Chapter 27

“Something he likes to eat… hmm.”

At the chef’s question, Del’s face stiffened.

Despite serving Kainel for years, he realized he had no clue about the duke’s likes or dislikes.

‘He’s never expressed any preference.’

Both Del and the chef let out a sigh simultaneously.

“Excuse me…”

A maid, standing quietly nearby, cautiously spoke up.

“There’s a place my younger brother frequents.”

“A regular spot?”

Del looked intrigued, while the chef frowned.

Did she just suggest serving street food to the duke?

The maid hurriedly explained, sensing the chef’s displeasure.

“M-my brother once recovered quickly after eating stew from that place when he wasn’t feeling well. I’m sorry.”

“Stew, you say?” Del asked, ignoring the chef’s disapproving glare.

“Del, surely you’re not considering serving the duke street food?”

“If he eats it, why not?”

“Pardon?”

“If it gets him to eat, does it matter where it’s from?”

Del turned back to the maid, a determined look in his eyes.

“Where is this place?”

“Thank you for waiting, Miss.”

The insurance company representative handed Ceres a bracelet with a bright smile.

“Your claim of 879 gold and 95 silver has been processed.”

The bracelet, linked to the Drow family’s bank account, facilitated all financial transactions.

‘879 gold, huh. Not bad.’

It did bother her slightly that this money was tied to Agne’s schemes.

‘She even bought insurance.’

Ceres recently discovered that Agne had secretly taken out insurance policies under Yulia’s name, even before the child’s health had deteriorated.

‘She planned to cash this out later.’

Agne had also taken out a life insurance policy on Yulia.

Learning this made Ceres seriously consider sneaking into Agne’s prison cell and giving her a thorough beating.

As Ceres exited the insurance office, she spotted a familiar figure.

‘That’s… Dave’s father.’

It was the man she’d seen with Yulia in the bookstore, rumored to have been abandoned by his wife.

The man was speaking with another insurance representative.

“Here are the policies under your son and wife’s names.”

“Thank you. By the way…”

“Yes, sir?”

“I’m just curious—how long must someone be missing to be declared deceased?”

“For cases related to the Black Forest, one year. Otherwise, it’s usually five years. In either case, we send investigators to confirm.”

“Oh, I see.”

“Do you have any more questions?”

…Insurance?

Hearing snippets of the conversation, Ceres cast a curious glance.

Why would Dave’s father suddenly be verifying insurance policies for his wife and son, who supposedly ran away?

After observing their exchange for a moment longer, Ceres lost interest and left the scene.

“Yawn… How long has it been?”

“Thirty minutes.”

“Damn, can’t those bastards eat and leave quickly?”

“Should I drag them out?”

“Don’t. If the owner catches you, you’re done for.”

Delasi 1st Avenue was as lively as ever.

Among the various establishments, a small, shabby building stood out due to the unusually long line of people outside.

“Where your feets rest”

Passersby glanced curiously at the line of disgruntled customers but quickly moved on—it was a common sight.

Step, step.

Someone confidently approached the entrance, bypassing the long line.

“Who’s that guy?”

“Dunno. Is he crazy?”

Chaian de Devrica, casually walking toward the entrance, drew sharp glares from the waiting crowd.

“Hey, you.”

“…Me?”

Chaian turned at the curt call, meeting the narrowed eyes of the customers.

“Don’t you see the line?”

“No cutting in line, buddy.”

“If you don’t want to get punched, get in the back.”

Chaian smiled awkwardly and gestured apologetically.

“I’m actually acquainted with the owner.”

“And?”

“Excuse me?”

“What’s your point?”

“…I wasn’t planning to eat as a customer…”

“Oh, so you’re not going to eat anything? Great, off you go then.”

“……”

That wasn’t true.

The enticing smell and the sound of chopping from inside had piqued his curiosity.

Unable to counter the jeering crowd, Chaian reluctantly shuffled to the back of the line.

‘I should’ve just teleported inside.’

As he glanced at the seemingly endless line, Chaian pouted.

“Why are these people so slow?”

“Exactly.”

“Oh! Did you see that? They just ordered more! Isn’t it unfair to eat two servings while we’re waiting outside?”

“Right? That guy always does this. Sometimes he even orders three bowls.”

“This guy… absolutely shameless.”

Grumbling with the others in line, Chaian began to bond with them over shared frustrations.

“Is this where we line up?”

“Yes.”

Without turning, Chaian answered the new arrival, who turned out to be none other than Kainel’s aide, Del.

The very shop that the maid had recommended was now Del’s destination as well.

‘So many customers.’

On the surface, it was an incredibly shabby shop.

Perhaps it looked even more rundown because the neighboring shops were unusually fancy.

However, seeing the people inside enjoying their food brought a satisfied smile to Del’s face.

‘Everyone looks so happy.’

It was as if their happiness was visible to the naked eye.

The expressions of people eating nothing more than a bowl of stew were filled with joy.

That alone seemed to make standing in this long line worthwhile.

If only the food here could even slightly suit Kainel’s taste and bring such a smile to his face…

‘…Kainel smiling?’

Just imagining it gave him goosebumps.

He decided to stop thinking about it.

Thud, thud, thud.

At that moment, a small figure darted past the many people and ran quickly toward the shop.
