Chapter 63
Judging by the direction of the spear and where Eden’s gaze was fixed…
‘Is he aiming for the leader?’
The one particularly large, with a wild mane, stood out. Its size and strength were nearly double that of the others.
I watched nervously.
‘Can Eden really handle this?’
Monsters are generally categorized from S-rank to D-rank.
- D-rank: Creatures like slimes or fairies with little to no combat ability or who are friendly toward humans.
- C-rank: Beings like orcs or Sudra, whose intelligence has deteriorated but possess raw, overwhelming physical strength.
- B-rank: Monsters like skeletons, with intelligence roughly equivalent to humans.
- A-rank: Entities like ghost knights or spirits, imbued with high-level knowledge.
- S-rank: Transcendent beings like dragons.
Among them, Fenrir Wolves are A-rank monsters, surpassing human physical capabilities by far.
Even an ordinary Fenrir is tough to deal with, but their leader?
‘Especially from this distance…’
A poorly aimed or missed attack would only alert the Fenrirs, making the hunt exponentially harder.
I hesitated, wondering if I should stop him.
Whoosh—.
But Eden had already released his spear.
***
As Eden stepped forward, gripping his spear, a thought crossed his mind.
‘Am I even useful?’
Back when he had resigned himself to life, snuffing out the light of his existence, and awaiting death…
“I’ll help you find the value in your life.”
She was a light that pierced his darkness.
A warmth so profound, so comforting, he couldn’t look away.
He wanted to protect that light—the one who had revived him.
But not once had he successfully protected it.
Instead, he had always been the one protected by her.
The shame of fleeing during the assault on the Fire’s Stronghold while she risked her life to save their allies haunted him.
He had felt powerless, useless.
It was like he had become a failure, a defeated man.
Did he even deserve to stand beside that radiant light?
It was as though he was sinking back into the endless abyss of darkness, to the same hopeless place he had been before meeting her.
But he wasn’t going to give up and sit idly this time.
‘Live for me.’
Because the light had told him so.
For now, he would stick by her until the end.
He would survive and eventually stand tall by her side.
So, he had to take a step forward, no matter how small.
Fortunately, his current opponent was a good start.
[The Sage of Death constellation is enraged.]
Eden’s constellation was furious.
[The Sage of Death bestows a portion of its authority upon its avatar.]
The Fenrir Wolves were monstrous beings born from the myths of a beast that killed gods.
Seeing them had stoked the constellation’s fury, and that fury became power.
[The Sage of Death demands immediate punishment for the heinous beast.]
“Be quiet, old man. I get it, okay?”
The overwhelming surge of energy coursing through his body filled Eden with exhilaration.
Ignoring the loud, angry messages from his constellation, Eden raised his spear.
A purple Ghost Flame ignited in one eye, and his muscles tightened and coiled with tension.
Darkness, death, and destructive energy converged at the tip of his spear.
Crackle.
A streak of black lightning crackled and burned.
Though it was power temporarily granted by his constellation’s anger, it was a force he aimed to master as his own one day.
Maybe then, he’d be worthy to stand by her side.
[The divine spear Gungnir’s authority is invoked.]
The legendary spear of the gods, said to pierce its target without fail, cleaved through the air, black lightning trailing behind it.
***
The black lightning seemed to transcend space, piercing the Fenrir leader.
It was as if the rules of the world had bent to divine authority.
This was the power of Odin, Eden’s constellation.
How could Eden possess such power?
“Eden!”
Startled, I called out. Eden turned to me with a faint smile and asked cautiously.
“Does this mean I get a pat too, savior?”
What’s with these people thinking I’m some patting machine?
Why are there so many who want me to pat them?
“You…! Ugh, fine. I’ll pat you—really hard.”
Given how the Fenrir pack was now leaderless and in disarray, his accomplishment certainly deserved a pat.
Though, honestly, if anyone just asked for a pat, I’d give it to them anyway.
“Woof, woof!”
I tilted my head slightly, feeling as if I had adopted a pack of oversized dogs.
‘Grrr, woof! Woof!’
The booming bark of a real oversized dog jolted me back to reality.
“Everyone, prepare for battle!”
Even though the pack had lost their leader, this was no time to let our guard down.
