Surviving as the Hidden Mastermind in an Academy Story Chapter 101

Chapter 101

‘This is bad.’

Ordin clenched his teeth as he watched the mist approach without resistance.

This was the worst-case scenario among all the simulations he had run countless times.

Every prepared spell was rendered useless, and ultimately, countless sacrifices were made due to the Death Mist.

Once again.

Whooong—

He imbued his sword with mana and swung with all his might, but it was useless.

The advancing black mist seemed immune to the laws of physics.

When wind blows, gases should disperse, yet the black mist didn’t budge.

Even when struck with a mana-infused blade, it only wavered momentarily before advancing again.

If he were alone, it might have been easier to accept.

With an unguardable attack, the only option was to evade.

But now, retreating recklessly wasn’t an option.

If he couldn’t stop the mist, he would once again witness his subordinates perish in the same way.

“Damn it!”

But no solution was in sight.

In this critical moment.

Ordin alternated his gaze between the mist, now almost upon him, and his retreating subordinates.

No matter how he looked, the speed of their retreat was far too slow compared to the mist’s advance.

‘At a time like this, what do I…?!’

Strength drained from Ordin’s grip, and the sword he had held aloft fell downward.

Whooong—

Amid the sound of the Death Mist, another distinct, alien sound reached Ordin’s ears.

The sound didn’t originate from one place.

It seemed to come from all directions, capturing Ordin’s attention.

And he saw it clearly.

The black mist, which hadn’t dispersed no matter what the mages did, now seemed to vanish as if being sucked away.

“Huh…?”

Whoooong—

With a low hum, the mist disappeared.

Ordin reflexively turned to look at Amilion Stappen, who was behind him.

In this situation, the only one capable of such a feat would be Professor Amilion.

‘It’s not her?’

He thought Amilion might have used some special spell, but that wasn’t the case.

Amilion, like Ordin, was staring in awe at the vanishing mist, seemingly mesmerized.

“What… is this?”

Finally regaining his composure, Ordin assessed the situation.

The black mist that had surrounded them was almost entirely gone.

The tree and the White-Robed Man, which had been obscured by the mist, were visible again.

“Ho.”

And from the White-Robed Man came a sound of admiration, as if he too were surprised.

Ordin didn’t know what was happening, but he felt a glimmer of hope.

The mist had cleared, and the enemy was in sight.

Instinctively, Ordin knew this was the moment.

This was the only opportunity to close the gap with the mage—especially one capable of using such dangerous and intricate magic.

“Raaaah!”

Letting out a battle cry, Ordin enveloped his body and sword in mana and charged toward the White-Robed Man.

There was no time to think about how the mist had vanished or the enemy’s reaction.

To cast such a large and powerful spell again would certainly take time.

Ordin intended to exploit that timing to capture the mage.

Now, it seemed possible.

Ordin tightened his grip on his sword, and the White-Robed Man leapt backward to evade his strike.

‘What kind of mage…?!’

This was another unexpected development.

Who would’ve thought a mage could leap like that?

The White-Robed Man floated into the air like a feather before landing far away.

Though surprised by the unexpected lightness and strength of the jump, Ordin quickly regained focus.

If the enemy could move quickly, all he had to do was move even faster to catch him.

Tap—

Ordin leapt toward the man with even more speed and force.

It was no exaggeration to compare his speed to that of a flying arrow.

This was one of Ordin’s specialties.

As Ordin believed he was about to strike true this time, something blocked his vision.

Fwoosh—

It was the same mist as before.

‘What?’

He hadn’t expected the enemy to be able to re-cast it so quickly.

‘It’s already too late.’

Instinctively, Ordin knew there was no way to avoid the mist.

Plowing through it was the best option.

“Raaahhh!”

Letting out a thunderous shout, Ordin charged toward the mist.

He had already braced himself.

Whoooong—

“Good grief.”

“…Huh?”

Ordin was forced to slow down.

The mist that had been blocking his way suddenly disappeared, revealing someone standing in front of him.

This figure was dressed in black robes, the complete opposite of the White-Robed Man.

Though he could only see their back, Ordin felt an odd sense of familiarity at the sight of the robe.

“No matter how urgent it is, charging straight into that seems a bit much, don’t you think?”

The voice was soft, almost feminine, but with an androgynous tone.

The speaker’s words carried a characteristic hint of sarcasm.

