Surviving as the Hidden Mastermind in an Academy Story Chapter 48

Chapter 48

‘What is with this guy?’

Amilion was seriously pondering.

Whooosh—

“Is it like this?”

“…Yes.”

As a professor with 10 years of experience, Amilion had thought she’d encountered everything possible at the Academy.

That was until Ryu Yeong enrolled.

Since Ryu Yeong’s admission, Amilion had experienced events in a short period that rivaled her previous decade of teaching.

Starting with a commoner achieving top entrance exam scores, there was also an external interference in the Crescent Empire Academy’s internal events—a shocking development in itself.

Then came the appearance of the Undead, which threw the Academy’s faculty into complete disarray.

What was even more astonishing than the Undead’s appearance was the fact that Ryu Yeong single-handedly handled an Undead that had given third-year students significant trouble.

On top of that, he set a record that had never been achieved in the Academy’s history: a first-year student taking first place.

And now, Ryu Yeong was once again surprising her.

Before the Academic Year Battle, Ryu Yeong could barely manage basic protective magic.

Yet, within just a few days, he had transformed completely.

Amilion didn’t know how, but Ryu Yeong was now freely controlling magic.

And not just any magic—it was wind magic.

Unlike mainstream magic such as fire or ice, wind magic was a non-mainstream branch, meaning there were few people who could even teach it.

Yet, Ryu Yeong controlled the wind as if he had been trained by an expert.

‘Does this even make sense?’

As a magician herself, Amilion found it hard to believe Ryu Yeong’s progress.

She had been impressed when Kane Hover showed notable improvement recently, but Ryu Yeong’s case was incomparable.

If Kane had advanced from basic arithmetic to equations, Ryu Yeong had jumped from counting numbers straight to equations—or perhaps even beyond.

‘No, he might have surpassed equations entirely…’

Amilion watched as Ryu Yeong controlled the wind across multiple areas simultaneously.

Even witnessing it in real-time, it was hard to believe.

He couldn’t even handle simple calculations before, and now he was managing such complex, simultaneous control.

‘Was it all an act?’

“Hehehe.”

But no, his previous struggles with calculations seemed far too genuine for that.

Amilion shifted her gaze from Ryu Yeong, who was grinning for no apparent reason, to the other students.

While most were engrossed in practicing magic in their own ways, Kane Hover stood out.

Sitting with a rigid expression, he wasn’t even trying to gather mana.

Just days ago, he had been brimming with confidence, but now something seemed off.

Kane wasn’t the only one struggling to focus on class.

Cynthia Surplus, who had been strangely distant since the Academic Year Battle, was similarly distracted.

Initially, Cynthia appeared attentive, but now she sat quietly, deep in thought.

‘Hmm.’

Teenagers were notoriously unpredictable, but this was extreme.

Amilion thought it might be time to refresh the atmosphere in the class.

***

The saying “time heals all wounds” proved to be true once again.

The awkwardness between Cynthia and the group after the Academic Year Battle gradually faded with time.

One day, Cynthia, who had been perpetually downcast and silent, suddenly perked up and finally initiated a conversation with me, Elaine, and Emily.

What she said wasn’t anything groundbreaking.

She simply admitted she felt upset about not fulfilling her role during the battle and apologized for it.

She promised that next time, in a similar situation, she would step up and take the lead.

Her expression radiated confidence as she spoke.

For me, Elaine, and Emily, who hadn’t cared about it in the first place, Cynthia’s apology was easily and warmly accepted.

Cynthia became even more energetic and confident than before.

At first, I had worried she might be mentally fragile, but it turned out she just needed time to bounce back.

As Cynthia regained her energy, the four of us naturally started sticking together again.

With Cynthia back in the mix, our conversations became livelier, and the group’s atmosphere improved significantly.

It was a positive change in every way.

“Since Cynthia missed it last time, why don’t we visit my house again…”

“Ahh, no thanks. I’ve had enough of the Sinclair family for now.”

“My father also mentioned he’d like to see you again, Ryu. He said he’d teach you a lesson next time…”

“…Hmm? Teach me a lesson?”

“Yes. So, he asked that you visit again.”

“…I’ll think about it. I’ll visit someday.”

Hearing Elaine’s words, it was obvious what Royce’s intentions were, but I didn’t have the time right now.

Lately, I had been busy.

First, I had to train in magic.

I never thought the words “magic training” would come out of my mouth, but here I was.

After completing the Academic Year Battle quest, I had finally unlocked “Wind” magic.

