Chapter 20: They Are Willing to Believe Bai Yuan
Fu Mingyu frowned, seemingly regretting his earlier words and likely fearing trouble for Bai Yuan. “Sorry, this is a private matter, not convenient to disclose.”
Lu Zhe didn’t say much more, as a police officer came up and whispered something in his ear.
It was probably about Fu Mingyu’s lawyer arriving.
Lu Zhe had no choice but to let Fu Mingyu leave first.
Fu Mingyu stood up, tidied his clothes, and appeared as composed as ever, as if nothing could make him panic.
At the door, Fu Mingyu suddenly stopped, turned to look at Lu Zhe. “I’ve said it before, if you want to solve the case and catch the serial killer, stop focusing on Cheng Xi. She’s very smart, smarter than you think. This is just her way of forcing me to marry her, but she doesn’t know it misleads your investigation.”
Lu Zhe remained silent.
“She’s very willful. I will educate her properly once we find her. But if your investigation gets misled, that’s Lu Zhe’s own mistake, not anyone else’s, right?” Fu Mingyu asked meaningfully.
Lu Zhe lightly tapped his fingers on the table, still not speaking.
I didn’t know what Lu Zhe was thinking, but at that moment, I saw Fu Mingyu’s warning.
He was threatening the police.
I knew Fu Mingyu’s words weren’t for me but for Bai Yuan.
He feared Bai Yuan would be implicated because the next person to be interrogated was Bai Yuan.
I sat in the empty chair beside me, watching Bai Yuan walk in.
Dying wasn’t so bad; at least I could observe how cold and dark human hearts could be.
“Ms. Bai Yuan, Mr. Fu mentioned that you and Cheng Xi have some personal grievances. Please explain in detail,” Lu Zhe said, realizing Bai Yuan’s intention to deceive.
“Xi Xi…” Bai Yuan’s eyes reddened. “She’s a good girl, just a bit willful. I’m sorry for causing trouble. She’s Mingyu’s sister, my sister too. We didn’t educate her well. Once we find her, we’ll discipline her strictly.”
Bai Yuan’s acting was so good it felt like I was watching a drama.
How could she lie so effortlessly, without a hint of guilt?
“Cheng Xi likes Fu Mingyu. Do you know they’re not biological siblings?” Lu Zhe pointed out, seeing through Bai Yuan’s attempt to change the topic.
“Indeed, they’re not biological siblings. I’ve always known Xi Xi likes Mingyu. When Mingyu first introduced me to her, she warned me that she was Mingyu’s fiancée and told me to stay away from him. She also said… if I continued to pursue Mingyu, she would have someone kill me,” Bai Yuan said, lowering her head with redder eyes.
But soon, Bai Yuan smiled and said, “This child just speaks without thinking. Her heart isn’t bad.”
My hands clenched tightly, rage and hatred boiling inside me, almost uncontrollable.
I never threatened her; it was she who had people killed me.
“You liar! You’re a liar!” I stood up and rushed over, gripping Bai Yuan’s neck, desperately trying to kill her.
But it was in vain.
“About two or three months ago, I don’t remember the exact date. Mingyu brought me home, and Xi Xi and I had a conflict. She pushed me down the stairs, causing serious injuries and hospitalization. I almost didn’t survive,” Bai Yuan sighed, as if disappointed.
Lu Zhe frowned. “Cheng Xi is suspected of intentional harm. Why didn’t you report it to the police?”
“She’s Mingyu’s sister. She’s just too willful. I wanted to give her a chance. If I had reported it, she would have been sentenced. She’s so young; I didn’t want to ruin her. Give her a chance,” Bai Yuan spoke as if she were a saint from heaven.
I cried out of control, struggling, hitting her, but it was useless.
Liar, you’re a liar!
Lu Zhe appeared thoughtful, not showing much emotion.
I began to fear, fearing that Lu Zhe might also be deceived by Bai Yuan.
In my memory, Fu Mingyu completely changed after meeting Bai Yuan. He began to favor Bai Yuan, trusting her exclusively. His friends in life also turned into Bai Yuan’s friends.
It seemed like she had a magical power to make people around her like and trust her.
While I was just their object of disdain and abuse.
“Don’t believe her, please, don’t believe her. She’s the one who caused my death, please,” I begged Lu Zhe and the other officers, but no one paid attention.
“Ms. Bai Yuan, where were you on the 13th, 14th, and 15th nights?” Lu Zhe asked with an unreadable expression.
“Since Mingyu thought Xi Xi owed me, he had her lure out the killer. She only went for about two days, probably the 13th and 14th. I’m not sure about the 15th,” Bai Yuan said, appearing thoughtful.
“Alright, thank you for cooperating, Miss Bai. Xiao Zhang, take Miss Bai out,” Lu Zhe said, his attitude toward Bai Yuan much more friendly.
I knew… Lu Zhe believed it.
They all believed Bai Yuan’s words.
