Chapter 1
[Monster alert, monster alert. Citizens, please evacuate immediately.]
In the middle of the noisy sirens and the voices of people, a giant monster stood on the road.
A monster resembling a frog. The monster was flicking its tongue, destroying everything it could see indiscriminately.
[Kuhaha! Yes, this is it! I have obtained the power of a god! No one can ignore me now!]
People screamed as they ran from the monster. The monster laughed, enjoying their terror.
[Yes, be more afraid! Scream! I am a god!]
At that moment, someone descended lightly from the sky.
— “It’s the magical girl!”
— “The magical girl is here!”
— “We’re saved!”
There was no need to explain who that “someone” was. The magical girl. A modern miracle that stood against the monsters. The shining girl who descended to the earth pointed her staff at the monster and spoke.
“I, Magical Girl Reina, will stop you! Surrender peacefully, monster!”
Of course, the monster had no intention of surrendering. Monsters were those who, after falling into deep despair and darkness, sought power, abandoning everything in the process.
[A magical girl, huh? Huh, let’s see what it looks like when the shining star loses and starts crying.]
The monster bulged its body grotesquely and then spat something out.
[Die, magical girl!]
“Tch!”
What the monster spat out was a massive glob of poison. Magical Girl Reina quickly flew into the sky to dodge the poison, and the poison hissed as it melted the road where she had just stood.
“Haaah!”
Reina gripped her staff tightly and shot magic at the monster, but the monster easily blocked it with its tongue and lunged toward Reina.
“Huh?”
The monster, with explosive speed like a frog, collided with Reina before she could react. She was thrown back, slamming into the wall of a building.
“Ugh…!”
Reina tried to pull herself together and stand, but her legs trembled, and she couldn’t get up.
— “What do we do?”
— “The magical girl’s down! It’s over!”
[Kuk, so much for the magical girl or whatever. Alright, let’s see how the magical girl looks when she cries. First, let’s break her arm—]
At the moment the monster’s tongue reached out toward Reina, a clanking sound began to echo from somewhere.
— “What, what’s that?!”
— “Is it another monster?”
People who had been watching the fight between the magical girl and the monster began to murmur. The frog monster turned around, and there stood a knight-like figure clad in jet-black armor.
[Huh? What’s this? Get lost! I’m busy toying with the magical girl.]
[…]
The black knight said nothing, simply staring at the monster. The frog monster, now filled with anger, shouted.
[Are you ignoring me?!]
Poison spewed from the frog’s throat. The monster laughed, sure of its victory… and the massive glob of poison was effortlessly sliced in half by the black knight’s sword.
[Huh?]
[Weak.]
The black knight spoke as if bored. The frog monster hesitated, taking a few steps back in disbelief.
Even the magical girl hadn’t dared to block the attack and had simply dodged it. But this knight had split the poison in half with just a sword? As the frog monster pondered this, it suddenly felt insulted again and began to thrash in a fit of rage.
[Kyaaaah—!]
However, the moment the black knight lightly released their energy, every living thing nearby fell silent.
It was an overwhelming aura, too massive for words. Despite the black knight being no bigger than an ordinary human and far smaller than the 5-meter-tall frog monster, the frog felt as if it were facing an opponent many times larger than itself.
[Th-this can’t be… This doesn’t make sense.]
It’s hopeless. I can’t fight something like this. That thing is a true monster, completely beyond me.
The frog monster’s entire body began to tremble. It was the prey, standing before an immeasurably greater predator. That was the fate of the frog monster. The black knight walked slowly toward it, step by step, and finally said one word.
[Boring.]
[K-kyaaaah—!]
The moment the terrified frog monster tried to lash out with its tongue, its vision split.
Huh? Why does the world look like this?
The frog monster hadn’t even realized its body had been sliced in half. Its corpse, perfectly cleaved, lay sprawled on the road.
As the frog monster turned into a lifeless corpse in an instant, Reina, still collapsed against the wall of the building, watched as the black knight approached her.
