Chapter 37
I prefer the word “fate” over the word “ill-fate.”
And now, Min Su-han, who locked eyes with me.
He is someone who cannot quite be called an ill-fate but falls short of being considered fate.
As soon as he recognizes me, he approaches with an evil grin.
“Who do we have here? Isn’t it our D-rank? Don’t tell me an Awakener actually evacuated to a shelter?”
“Haha, it’s been a while.”
Even though we only know each other’s names, he acts as if we’ve been close for years.
“You know, I’ve been scouted by the Awakener Association recently….”
Like someone who belittles others to elevate himself.
As he chatters away beside me, I awkwardly smile and play along. That’s when Nika, peeking her head out of my embrace, exudes an unsettling aura.
【Should I get rid of him?】
I hastily push Nika back into my arms. When Min Su-han asks what’s wrong, I make up an excuse, saying it’s nothing.
At that moment, the ground begins to shake.
“Ahhhhh!”
As civilians start panicking, the Awakeners from the Association work to calm them down.
“Everyone, please do not worry! Awakeners from the Association and nearby guilds are currently responding to the situation!”
They tried to instill hope, but the atmosphere quickly shifted to despair.
When one side of the shelter’s wall collapsed, a massive monster emerged.
The hunters inside the shelter charged at the monster but were the first to flee.
Most of the hunters guarding the shelter were C-rank. Even if they had combat abilities, they couldn’t fend off the monsters spilling out from such a large-scale Gate Outburst.
Still, it’s unbelievable for Awakeners from the Association to abandon citizens and flee.
As chaos erupted with fleeing civilians and charging monsters, I knew this was my chance.
“Nika.”
Nika slipped out from my arms and, with one swing of her massive claws, defeated the monster in one blow.
The people fleeing stopped in their tracks upon hearing the monster’s shriek and turned around.
【Did you see that?】
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!”
“Run awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!”
“Moooommmmmmmmyyyyyyyyyyyyy!”
Their screams grew even louder than when they first saw the monster.
…This is a disaster.
_
Having left the shelter, I looked toward the direction of the Gate.
Numerous hunters were engaged in a fierce battle with the monsters.
But the hunters were slowly being pushed back.
It seemed reinforcements were necessary.
Checking the internet, I found out it wasn’t just happening in Seoul. This was occurring nationwide… no, globally.
“What on earth is happening?”
I couldn’t just stand by and watch the hunters struggle.
I was about to ask Nika for help when a familiar voice called out.
“There you are.”
“I’m glad you’re safe.”
Turning toward the voice, I saw Lillian and the Heavenly Demon arriving.
Their timing couldn’t have been better.
If Nika stepped in, she might be attacked by the hunters out of fear, creating even more problems.
“You came at the perfect time. Can you take care of the monsters?”
“Of course.”
“Leave it to us.”
They disappeared simultaneously and began hunting monsters one by one.
From afar, I watched them in awe, as did the hunters nearby.
Who wouldn’t be captivated by two beautiful women annihilating monsters?
And not just any hunters—they displayed power surpassing S-rank.
【I want to hunt too.】
“Hmm, how about next time, Nika?”
【Alright.】
***
Despite the efforts of numerous hunters risking their lives to stop the monsters emerging from the Gate, there were limits.
Fortunately, it was an A-rank upper-tier Gate, not an S-rank.
If it were an S-rank Gate, only S-rank hunters like Cha Mi-rin or Cha Yuri would have been able to stand their ground.
Thanks to them, the situation was somewhat under control, but the difficulty was still absurd.
“T-Team Leader! Isn’t this basically S-rank?!”
“I don’t know! Just kill one more monster!”
“Y-Yes, ma’am!”
Even though it was labeled an A-rank upper-tier Gate, having two S-rank hunters barely manage to hold their ground… this was unbelievable.
When the sense of everything I knew shattered, a monster had approached me unnoticed, and in that dangerous moment, something flew in and sliced the monster in half.
As I stood there dumbfounded, looking around, I heard the sound of footsteps approaching.
When I turned to look, I saw two stunningly beautiful women.
“Step aside.”
The woman with black hair flowing gracefully, wielding a massive sword, spoke as she drew her blade.
With a single swing, the monsters around her shattered into pieces.
“Leave some for me.”
The other woman, with striking red hair and exotic features, pulled out a staff from thin air and waved it.
The sky began to darken, and something started to fall.
“What… what is that…?”
Countless objects fell from the sky, each one precisely targeting a monster and killing it in one strike.
Not just me, but all the other Awakeners stared at them in awe.
The association director and Team Leader Cha Yuri, regaining their composure, approached the two women and seemed to say something, though I couldn’t hear it.
Is this also some kind of magic? It’s such a short distance, yet I can’t hear them.
Not long after, the conversation seemed to end, and the two women walked past us into the Gate.
“T-Team Leader!”
“Shh, stay quiet.”
Instead of stopping them, I called out to the team leader, but she merely signaled for me to remain silent and didn’t stop them from entering the Gate.
Who on earth are these women?
Then, I felt a sharp slap on my back from the team leader.
“Get your head straight and go assist another area.”
“Yes, ma’am!”
***
“So, this is the inside of the Gate.”
“I’ve been inside with Master before, but this environment is different.”
A beautiful view of a blue sky and ocean stretched before us.
But even that was a trap.
The sea was made of acid, and staring at the sky induced hallucinations.
“Everything here is false.”
“Indeed.”
Had it realized its illusions were uncovered?
The sea began to ripple, and a massive monster emerged.
Should I call it an octopus or a squid?
It looked like a mixture of both.
“I’ll handle this.”
“Oh my, wouldn’t it be better if I took the lead here?”
“I need to regain my strength as soon as possible, so it’d be best if you let me handle it.”
“That makes sense. Alright.”
The witch gave a bright smile, nodded, and stepped back.
Drawing the sword from its sheath, she stepped forward and swung it, cutting the monster cleanly in half.
But that wasn’t the end.
Even split in two, it was still alive. Monsters with that level of regeneration don’t exist.
“As expected, something’s strange. For it to survive my attack.”
“It’s certainly odd.”
Lillian stepped forward, saying she’d take her turn.
She waved her staff, unleashing a powerful strike on the monster, but it remained unharmed.
It almost seemed like it had Nika’s regeneration ability.
“This is going to be difficult.”
“I’d love to capture it for experimentation, but what should we do? Should we just erase this entire space?”
“If I cut through the dimension, that might work, but the problem would be escaping afterward.”
If the world inside the Gate collapses, we might lose the exit entirely.
That’s why we were proceeding cautiously, but this was getting troublesome.
As I was contemplating our next move, I sensed a familiar presence.
【You still haven’t dealt with this?】
With Nika’s arrival came Master following closely behind.
“I came in because I was worried.”
“It seems I’ve made you worry.”
“Master…”
“Leave it to Nika now.”
With that, Master shouted “Nika!” and she lunged forward, starting to devour the monster.
Watching her eat it alive was unlike anything I had ever seen, even in the martial world.
Even the notorious Blood Demon seemed tame compared to Nika’s actions.
If I felt pity for the monster as it was eaten alive, that says it all.
Before long, Nika finished devouring the monster, slipped into Master’s arms, and the Gate began to glow brightly.
It was time to leave the Gate.
