Chapter 38
Before leaving the gate, Lillian handed me a new transparent potion. Upon drinking it, this time it tasted like melon.
“The flavor has changed again?”
“I’m making all the flavors I think you might like, Master!”
Lillian answered brightly as the Heavenly Demon sipped the potion, savoring the taste.
“This is the first time I’ve had something like this.”
“How is it? Does it suit your palate?”
“It’s sweet, so I like it.”
When did they get so close? Well, I suppose good relationships are always a positive thing.
Now that my body has turned invisible, shall we head out?
Exiting the gate, I found no hunters in sight, only Team Leader Cha Mi-rin standing at her post.
“You’ve arrived?”
Can she see me? That shouldn’t be possible.
She looked directly in our direction and spoke as though she could see us.
“I felt a presence. Was I wrong?”
As she tilted her head curiously, I realized she wasn’t seeing but detecting us through her senses.
Would it be rude to compare her to a keen-sensed dog? Probably.
“There’s no one else around but me, so you can relax.”
At her reassurance, I dispelled the potion’s effect, revealing us to her.
She stared at us, especially me, intently. By now, I knew the reason.
It wasn’t a green light of interest, but Lillian’s meddling, plain and simple.
I had even considered a second marriage, but the pain of goodbye is profound….
“We’ve handled the gate. But you don’t seem surprised anymore?”
“Of course not. After going through all sorts of trials, I’ve grown used to it.”
Her nonchalant response was met with a smooth reply. When I tried to excuse myself, she approached and clasped my hands tightly.
Ah, even though I’ve let go of the thought, this might make me consider a third….
“Please help us! Nationwide… no, worldwide chaos is breaking out! The Seoul gate has been dealt with, but requests for support are pouring in from Daegu and Busan! Those are suspected to be real S-rank gates!”
“I-I’ll help, so please let go of my hands!”
Once she secured my agreement, she naturally released my hands, and I took a step back.
“You’re shyer than you look. I’d have thought you’d made many women cry.”
“Is that a compliment?”
“Of course.”
I’d heard that being told you look like a gigolo means you’re very handsome, rather than looking kind or manly. Could it be true?
“So, which area is the most urgent?”
“Busan! Please head there immediately! A helicopter has been prepared and should arrive shortly!”
“Wait, didn’t you just say there was no one else here?!”
“There wasn’t.”
Her cheeky response left me speechless, and just then, the sound of a helicopter drew closer and landed in front of us.
Lillian and the Heavenly Demon watched it with wide-eyed curiosity.
Wait, you two can walk on air, and this amazes you?
“Is it fascinating?”
“Of course! This is revolutionary!”
“It’s intriguing. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.”
Excited, they boarded the helicopter faster than I did.
Naturally, I thought it would just be us, but the pilot disembarked, and Team Leader Cha Mi-rin took his place.
“Alright, fasten your helmets and seat belts tightly! It’s going to be a rough ride!”
“You can fly a helicopter too?!”
“Of course! I can do anything!”
With that, the helicopter gradually took off, as Lillian and the Heavenly Demon marveled at the experience, their eyes sparkling with excitement.
“Isn’t it fascinating, Nika?”
From inside my embrace, Nika poked her head out and said, “It’s amazing!” but somehow it felt like lip service.
Before long, she quietly slipped back into my arms.
If it’s fascinating, shouldn’t you keep watching it…?
Well, I suppose since Nika can fly, this might not seem so special.
The fact that our country boasts the highest number of S-rank Hunters relative to its territory is a tremendous blessing.
Neighboring Japan, for example, only has seven S-rank Hunters. Even though we lost one, we still have an overwhelming number.
And when you include unofficial S-ranks, the total becomes unimaginable.
Having S-rank Awakeners chatting behind me right now makes me feel incredibly reassured.
“The ocean is really beautiful.”
“It’s great that this world’s ocean doesn’t have any monsters living in it.”
