Chapter 27
—
The water cup in Qin Ruolin’s hand fell to the ground with a crash. She suddenly stood up, her lips pale. “What… whose fingernails were those?”
After asking, Qin Ruolin became frantic. She threw off her coat and ran outside in a panic. She was terrified I might be dead, but even more scared that I might be alive and suffering.
Crying, I spread my arms wide to stop her. I truly… only had her left.
“Don’t go, Linlin, don’t go.”
Lu Zhe reacted quickly and grabbed Qin Ruolin’s wrist. “Calm down… Maybe it’s just a trick by the murderer. Maybe… maybe she’s still alive. Don’t act impulsively.”
Qin Ruolin collapsed to her knees and clung to Lu Zhe’s leg, crying uncontrollably. “Please, please find Xixi quickly. I’m begging you…”
“I can… I can help you lure him out. I’m begging you, please.”
Qin Ruolin sobbed, pleading with the police to hurry and find me. She couldn’t bear to think of the pain I might be enduring if they delayed any longer.
I crouched on the ground, clutching my head in terror, trembling. I couldn’t bring myself to imagine what that murderer had done to me before I died.
He pulled out my fingernails, shattered the joints in my fingers to make my hands look less grotesque and terrifying.
The memories were too painful. I couldn’t remember them. I couldn’t even recall where I died.
All I could do was cry and beg alongside Qin Ruolin, urging the police to solve the case quickly.
It was around 1 a.m. when Fu Mingyu arrived, his expression grim.
Lu Zhe must have notified him.
“We’ve found another victim. The fingernails on the body belong to Cheng Xi,” Lu Zhe said indifferently.
Fu Mingyu frowned. “So, that means the body isn’t hers?”
Lu Zhe stared at Fu Mingyu. “Do you think Cheng Xi is the kind of person who would pull out her own fingernails and put them on a corpse?”
It was unclear to Lu Zhe what kind of image Fu Mingyu had of me.
I was curious too. Did Fu Mingyu see me as someone so insane?
Fu Mingyu clenched his fists tightly, his voice low. “She’s just a lunatic…”
I stared at Fu Mingyu in shock. Even at this point, with my fingernails ripped out, he still didn’t believe I was dead!
“Fu Mingyu! Are you even human?” I yelled at him, rushing forward to grab his collar. “You bastard!”
I cried and slapped him, something the old me would never have dared to do.
But even if I did, it had no effect—it didn’t hurt him at all.
“In order to marry me, to eliminate threats around her, she pushed Yuan Yuan down the stairs to silence her… She drugged my drinks, put rat poison in Yuan Yuan’s cake. What wouldn’t she do!” Fu Mingyu’s eyes reddened, his tone verging on hysteria.
“What nonsense are you spewing! Even now, you’re slandering Xixi! Do you know that because you claimed Xixi hadn’t gone missing, the police investigation into her was delayed? It’s all your fault, all your fault!”
Qin Ruolin screamed, rushing forward and slapping Fu Mingyu across the face. “If anything happens to Xixi, you’re the murderer! You’re an accomplice! You bastard!”
“You’ve done so many disgusting things to Xixi. What kind of man are you!”
Qin Ruolin cried as she hit Fu Mingyu.
Fu Mingyu just stood there, letting Qin Ruolin hit him.
“Qin Ruolin, what gives you the right to hit Mingyu?” Bai Yuan suddenly barged in, shoving Qin Ruolin aside.
Panicking, I tried to shield Qin Ruolin, but Bai Yuan’s strength was too much. Qin Ruolin lost her balance and fell backward.
I reached out, trying to catch her, but my hands passed right through her.
Thankfully… Lu Zhe rushed forward and caught Qin Ruolin.
“Fu Mingyu, do you have any evidence for what you just said?” Lu Zhe frowned.
“Evidence? What evidence do you need to leave us alone? We’re about to get married. You all can’t stand to see others happy, can you?” Bai Yuan seemed to snap, pulling back her hair to show the scars on her head. Her eyes reddened as she showed them to the police. “These are the scars from when Cheng Xi pushed me down the stairs!”
“And the records from the hospital proving I had my stomach pumped! What more evidence do you need?”
Fu Mingyu embraced Bai Yuan with a look of distress, soothing her in a soft voice. “Yuan Yuan, don’t be afraid, don’t get upset… It’s okay. I’m here.”
“Cheng Xi just wants me dead! She just wants to torment us! What will it take for her to stop!” Bai Yuan cried, collapsing into Fu Mingyu’s arms. Her acting was impeccable.
I watched Fu Mingyu numbly, seeing only his unwavering trust in Bai Yuan.
With Bai Yuan’s performance, he would never believe me.
“Officer Lu, Yuan Yuan and I have decided to move up our wedding. Here’s the invitation. If you want to catch Cheng Xi, come to our wedding the day after tomorrow.” Fu Mingyu handed Lu Zhe an invitation and left with Bai Yuan in his arms.
“Fu Mingyu, if Xixi is really dead… will you regret it?” Qin Ruolin asked, sitting on the ground.
Fu Mingyu stopped in his tracks and turned to look at Qin Ruolin. “If she’s truly dead, I’ll bury myself with her. If she’s alive and orchestrating all this to torment Yuan Yuan, I’ll have her committed to a mental institution where she’ll never get out!”
