Chapter 52
“What the…”
Fwoosh—
I didn’t even have time to finish my sentence before a sudden blaze came flying toward me.
When Kane Hover, engulfed in flames, threw a punch, fire erupted.
It wasn’t a refined technique, just crude but powerful flames.
Boom—
The fire missed me and hit the ground, where it exploded upon impact.
This wasn’t normal fire.
The flames Kane Hover emitted had explosive power.
If it touched anything, it would instantly explode.
“Hey!!”
Until a moment ago, Kane Hover had at least been yelling.
But now, completely engulfed in flames, he didn’t make a sound.
When I shouted, Kane Hover turned his attention toward me and unleashed fire again.
Boom— Boom—
Explosions erupted around me, and heat engulfed me from all sides.
‘There’s no way this is a skill.’
No matter how I looked at it, Kane Hover’s current state didn’t seem like he was using a hidden ultimate magic to defeat me.
It was far too excessive for that.
His appearance wasn’t that of someone using magic deliberately—it was someone who had lost control, recklessly burning through mana in a rampage.
As the head of the Black Shadow Corps, I had seen countless spells in my time, but I had never witnessed a mage’s very being transform to this extent.
“Hey, what the hell is that?!”
Fwoosh—
Instead of answering, Kane Hover sent another blast of flames my way.
Anyone could see he was out of his mind.
At this point, I could feel how serious the situation was.
I thought it was just another rage-fueled attack, like the one from a few days ago.
Boom— Boom—
But Kane Hover, engulfed in flames, was becoming increasingly aggressive.
At first, he had thrown his fire directly at me with precision.
Now, he was haphazardly spewing flames in every direction.
The heat and fire spread with each explosion.
The worst part was that we were in a forest, so the damage was even greater.
The fire Kane Hover emitted had already set the surrounding grass and trees ablaze.
‘How am I supposed to deal with this…’
My face twisted in frustration.
If this had been a monster, I would have cut it down without hesitation.
But seeing Kane Hover being consumed by flames in real time made me hesitate to swing my sword.
“Damn it.”
Even as I hesitated, the fire continued to spread relentlessly.
No matter how I thought about it, the only option that came to mind was to cut him down.
The most straightforward solution was to extinguish the flames consuming Kane Hover.
It seemed like he had entered a state of mana overload—if I could remove the rampaging mana, he might return to normal.
But with the magic I had at my disposal, extinguishing those flames seemed impossible.
That left the sword as my only option, which meant I had to strike him down.
Boom—
Even now, Kane Hover was spewing flames in all directions.
To prevent the fire from spreading further, I swung my sword midair to slash at the flames as they flew outward.
Before I realized it, the Black Shadow Blade, with its gleaming dark blade, was in my hand.
‘Even if I slash it, it explodes.’
I had assumed the fire would disperse into the air when cut, but I was wrong.
Even when slashed midair, the fire exploded on the spot.
I could feel the remnants of the flames brushing against my clothing.
‘Should I just end it?’
I seriously debated it.
Sooner or later, Professor Amilion and the other students would arrive.
It would be great if Professor Amilion could resolve the situation without any harm, but that was just wishful thinking.
The students wouldn’t be able to handle the flames Kane Hover was spewing.
Even if they managed to block it, the explosion would cause injuries regardless.
To prevent such a disaster, the best option was to cut down the source.
“I’m sorry, but…”
Resolving myself, I aimed my sword at Kane Hover.
I didn’t know why he had transformed like this, but there was no other way.
I had no choice but to cut him down.

“Quickly, get out of the forest!”
“P-Professor!”
‘Damn it, what the hell is going on here?’
Amilion, sensing something ominous, rushed toward the source of the massive mana fluctuations.
Deep within the Training Forest.
The mana was far too immense and violent to belong to a student.
Amilion didn’t even need to rely on the mana fluctuations to know something was wrong.
Thick gray smoke was rising continuously from deeper within the forest.
“What is this…”
“Professor! I’ll lead the way!”
“What are you…! That’s dangerous!”
“Just hurry!”
“Cynthia!!”
‘Ha, seriously.’
Amilion called out to Cynthia Surplus, who ignored her warnings and ran ahead.
But Cynthia showed no signs of stopping.
Her speed was remarkable—she was already far ahead.
Amilion couldn’t understand how things had escalated to this point.
After the inter-academy competition, the atmosphere among the students hadn’t been great.
Planning a small event to lift their spirits had seemed like a good idea at the time.
