
“Xixi…”
I still remember at the car crash site, he kept calling my name, telling me to hold on, that the ambulance was almost there.
Back then, I thought he liked me too.
One misunderstanding lasted so many years.
“Cheng Xi, stop pretending to be dead!”
The bathroom door was kicked open, and Fu Mingyu looked at me with displeasure. “Tomorrow night, go to Hongtong Alley. Everything is arranged. Stop playing these tricks.”
“Fu Mingyu… Aren’t you afraid I might die?” I asked hoarsely.
“Cheng Xi, you’re tough. You’re perfect for this. You and that killer make a great pair! Use the energy you’ve spent pestering me on the killer. Maybe you’ll be doing society a favor!”
“If I died… would you be sad?” I asked, my voice cracking.
Fu Mingyu frowned. “Would you actually dare to die? I’ll answer that question once you’re dead.”