‘This is it…’
She knew she was about to die.
That monster possessed incredible magic. Even if another magical girl miraculously appeared to help right now, they wouldn’t stand a chance against that.
The black knight had cut down the monster she had lost to in a single stroke. Even before that, the sheer aura it exuded had made it clear. This was a creature in an entirely different league from her.
Tears welled up in her eyes, but Reina forced them back. Despite how shamefully she had been defeated, she was still a magical girl. She had a duty to inspire courage and hope in people. So, of course, she needed to die with dignity.
Even though she thought that, she couldn’t bear the fear. After all, she was just an ordinary girl who had gained power by chance.
The clanking sound of metal accompanied the black knight as it approached. Death was coming closer.
As the knight stood in front of her, it looked down at Reina for a moment before speaking.
[Not ripe yet. It’s not your time.]
“Huh?”
Before Reina could grasp what that meant, the black knight disappeared in an instant.
“What…?”
People began to gather around the dazed Reina.
— “Magical girl! Are you alright?”
— “What was that monster just now?”
— “There aren’t any more monsters, right?”
As the crowd gathered around her, Reina’s thoughts went blank.
“Ah.”
Her legs were trembling.
***
After I had moved far away from the place where the monster had appeared, I undid my transformation.
Now, a face I had grown quite familiar with appeared: that of a man.
Back in my human body, I unlocked the door with a click and stepped into my studio apartment. Yes, the very room that had been filled with the fumes of a lit charcoal briquette when I first took over this body.
Staying in a place where someone had committed suicide was unsettling, but it wasn’t like I had anywhere else to go.
Taking off my shoes, I sighed and muttered to myself.
“That was a close one.”
Of course, it was. The magical girl I had just encountered, Reina, was the main character of Matseu-An, my favorite manga. How could I not be shocked when the protagonist of a manga I loved so much appeared right before my eyes?
Come to think of it, it was the first time I had ever run into a magical girl. Until now, I had always quietly dealt with monsters out of sight of people.
Now, I finally started to grasp the reality that I had been reincarnated into a magical girl webtoon. Up until now, this world had felt more like a monster-hunting genre.
Fortunately, the monster body I was possessing was incredibly strong. Defeating the monster earlier had confirmed that for me. The frog monster seemed to be ranked at least C-class, but compared to my magical power, it was like a firefly against the sun.
…Whether being a strong monster was a good thing or not, I didn’t know, but at least I didn’t have to worry about getting killed by some random street-level monster.
The real problem lay elsewhere.
It was with the body I had possessed.
You might think that since I have a rare ability to turn into a human, I wouldn’t have to worry about being killed by magical girls, right? Well, no, that’s not it.
Name: Baek Seung-hyun. Age: 25. Traits: orphan, high school dropout, unemployed bum. If there’s any redeeming quality, it’s that the face is decent-looking. In summary, life’s a mess.
Come to think of it, this isn’t much different from my life before entering the webtoon.
My stomach growled. I closed my eyes tightly and cursed.
“Shit…”
What good is being a super-strong monster if I’m still struggling to make ends meet?
Sure, if I transform into a monster, I won’t feel hunger, but I’d rather not. It’s not like I can go around broadcasting to everyone that I’m a monster.
Trying to distract myself from my empty stomach, I turned my attention elsewhere. Come to think of it, the incident in front of all those people earlier must be in the news by now.
I opened the news tab on my phone, and sure enough, the headlines were completely different from the ones I used to see in my world.
[Breaking News: French magical girl ‘Rose Knight’ recognized as S-rank… The 9th magical girl in the world]
[Bing Seol-hwa defeats A-rank monster ‘Fire Bear’]
[Poor performance at the Magical Girl Olympics – Is it the fans’ fault?]
Among all kinds of articles, the event that had just taken place was quickly filling the news feed.
[Breaking) Monster appears in downtown Seoul… Magical power estimated at A-rank or higher]
It seemed like peaceful days were gone for good.
