Chapter 19: He Said I Am Scheming
“This is the surveillance footage from near the end of the street alley, where Cheng Xi was last seen going,” Lu Zhe warned Liu Bin, implying that it was best for him to tell the truth.
Liu Bin panicked. “She can go wherever she wants. We didn’t let her go on the 15th!”
“Still not telling the truth?” Lu Zhe slammed the table.
Liu Bin, also irritated, replied, “This was all planned by Fu Mingyu. If there’s anything you want to ask, ask him. I don’t know if he sent Cheng Xi to the alley on the 15th. I have an alibi for that day; I was drunk at Nightfall Bar, and a few of the hostesses can surely attest to that.”
Lu Zhe glanced at the time and signaled his colleagues to take Liu Bin away.
“Brother, could it be that Fu Mingyu assaulted Cheng Xi, and fearing exposure, used the serial killer’s name to kill her…?”
Lu Zhe didn’t respond. He too suspected Fu Mingyu.
I sighed quietly, listening, uncertain about what Fu Mingyu might say during his interrogation later.
Soon, Fu Mingyu entered, sitting down at the interrogation table with an unhappy expression.
“Mr. Fu, there are some things you need to clarify,” the recording officer said sternly.
Fu Mingyu, growing impatient, responded, “I have the right to remain silent until my lawyer arrives.”
“If you want Cheng Xi to die, you can stay silent forever,” Lu Zhe said coldly.
Fu Mingyu frowned and remained silent.
I smirked, finding his expression utterly ironic.
He must be hoping I would just die already.
“On the 13th, 14th, and 15th, you had Cheng Xi wear Bai Yuan’s clothes and walk alone in Hongtong Alley and End of Street Alley to lure out the killer, right?” Lu Zhe’s voice was low.
Perhaps the police were too cautious to take such risks, but Fu Mingyu had thrown Cheng Xi into danger despite his lack of preparedness.
Fu Mingyu glanced at Lu Zhe but continued to say nothing, clearly unwilling to cooperate.
Lu Zhe, appearing to empathize deeply with the victims, slammed the table angrily. “If Cheng Xi was targeted by the killer because of your arrogance and was killed, imagine how desperate she must have felt at her end!”
I stood quietly in the interrogation room, trembling.
Lu Zhe was right; I was… utterly desperate.
Being betrayed and pushed into hell by the person I loved the most, who had once saved me.
“Officer Lu, provoking me won’t work. You don’t understand Cheng Xi. I am the person who knows her best in the world. Until I see her body, I won’t believe any news about her death,” Fu Mingyu responded calmly.
He truly did not believe I could be dead.
“On the 15th, Cheng Xi entered End of Street Alley and then disappeared. Surveillance shows she never came out,” Lu Zhe said, feeling powerless and believing Fu Mingyu to be beyond help.
He also felt sympathy for Cheng Xi.
“There is a time discrepancy. I don’t know if Officer Lu did this deliberately, but we did indeed have Cheng Xi go to lure the killer on the 13th and 14th. But on the 15th, no one sent her there,” Fu Mingyu said seriously. “And she went to Hongtong Alley, not End of Street Alley.”
Lu Zhe scrutinized Fu Mingyu, as if trying to see through him and determine whether he was lying.
I also stood behind Lu Zhe, quietly observing Fu Mingyu.
How laughable…
“Tell me about Cheng Xi. What kind of person is she in your eyes?” Lu Zhe did not show Fu Mingyu the evidence or surveillance footage but instead asked him to describe me…
What was I really like to him?
“She?” Fu Mingyu sneered. “On the outside, she seems pure, but she’s actually scheming and deep-minded.”
Lu Zhe leaned back in his chair, quietly watching Fu Mingyu.
“She’s our adopted daughter, and has loved me for many years. To marry me, she went to great lengths, even trying to harm my fiancée,” Fu Mingyu said with evident hatred.
I stood numb in front of him, wanting to slap him but feeling it pointless.
“Bai Yuan?” Lu Zhe seemed to have grasped something. “Could you tell us about the conflict between Cheng Xi and Bai Yuan?”