And a familiar design on the black clothing.

‘No way?’

Ordin doubted his eyes as he stared intently at the sudden appearance.

“You…”

While Ordin was blankly staring at the black attire, the White-Robed Man muttered to himself.

At the faint murmur, the figure in black turned their head.

Thanks to that, Ordin saw it clearly.

The black mask worn by the person in black.

“Why are you here?!”

With the sight of the mask, Ordin was sure.

The sudden appearance of the black-clad figure was someone Ordin knew.

And not in a good way.

“The Black Shadow Corps scum!”

The thief who had stolen the kingdom’s greatest treasure, the Dragon Heart, years ago.

The leader of the Black Shadow Corps.

“…It’s been a while?”

“You bastard!!”

Ordin’s anger surged at the leader of the Black Shadow Corps, who greeted him with a calm demeanor.

It was utterly infuriating.

***

I had no intention of interfering, but I had no choice.

If left as it was, even Professor Amilion Stappen could end up in serious danger.

Thanks to Greenie’s discreet movement, I was able to approach unnoticed, which was ideal.

The magic cast by the mage, likely a member of the Nameless Organization, was extremely troublesome.

The black mist spreading from beneath the caster’s feet seemed to have no effect on them.

It swept relentlessly toward Ordin and the O’Neill Knight Order.

The knights had erected barriers and cast various spells, but they seemed ineffective.

I even snuck in unnoticed and unleashed a strong gust of wind, but it had no effect.

Despite being in mist form, it wouldn’t disperse with the wind.

It was absurd, but it was magic, after all.

The black mist felt incredibly heavy and sticky.

It gave the impression that it couldn’t be countered with similar magic.

Indeed, neither Professor Amilion nor the O’Neill Kingdom’s mages could do anything about it.

Nor could Ordin.

‘No other choice, I guess.’

When Ordin recklessly charged toward the ominous mist, I decided I had to step in.

He wasn’t directly related to me, but letting him die like this felt a bit wrong.

Not to mention, he had suffered plenty because of me in the past.

“…It’s been a while?”

“You bastard!!”

I expected Ordin to react poorly to my appearance, but this was more extreme than anticipated.

As soon as he recognized me, Ordin harshly called out, his tone full of anger.

“Let’s deal with that thing first, shall we?”

“You insolent… Don’t tell me all of this is your doing?!”

“Of course not. I’m saying we should catch that guy first.”

As expected, the moment I appeared, Ordin jumped to a ridiculous conclusion.

This is why one’s image is important.

With such a strong impression of me as a ‘villain,’ it’s no wonder I’m misunderstood even in a situation like this.

“What are you plotting?!”

“It’s not a plot—”

Fwoosh—

Was the White-Robed Man jealous of our conversation?

Without a word, they released the mist toward us.

Whooong—

But, of course, that kind of attack couldn’t reach me.

They must have aimed the mist to hit me directly, but my defenses were already impenetrable.

No physical attack could breach the space surrounding me.

“If you don’t want to cooperate, suit yourself.”

I gave up trying to convince Ordin and decided to focus on my own task.

At least he wasn’t doing anything catastrophically stupid, like attacking me first.

Whooong—

Clearing away the mist once more, I moved toward the White-Robed Man.

The figure flinched in surprise as I suddenly appeared beside them and leaped into the air.

Their agility was uncharacteristically sharp for a mage.

Whooong—

“Where’s the student?”

“Urgh.”

I used Spatial Movement to appear directly in front of the airborne figure and calmly asked.

Although their face was obscured, I could sense the White-Robed Man’s visible panic.

“I asked, where is she?”

Instead of answering, the White-Robed Man extended a hand toward me midair.

I could feel mana gathering in their hand.

It wasn’t ordinary mana.

This was black magic.

The kind of mana I had encountered all too often while dealing with Randgar Bayel’s black tentacles.

Flash—

However, the magic they wielded wasn’t the unrefined mana masses Randgar had used.

It was a properly structured spell, calculated and deliberate.

Black spikes emerged from their hand, aiming to pierce through me immediately.

Whooong—

Of course, none of the attacks could touch me.

“This is…”

Finally, a voice emerged from the White-Robed Man, still hidden beneath the heavy hood.

Pop—

“Huh?”

And then, just like that, they vanished.

What the hell? This is ridiculous.
