Chapter 13
Watching my brother cry in front of the doctor, I felt a lump in my throat.
Could there ever be anyone else who cares about me this much?
“Brother… don’t cry…”
In the end, tears flowed from my own eyes as I clung to my sobbing brother, startling the doctor.
Thanks to the doctor’s comforting words, both my brother and I were able to calm down.
“Ahem, are you feeling better now?”
“Y-yes, I’m sorry! My childish brother…!”
“You were crying too!”
As I bickered with my brother, the doctor cleared his throat again, prompting us to apologize once more. We then listened as he explained the rehabilitation schedule.
“If you begin rehabilitation treatment as an inpatient starting today, it will take roughly six months. It will undoubtedly be a challenging time, but there’s one thing I can promise you: in six months, you’ll be able to walk out of here on your own two feet.”
“Wait… I have to be admitted?”
“Of course. Were you planning on receiving outpatient treatment?”
The doctor gave me a look that said, “That’s simply not an option,” while my brother, seemingly reading my thoughts about how much the hospital fees would cost for six months, immediately responded that I’d be admitted.
“B-brother?!”
“Don’t worry.”
As if he understood all my concerns, he smiled and promised me pork cutlets if I endured the next six months.
That’s your favorite food… not mine…
“I’ll come early tomorrow morning.”
“Bring melon-flavored ice cream.”
Leaving my ever-consistent sister behind, it took me a long time to finally leave the hospital on my own.
Dragging my reluctant feet, I made my way home.
After returning the rental car on the way, I arrived home and collapsed onto the sofa. Since when did the house feel this spacious?
Not that it matters. It’s still just an old villa with two small rooms, thanks to a kind landlord.
Sitting on the sofa in a daze, I revised my plans for the future.
My sister’s urgent rehabilitation treatment had started, and my debts were fully repaid.
So, what do I need to do next?
Scanning the house, I came to a decision.
I’ll move.
To an apartment with hot water in the winter.
Preferably one with a good view, too.
To make that happen, I need to earn a lot of money.
“Nika, shall we head out?”
【Yes!】
“Enter!”
【Entering the tower.】
Arriving at the massive tower entrance, I opened the door and stepped inside, triggering a message.
【Would you like to enter the 8th floor?】
Accept / Decline
“Accept!”
【Entering the 8th floor.】
───────────────
【8th Floor Mission: Hunt 50 Giant Rabbits!】
【Time Limit: Within 12 hours.】
【Restrictions: Passive swordsmanship skills are disabled.】
【Restricted Equipment: Longsword.】
───────────────
Are swordsmen just supposed to die?
Thankfully, I’m a summoner, so it doesn’t affect me, but the difficulty keeps ramping up.
…Am I really a summoner? I use summoned creatures, so I guess I am?
But this is such a terrible draw. Why do I have to hunt 50 of them?
Are the monsters weak?
No, that can’t be right. Look at the sheer size of them.
Is that thing a siege weapon or a rabbit?
A gigantic rabbit passed by, big enough to topple a fortress wall with a single punch. It was taller than the trees and visible at a glance.
At least finding them won’t be a hassle.
“Nika.”
【Leave it to me!】
One turned into two.
Two turned into four.
Four turned into eight.
Wait, wait, wait—what’s going on here?!
Eight Nikas spread out in all directions, hunting the Giant Rabbits. The scene resembled alien creatures on a hunt. Was I imagining it?
Even a single one of those rabbits is terrifying, but with multiple of them appearing, it’s downright horrifying.
【Aha-ha! Die!!】
【Aha-ha! Die!!】
Look at her laughing while hunting. It’s terrifying.
───────────────
【4 monsters eliminated.】
───────────────
───────────────
【8 monsters eliminated.】
───────────────
───────────────
【12 monsters eliminated.】
───────────────
The kill log kept climbing as Nika’s hunting speed reached unbelievable levels.
It felt even faster than before. Just how far can Nika’s abilities go? It’s starting to scare me.
At one point, as I looked at the Giant Rabbits fleeing in terror from Nika, I felt pity for them.
One of them locked eyes with me and suddenly charged?!