Not only was it convenient to use magic with just a “click,” but the visible progress in my abilities made it even better.

I recently realized that skills functioned as a kind of leveling system.

I had always found it odd that the Status Window didn’t have a basic level system, but it turned out to apply here.

The more I used magic, the more my proficiency increased, and once it reached a certain level, I could learn new magic—essentially new skills.

Because of this, I often stayed behind at the Academy after classes to train in magic on my own.

Even the simple wind magic I had learned was proving incredibly useful, so the idea of mastering new spells made my heart race.

The reason I chose to stay at the Academy and practice magic instead of returning to the Black Shadow Corps was simple:

I was an “Academy Novice Mage.”

The title granted me a 30% faster growth rate. I had to take advantage of that.

I sacrificed the romance of going back to my base for practicality—this much was worth it.

“Are you busy again today?”

“Are you training? Want to do it together?”

“Ah, no. I have other things to take care of today.”

Unfortunately, today wasn’t just a day for training magic.

If it were, I’d have joined Cynthia or Elaine, but today I had personal matters to handle.

The second reason I was busy was that I still had work to do as the Leader of the Black Shadow Corps, not just as an Academy student.

This involved investigating suspicious individuals within the Academy, a task Yuria had entrusted to me.

Two days ago, Yuria provided me with intel, saying she had identified three suspects.

The people Yuria pointed out weren’t just random nobodies.

I had assumed that if someone had infiltrated the Academy, it would be a student like me or perhaps one of the numerous staff members.

But Yuria’s suspects were all individuals of high standing, above the level of ordinary professors.

The first suspect was unexpected: Cassis Sinclair, the homeroom professor for the third-year S class.

According to Yuria, Cassis had suspiciously transitioned straight from the battlefield to an Academy professorship.

Although the Sinclair Family, as one of the Six Great Houses, carried some credibility, Yuria believed an investigation was still necessary.

The second was Lockert Erpen, a professor for the second-year A class, whom I didn’t know well.

Yuria claimed he was highly likely to be accepting bribes from the underworld.

The final suspect was Randgar Bayel, the Vice Principal of Crescent Academy.

As the Vice Principal, Randgar wielded considerable power and connections with the government, meaning he could do anything if he set his mind to it.

I asked Yuria several times if she was certain—after all, could the Vice Principal really be orchestrating something sinister at the Academy?

But Yuria was resolute.

In fact, she argued that if the Vice Principal were involved, the events that had unfolded so far would make a lot more sense.

Given how formidable the individuals under investigation were, I had to approach this task seriously.

“How about tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow?”

“Yes. Professor Amilion mentioned that there’s an S class event tomorrow, so classes might end early.”

“Oh, right. Class ends early, but I’d rather not meet with that guy.”

“Well, if not my house, maybe we can all just go somewhere together…”

Now that I thought about it, tomorrow was indeed a day when classes would end early.

Professor Amilion had recently said that everyone seemed worn out and decided to hold an event to let us relax.

It was supposed to be a time for S class members to strengthen bonds outside the usual academic setting.

‘Honestly, if Kane wasn’t in our class, I think everyone would get along just fine.’

The biggest problem in S class was still Kane Hover.

After his confident challenge against me, which ended in his clean defeat, I thought he’d try again soon.

Surprisingly, Kane had been quiet since then.

I almost thought he’d come to his senses, but the hostile glare he gave me every time he saw me suggested otherwise.

Spending time bonding with someone like him felt like a waste of time.

“Tomorrow… Let’s see how it goes.”

“Sounds good!”

“Well, then, if it’s okay, tomorrow…”

“Hm?”

Emily, who had been quietly listening to our conversation, adjusted her glasses and spoke up.

She had come a long way—no longer flustered by everyone’s attention, she confidently continued.

“Would you help me test something? There’s something I’ve always wanted to try, but I couldn’t because I’m not good with wind magic.”

“Ah.”

It was a very Emily-like request.

When I nodded at her cautious question, a wide smile spread across her face.

“See you all tomorrow?”

“Yep, see you tomorrow!”

“Take care!”

After saying goodbye to everyone, I hurried back to the dorms.

If I wanted to spend tomorrow with peace of mind, I had to finish everything today.

‘I’ll wrap it all up at once.’

The individuals I had to investigate weren’t easy targets, but I didn’t plan on dragging this out.

The sooner I uncovered the mastermind, the better.

Whoooom—

After ensuring no one was around, I teleported straight to my office.

First, I needed to grab some proper clothes.
