Chapter 15
After dealing with the sudden onslaught of monsters, Hong-ryeon glanced at Reina.
‘Hmph…’
Wasn’t she a C-rank magical girl? It seemed she hadn’t been one for long either. But oddly enough, she fought quite well.
When she hid behind her manager, I thought she was an undeniable burden, but she might actually be somewhat useful.
‘Well, she’s not too bad.’
After briefly evaluating the rookie, Hong-ryeon turned her gaze towards Atillary and said,
“Looks like we’ve almost handled everything. I’ll take a few people and scout around the area.”
“Ah, got it, ma’am. Things were always tough, but today feels even more brutal. It seems like things have been gradually getting harder lately… Maybe we should ask the KMPA for more support, don’t you think?”
“That’s your department to handle. As for the scouting team… Let’s throw in the rookie as well.”
“Are you crazy?”
Atillary frowned as she spoke.
“This rookie just got here and immediately faced a monster attack. Her mental and physical states are probably in tatters, and you want to take her with you? Do you even have a heart?”
“Hey, no—”
“You’re not making her go just because the rookie’s manager chewed you out earlier, are you?”
Hong-ryeon shook her head in annoyance.
“It’s not like that, okay? How petty do you think I am?”
“You’re the pettiest person I’ve ever met,” Atillary muttered.
“Hey, you little—! No, forget it. That’s not what I meant. I just found it interesting because the rookie fought better than I expected.”
“Fought better? Does a magical girl like that even exist? Weren’t you just as out of it when you first came here? The only magical girl who adapted perfectly from day one is probably Bing Seol Hwa.”
At the mention of Bing Seol Hwa, Hong-ryeon silently stared at Atillary. The mood instantly turned icy. Realizing her mistake, Atillary quickly raised both hands in surrender.
“Alright, alright. I won’t mention Bing Seol Hwa anymore.”
“She left before you even got here. And I heard her magic power was at an A-rank level from the start, so only an idiot wouldn’t have been able to handle that.”
“I know you hate Bing Seol Hwa, so I’ll drop it. But still, what did the rookie do that impressed you?”
“Uh, well… It’s not like she has some rare or extraordinary magic. It’s just standard firepower magic for vision enhancement. But she knows how to use it really well. She seems to have a clear sense of what needs to be done, almost like she’s got a broad field of vision.”
“Really? Wow, most of the girls who deal with monsters from the rear usually freeze up when the fighting gets this intense. That’s impressive.”
“That’s why I want to bring her along. We’re scouting, and having someone with a wide field of vision is useful. Plus, she looks promising. Honestly, if we train her well, she could turn out to be quite capable.”
“So, she’s Hong-ryeon’s chosen promising magical girl, huh? Poor rookie. Getting noticed by you is probably the start of a long, painful road.”
“What do you take me for!?”
“For the instructor who drives every magical girl you like through brutal Spartan training. But hey… if you think she’s got potential, why don’t you go a bit easier on her and make sure she sticks around?”
“That’s my business.”
With that, the conversation ended, and Hong-ryeon immediately gathered Reina and a few other magical girls to head out on the scouting mission.
Not long after, they encountered the Black Knight.
…
“What should I do?” That was the only thought running through Reina’s mind.
Why was the Black Knight here, a monster that should have been in South Korea?
Even Bing Seol Hwa couldn’t stop this monster. And now, after having already exhausted her magic power in fighting off the previous monster, could she possibly face this one in her current state?
The only bit of relief was that the Black Knight wasn’t typically aggressive toward humans.
In fact, there were even reports of the Black Knight hunting other monsters when they flooded in large numbers. If they didn’t provoke him, maybe they could avoid danger.
As Reina pondered this, Hong-ryeon spoke up.
“That monster came from the rear, right? You seem to know who it is. What’s its deal?”
“That’s the Black Knight, an A-rank monster… It’s best not to provoke him.”
At that, Hong-ryeon’s face twisted in irritation.
“What the hell are you talking about?”
Reina knew too. It was absurd for a magical girl to simply let a monster go when it was right in front of them.
But what could she do? This was no ordinary monster.