Based on her years of teaching experience, Amilion knew that activities like this often had surprisingly positive effects on students.
At first, they would groan and complain, but once the activity started, they would inevitably become engrossed.
You never know what kind of interactions might occur among students at their peak age.
That’s why I had high expectations for this event as well.
“Cynthia! Damn it, how is she so fast?”
Even as a professor, Amilion, who didn’t prioritize physical training as a mage, couldn’t keep up with Cynthia Surplus’s speed.
On top of that, Cynthia seemed to be running even faster than usual.
Busy trying to keep up with Cynthia, who was far ahead, Amilion had no time to pay attention to the other students.
Meanwhile, the mana fluctuations felt in the distance grew increasingly violent.
‘I hope no students are caught in this.’
Deep within the Training Forest, the growing waves of mana.
Cynthia Surplus charging ahead, ignoring Amilion’s words.
No sign of the other students.
Thud—
In a split second, Amilion’s thoughts raced, and she determined this was an emergency.
Professors at Crescent Academy had the authority to use their full abilities in emergencies, even within the academy grounds.
Amilion forcefully pushed off the ground, her body lifting into the air.
Mana enveloped her as she flew upward.
It was the Fly spell, requiring precise control.
“Cynthia!!”
“Pro… Professor?”
“Turn back now!! It’s dangerous!!”
“But…! I can help you!”
Normally, Cynthia was one of the most obedient students, so Amilion couldn’t understand why she was acting this way today.
Abandoning further attempts to stop her, Amilion flew higher.
Whatever was happening, Cynthia was safe for now. The priority was to assess the state of the other students.
Whoosh—
Mana waves spread outward from Amilion as she floated in the air.
Soon after, she sensed the presence of the other students nearby.
Elaine Sinclair and Agnes Kessler, slowly walking toward the source of the flames.
Emily Franz and Marie Scylla, motionless about a kilometer away.
And, at the center of the mana disturbance, Ryu Yeong and Kane Hover.
‘Kane Hover…?’
As “The All-Seeing,” Amilion knew immediately.
The mana currently rampaging belonged to Kane Hover.
“What on earth…”
It didn’t take long for Amilion to see what was happening.
Breaking through the smoky, scorched air, the scene became clear.
The forest was ablaze, and at its center stood two figures.
Or rather, could you even call them two figures?
‘Fire?’
Ryu Yeong stood there, holding a sword.
His expression serious, he gripped the blade tightly, his guard never lowering.
At the end of Ryu’s blade stood not a person, but a flame.
A massive, humanoid blaze.
Looking at the immense fire, Amilion felt an overwhelming sense of dread.
The faint mana emanating from the giant blaze was unmistakable—it was Kane Hover’s mana.
“Ryu!”
Amilion called out to Ryu with a desperate voice.
Thankfully, Ryu looked up as her voice reached him.
In the brief moment Ryu’s gaze shifted away from the fire, the massive blaze erupted, sending flames flying in all directions as if it had been waiting for this opportunity.
“…Watch out!”
Boom— Boom—
Before Amilion could even finish her warning, Ryu was already moving.
Without hesitation, Ryu leapt toward the flames bursting in all directions, cutting through them midair.
Every single one of them.
As Amilion watched Ryu’s movements, she immediately understood.
The reason the flames hadn’t spread further was that Ryu had been doing everything he could to contain them.
Whoosh—
Amilion flew as quickly as possible toward Ryu.
“What about the others?”
“…I didn’t have the capacity to think about them. What is that?”
“You already know, don’t you?”
“No way.”
Landing swiftly beside Ryu, Amilion felt her vague suspicion turn into undeniable reality.
The giant blaze before them was indeed Kane Hover.
“How did this happen?”
“It seems his mana went into overload. I don’t know the exact cause.”
“That’s ridiculous.”
“This isn’t the time to argue whether it makes sense or not. You came at the right time. I was just about to end it.”
Amilion clung to a sliver of hope as she observed the blaze more closely.
However, the more she looked, the clearer it became.
The mana unmistakably belonged to Kane Hover.
“Is there no way to save him?”
“To suppress a mana overload…”
As Amilion calmly thought of ways to deal with an overload, something happened.
“Professor!”
“Huh?”
“What the…”
Fwoosh—
At the sound of the voice, Ryu and Amilion both turned their gazes behind them.
Almost simultaneously, flames burst forth from Kane Hover, heading straight toward Cynthia Surplus.
