Chapter 30
—
“You’re just a freeloader. Stop clinging to my brother.”
The year I started university, Zhao Jie and I became classmates. Although we weren’t in the same department, we were both freshmen.
I had a soft, gentle personality and ignored him.
But Zhao Jie wasn’t one to back down.
“Cheng Xi, what are you so proud of all the time? You’re just an orphan raised by the Fu family, a little tramp. My brother only keeps you around as a bed warmer, and you really think you’re some kind of lady?”
The people around Zhao Jie burst out laughing.
“She is a lady—just not the daughter-of-a-rich-family kind.”
At that time, my face turned bright red. I felt so wronged that I wanted to cry.
Zhao Jie led his friends to surround me, their words filled with filth and malice.
Panicking, I tried to escape, and when I turned around, I saw Fu Mingyu standing not far away, his face dark.
I looked to him for help.
That was the first time he showed me such indifference. He gave me a look of disgust, then turned and walked away.
It was because of his tacit approval that Zhao Jie became even bolder in tormenting me.
Finally, during the autumn when I was twenty, on the night of Aunt Fu’s birthday party, Zhao Jie found an opportunity. He cornered me in the back garden and pinned me to the ground among the bushes.
He pressed me down, his voice dripping with disgusting threats.
“Cheng Xi, so many men have already touched you. Let me have a turn, won’t you?”
“You can’t keep all the fun for my brother. Let me have a taste too, hmm?”
I struggled desperately to push him away, but I couldn’t.
When I tried to scream, he covered my mouth. “If you dare make a sound, I’ll kill you.”
I wasn’t afraid of dying, but his strength was too much for me.
“Cheng Xi, everyone knows you like my brother. The Fu family took you in out of kindness, and now you’re biting the hand that feeds you, trying to use some marriage agreement to force him to marry you?” Zhao Jie sneered as he watched me struggle, his words cutting deeper than any blade.
“To tell you the truth, it was Mingyu who sent me here to teach you a lesson. He wants you to remember your place. You’re nothing more than a dog the Fu family raised.”
I stopped struggling, despair filling my eyes.
He thought I had given up and loosened his grip on me, eager to tear at my clothes.
Seizing the moment, I grabbed a rock from the ground and smashed it against his head.
Zhao Jie cried out in pain and fled in panic.
That night, I sat curled up in the back garden for a long time, hugging my knees.
The darkness fell, and the autumn rain soaked me to the bone.
It was in that moment I realized I had to leave.
I had to escape.
If I stayed, I would eventually die here—die at the hands of the Fu family.
I threw myself into my studies, working tirelessly to earn honours and scholarships. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t outrun the lies.
At school, rumours spread that Fu Mingyu was dating the goddess Bai Yuan. They were a golden couple, perfect for each other.
And me? I was the evil woman who schemed against the goddess, who spread lies and manipulated others.
Zhao Jie led the charge, calling me shameless and promiscuous. He even claimed I tried to seduce him.
I was powerless to explain myself, knowing that any defense would only trap me further.
The harder I tried to clear my name, the deeper I sank into their web of lies.
Their ridicule crushed my dignity bit by bit, driving me closer to despair.
During my junior year, the school announced an exchange program. It was a rare opportunity, available only to top students who excelled in all aspects.
For the first time in a long time, I felt hope. If I could win that spot and leave, everything might get better.
But I watched helplessly as the opportunity I worked so hard for was taken by Fu Mingyu and given to Bai Yuan’s younger sister.
I broke down, screaming and crying, asking him why.
Why did he hate me so much yet refuse to let me go?
He said, “You’ll have plenty of chances in the future. It doesn’t have to be this one. Bai Yuan’s sister has been weak and sickly since childhood. This opportunity is very important to her. Can’t you just let her have it?”
Let her have it.
I had to let everything go for Bai Yuan.
Why?
I once asked Fu Mingyu that very question.
“Why? Why do you treat me this way?”
He replied, “Because you eat our food, live in our house. The Fu family has shown you kindness you’ll never be able to repay in your lifetime! It’s just an exchange program. What right do you have to shout at me?”
That day, I collapsed on the ground like a stray dog someone had kicked aside.