Disoriented and scattered as they were, the Fenrir Wolves were still A-rank monsters.
“Support your comrades. Let’s make sure no one gets hurt this time!”
However, looking around at our team members…
A disorganized pack of wolves without a leader didn’t seem like much of a threat.
And just as I expected, the battle unfolded without much difficulty.
Those with weaker combat abilities worked together to efficiently repel the monsters, while the well-known powerhouses from the original story…
‘They’re incredible.’
There was no need to say more.
In fact, Caltain Ilion’s party, the original protagonist’s group, was ruthlessly annihilating the wolves to the point where I almost pitied them.
“Hahaha! Dogs that bite humans? You need a good scolding!”
Winfred, who easily defeated the agile Fenrir Wolves despite his blindness, was as sharp as ever.
“You’re good kids. Now rest peacefully.”
Chrissy, the Illusion Empress, was effortlessly hunting the wolves. The moment they stepped into her illusionary domain, they turned into docile puppies, and she struck their vital points with precision.
“Where do you think you’re going? Your fragile teeth and claws are no match for me!”
Darwin, with his overwhelming physical prowess, was literally tearing the wolves apart.
Our faction certainly had its share of extraordinary powerhouses.
Of course, the one making the most significant impact was Xenon, who gracefully slaughtered the wolves as if it were second nature.
Well, he was a hunter in his previous class, so it was no surprise he handled them with such ease.
At this rate, the upcoming boss battle…
And even the battle at the Thousand Origins Stronghold seemed manageable.
“This feels doable.”
I smiled at the sight of my reliable comrades gathering around me.
Agatha, I’ll make sure to wipe that smug look off your face.
Just wait.
***
After the noisy battle ended, we decided to take a brief moment to regroup before entering the boss room.
Every minute was precious, but rushing too much could cost us something far more valuable.
Even minor wounds, if left untreated, could fester and worsen.
If we pushed our injured comrades too hard, the burden would inevitably fall on the healthier members, reducing both efficiency and morale.
So, this rest wasn’t just a necessity but also part of my strategy.
‘It’s been a while since I’ve had a moment to relax.’
Admittedly, I had a bit of personal motive for this break too.
Leaning back, I let the rare sense of freedom wash over me as I gazed at the clear, beautiful sky.
The white clouds rippled like waves, and the blue sky stretched open as if ready to swallow them whole.
Beneath it, a vast mountainous region sprawled, with a massive spring flowing through it, showcasing nature’s grandeur.
If not for the scattered monster corpses, this could have been mistaken for a paradise where immortals lived.
Lost in the breathtaking scenery, I felt a brief sense of peace.
This was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful settings described in Three Lives Chronicle.
Closing my eyes, I could almost feel the cool, gentle breeze more vividly.
“So then…”
“Hahaha, did he really do that?”
The soft wind carried the lively chatter of my comrades.
Most were seated on the ground, sipping potions and chatting or meditating with their eyes closed.
Humming lightly, I watched them as they finally looked at ease.
“…Hmm?”
I stopped when I noticed a familiar figure in the distance.
“What do you think? Compared to the last stronghold?”
Approaching Yeriel, who was wandering alone in the field, I struck up a conversation.
“Oh, Wendy.”
Yeriel greeted me with a bright smile.
“You must be tired. Come and rest.”
There was no reason to refuse his thoughtful invitation, so I nodded and sat down beside him.
“Thank you.”
My gaze naturally turned toward Yeriel, who was sitting next to me.
‘Come to think of it, it’s been a while since we’ve sat like this.’
I found myself staring at Yeriel.
In this short time, had he grown taller? He seemed slightly bigger than before.
Even his previously delicate-looking shoulders appeared a bit broader.
And his golden hair, shining in the sunlight, looked more radiant than ever.
Was this also a result of awakening?
“Beautiful.”
I muttered quietly while staring at his sparkling golden hair.
“Pardon?”
Startled, Yeriel stiffened slightly and turned his head slowly.
Meeting his wide green eyes, I repeated myself.
Did he not hear me?
“Your hair, I said it’s beautiful.”
“Oh.”
Yeriel’s face turned as red as it could possibly get.