At the same time, the ground beneath me trembled, and something emerged—a giant tentacle…?
In an instant, the tentacle grabbed the Giant Rabbit and turned it into pulp.
【Die, die, die, die!】
The tentacles erupting from the ground—multiple ones, not just one—rampaged in all directions, grabbing the fleeing Giant Rabbits and turning them into pulp.
───────────────
【32 monsters eliminated.】
───────────────
───────────────
【36 monsters eliminated.】
───────────────
───────────────
【40 monsters eliminated.】
───────────────
This scene reminds me of an alien invasion movie I once watched.
To summarize in one sentence: this is absolutely terrifying.
───────────────
【50 monsters eliminated.】
───────────────
【Mission Clear!】
Rewards will now be distributed.
【New record on the 8th floor!】
Registered in the Hall of Fame.
As I trembled uncontrollably, Nika returned to me.
There was blood smeared around her mouth—had she eaten the rabbits?
【Master!】
Is it just my imagination, or does it sound like she’s saying, “Praise me now, or you’re next”?
“G-good job, Nika.”
With a pop! sound, Nika reverted to her adorable form, and I hugged her tightly.
【Would you like to proceed to the next floor?】
Accept / Decline
“Decline.”
【Exiting the tower.】
In an instant, I was transported out of the tower and back home, but the grotesque scenes I’d witnessed earlier wouldn’t leave my mind.
I thought about spending time with my sister, but… oh, she’s in the hospital.
【Cooldown has refreshed.】
Oh, perfect timing. Is there anything good I can use now?
“Random Summon.”
【Congratulations! You have obtained a Cursed Doll.】
“You son of a…”
The next morning, I arrived at the hospital early to bring some clothes for my sister, only to find her bed piled with snacks.
“Oppa, say hello! This is the boss lady!”
“Oh ho ho, your little sister sure has a way with words! By the way, who’s this? Your boyfriend?”
“N-no, that’s not it! He’s my real brother! My actual brother!”
“But you don’t look alike at all.”
As my sister showed signs of discomfort, the boss lady laughed heartily, brushing it off by saying siblings don’t always resemble each other. She then excused herself, leaving the two of us alone in the four-person room.
“I brought everything you said you needed.”
“Ice cream…”
“Oh, right. I’ll get that in a bit.”
“······.”
Her expression clearly said, “If you don’t bring me ice cream right now, you’re no longer my brother.”
How do I know? Anyone would understand just by looking at that face.
“…Wait here. I’ll go get it.”
“Okay!”
As she cheerfully responded, I reached out to pat her head but stopped midway. She tilted her head quizzically—does she really not know?
“You didn’t wash your hair, did you?”
“Ugh, just go get it already!”
“Ah, this brat and her temper.”
Leaving the hospital room, I headed toward the convenience store in the west wing basement. To get there, I needed to take the elevator and navigate through the complex hospital layout.
Somehow, I ended up on the roof instead of the basement. How did this even happen?
In all my life, no one has ever called me directionally challenged, but maybe I actually am?
Since I was already here, I decided to get some fresh air and approached the railing. There, I noticed someone had arrived before me.
It was a beautiful woman with silver hair flowing gracefully in the breeze.
“Hello.”
“Oh, hello.”
When she noticed me, she smiled brightly and greeted me. Her eyes were strikingly unique.
Was she wearing colored contacts? Her eyes were crimson.
“What brings you here?”
“Oh, my sister’s been admitted. I was trying to find the store but ended up here by mistake.”
I replied with an awkward smile, and she approached me, offering to guide me to the store.
Is this… could it be a green light? I wouldn’t mind having a daughter who looks like her, but a son wouldn’t be bad either.
“Shall we go?”
“Y-yes!”
Following her lead, I reached the store in no time. Was it really this close?
“Thank you. You’ve saved me.”
“You’re welcome. I’ll be off now.”
She waved brightly and left, and I returned to my sister’s room with a bag containing ice cream. Her expression immediately turned suspicious.
“W-what? What’s with that look?”
“Brother, be honest. Something happened on your way back, didn’t it?”
“Me? N-nothing happened!”