“Do they serve food?”
Although their carefree attitude is a problem.
The gate we’re heading to is an S-rank gate, with the Shield Guild’s S-rank Hunter from Busan holding it back. However, reports indicate that it’ll break through soon.
Logically, if an S-rank can’t clear an S-rank gate, can it really be called S-rank? It should be SS-rank.
But logic-breaking events are happening all at once.
Even with A-rank Hunters gathered, they can’t clear an A-rank gate.
The whole world is in chaos—what exactly is going on?
I mean, the tower is being cleared within the deadlines, so why is this happening here?
“I’m hungry.”
“Hold on. I think I have some food in my subspace.”
“Really? That’s a relief.”
“When we return home, I’ll create a martial art technique suitable for Master. If you learn it, you’ll no longer need to eat to survive.”
“T-that’s not something I want…”
The atmosphere is so relaxed it feels like we’re heading on a picnic.
Sigh, we need to arrive as soon as possible.
As we speed up, the massive gate comes into view, surrounded by a sea of flames.
Fortunately, the citizens evacuated in time, so there weren’t significant casualties. But the fact that it happened at all is the real problem.
Additionally, countless Hunters are fighting the monsters spilling out of the gate, and the scene is utter chaos.
Because it’s difficult to approach, we tried to land as close as possible. But then the witch and the S-rank Hunter stood up, opened the helicopter door, and jumped out.
“There, I see it. I’ll go first.”
“I’ll join you.”
Then the door was naturally closed, leaving me alone with Han Ji-an.
“Um… Han Ji-an, aren’t you going with them?”
“If I jumped out, I’d end up in a hospital.”
He casually mentioned his frailty, and honestly, he does look frail.
With his tall stature and pale skin, you’d think he never goes outside, and his face is almost too handsome… Ahem.
“Then I’ll land nearby.”
“Yes.”
We landed in an empty field near the gate. As we disembarked, the screams we had heard earlier ceased.
The eerie silence spurred us to head to the site, where we found the remains of monsters scattered on the ground.
Approaching a Hunter who was sitting dazedly, I demanded an explanation, and they pointed blankly at the gate.
“T-two unidentified Hunters appeared, threw our guild master to the ground, and entered the gate.”
“Wait, what? They threw the Shield Guild’s guild master to the ground?”
One of Korea’s S-rank Hunters, known for his robust defense—Chulsoo—is the one they threw?
Looking closely toward the gate, something was stuck in the ground—Chulsoo?!
“Ah, ahjussi?!”
I hurried over and pulled him out of the ground. He was perfectly fine, without a scratch.
“Look who it is! Isn’t it our Mi-rin? Long time no see.”
“No, why were you stuck in the ground?!”
“Haha, young Hunters these days are brimming with strength.”
Chulsoo explained that he wanted to enter the gate with them, but they said he was in the way and pinned him to the ground.
How am I supposed to explain this? It’s driving me crazy.
This was supposed to be a grand reveal per Han Ji-an’s plan to transition from the shadows to the light, but now it looks like those two will steal the spotlight instead.
Or maybe that’s better?
After all, Han Ji-an is the Awakener Association’s ultimate weapon—no, ace… Anyway, he’s the most reliable Hunter we can entrust our future to.
Even if an S-rank loses to a monster, we can trust Han Ji-an to hold the line.
I was imagining the scenario with a smile when I heard labored breathing.
“Huff, huff. I-I’m here…”
Han Ji-an approached, drenched in sweat and out of breath, his body almost collapsing.
Did he run all the way from there to here?!
“I haven’t been active lately, so my stamina’s gotten really weak…”
And now he’s making excuses.
Is it really okay to entrust our future to him?
Inside the gate, a suspicious, radiant entity stirred.
An S-rank gate, like any other gate, contains a boss monster. But the strength and intelligence of this one were on an entirely different level.
“An uninvited guest has entered.”