“He’s classified as A-rank, but… he’s incredibly strong. Way stronger than any normal A-rank monster. Even Bing Seol Hwa couldn’t defeat him…”
“Bing Seol Hwa?”
Hong-ryeon’s voice turned cold. Reina looked into her eyes, seeing something dark and obsessive lurking within them.
“This is great, then. It’s an opportunity to take down the monster Bing Seol Hwa couldn’t beat, right?”
“No, don’t! He’s at least somewhat peaceful. For now, we should—”
“Just let a monster go when it’s right in front of us? Wow, rookie, I sensed it earlier, but you sure are scared, aren’t you?”
Hong-ryeon, having said that, charged straight at the Black Knight.
“No! The Black Knight is a real monster!” Reina’s voice no longer reached Hong-ryeon. Engulfed in flames, she rushed toward the Black Knight…
And in an instant, she was slammed into the ground.
Boom! The deafening sound tore through the air. The Black Knight had grabbed Hong-ryeon and smashed her into the ground. Watching this, Reina bit her lip.
“Ugh… cough…”
Hong-ryeon gasped for breath, clearly in pain. Even though she had been protecting her body with magic, the impact momentarily knocked the wind out of her. As she struggled to recover, the Black Knight grabbed her by the throat and lifted her up effortlessly.
— [You’re quite resilient. I intended to knock you out in one blow.]
The Black Knight’s words were sincere. Of all the opponents he had faced, only Bing Seol Hwa had withstood such an attack. Hong-ryeon was one of the few who had approached that level of strength.
However, to Hong-ryeon, those words were nothing but mockery.
“You… bastard!”
Boom!
In a sudden explosion of flames, Hong-ryeon freed herself from the Black Knight’s grasp. The Black Knight casually dusted off his hands, showing little reaction.
“A monster like you, where do you get off?!”
Fwoosh!
A blazing flame, burning at thousands of degrees, surged toward the Black Knight. As he watched the firestorm approaching, the Black Knight let out a small chuckle.
— [Ha.]
The Black Knight made no effort to avoid the flames. If he had wanted to dodge, he could have done so easily, but instead, he charged straight through the fire and kicked Hong-ryeon, who was floating in the air.
“Gah…!”
Once again, the magical girl came crashing down. After lightly landing on the ground with a thud, the Black Knight spoke mockingly.
— [You dare act out when you’re not even worthy prey.]
Hong-ryeon glared at the Black Knight with murderous intent. But the Black Knight didn’t care and turned his attention to Reina, who was watching the fight from above with a pale expression.
— [I didn’t come here to fight you today. I could entertain you if you wish, but I don’t see the point. Soon, the monsters’ invasion will become even fiercer, so you should focus on finding a way to deal with that.]
At those words, Reina muttered, “What?” That implied the Black Knight knew something. No, perhaps the Black Knight had come here to orchestrate the monster invasion himself.
“Stop right there!” Hong-ryeon shouted at the Black Knight, but he shook his head as if he no longer found her worth his time, and in the blink of an eye, he vanished.
The magical girls who had been standing there were frozen, unable to move, completely stunned by the shocking scene.
***
Back at the dorm, I immediately began cleaning the place and preparing to welcome Su-hui. The furniture hadn’t arrived yet, but I wanted to make her feel as comfortable as possible. After all, right now, I was Su-hui’s manager.
Several hours later, Su-hui finally returned to the dorm, dragging her feet. It was already past midnight.
“You’re late,” I said, greeting her. Su-hui nodded sadly.
“Yes. On the very first day, there was a monster attack, and we went on reconnaissance… then we ran into the Black Knight. Hong-ryeon got beaten up by him, and we spent hours talking about it.”
…It seemed that part of the reason Su-hui had come back so late was, in fact, my fault.
“The Black Knight?” I asked, pretending not to know. Su-hui nodded again.
“Yeah. I have no idea why he suddenly showed up here. There weren’t even any alerts about someone crossing the border… Hong-ryeon was so furious she was grinding her teeth.”
At her words, I said nothing.
Things were getting really troublesome. What should I do now?
