The sound of a siren suddenly filled the sky. I squinted my eyes and began to survey the situation.
What I saw was a giant slime-shaped monster.
Damn it, I went out to relax, and suddenly something like that appears.
Should I be thankful that only this one creature appeared and that there wasn’t a massive wave of monsters near the border?
As I was having these complicated thoughts in my head, I heard a snicker next to me.
“Hey, just stay still over there.”
“Excuse me?”
What the hell is this nonsense? Usually, when it comes to magical girls, they would tell you to run away while they hold the line, right? But now she wants me to stay still?
“Just stay right there. Don’t even think about running away.”
“What do you mean by that?”
Is there something else? This is strange. Other than that slime monster, I can’t sense any magic nearby.
However, as if to lightly surpass my expectations, Hong-ryeon spoke with a voice mixed with laughter.
“I’ll take care of it, so just stay put.”
Only then did I realize why the girl in front of me was saying such things. It wasn’t for safety… she just wanted me to stay still so she could show off?
“What the…?”
I was about to say, “That’s nonsense,” but Hong-ryeon transformed in an instant and flew toward the monster.
And then, a massive whirlwind of red flames emerged.
“Wow.”
Even I couldn’t help but admire that sight. So that’s why she’s called ‘Hong-ryeon.’ The huge vortex of flames surrounded the slime monster and gradually closed in, preventing it from moving.
“Okay, it’s done~”
With Hong-ryeon’s playful voice, the slime monster had seemingly evaporated, as if it had never existed.
Landing gracefully from the sky, she tilted her head back and let out a huff, pleased with herself. I thought about teasing her for a moment but held back and said instead:
“That was impressive. I’ve seen a lot of videos, but it’s really amazing in person.”
Upon hearing what I wanted to say, her lips curled into a grin, and I couldn’t help but smile back at her.
“See, right?! Now you understand just how amazing I am.”
With her chest puffed out and hands on her hips, she seemed to revel in her own self-praise.
“Well, I already knew you were impressive. But hearing you say it yourself kind of ruins the vibe.”
“What?! This is….”
But really, after such a performance, bragging about it makes you look kind of pathetic…
Before Hong-ryeon, who had already undone her transformation, could growl at me again, a magical girl landed softly from the sky.
“Magical Girl Reina has arrived… Oh? The monster has already been taken care of?”
What’s going on? Why is Reina here?
Just as I was about to speak in surprise, Hong-ryeon interjected.
“Oh, I took care of it, newbie. I happened to be wandering around the marketplace.”
“W-Wait, Hong-ryeon?! …Oh? Seung-hyun, why are you here…?”
“That’s because he dragged me along!”
At that, Reina narrowed her eyes, demanding an explanation with her gaze.
“Why is my manager with another magical girl at the market?”
Hold on, why am I being dragged into this? I swear I did nothing wrong!
“No, Su-hui fell asleep because of yesterday’s events and didn’t wake up even after noon, so I was just going to come alone when I happened to see someone who looked like they had nothing to do, so I dragged them along.”
At that, Reina’s face flushed red. Sleeping past noon could be considered a talent in some sense.
“Ah, no, I…!”
“Hey, who are you calling someone with nothing to do?!”
However, there was someone even more triggered by my words than Reina—Hong-ryeon.
“So, what you’re saying is that someone who crawled out in a tracksuit and slippers from the lodging has something to do? If they had something to do in that state, wouldn’t the youth unemployment rate be zero percent?”
“Ugh…!”
Once again, Hong-ryeon was silenced by the implication that she had something to do because of her outfit. As we both stood there, Reina let out a sigh and transformed back.
“…Let’s go back to the lodging and talk. There’s a lot of furniture to arrange, so let’s not draw unnecessary attention.”
Ah, come to think of it, we were in the middle of a market.
Hong-ryeon and I realized this fact late and started heading back to the lodging obediently.
…
After returning to the lodging, I sighed. I had to arrange furniture in what was previously a wasteland of a house. It looked like there was more piled up than I expected, and I glanced at Su-hui.
“How did this happen, Su-hui?”
“Um… I heard that the accommodations provided to magical girls in North Korea are spacious, so since I was already renovating, I thought I’d decorate it according to my taste…”
Damn, I was the one who had to handle all this furniture arrangement. I reluctantly started moving.
“…But why am I here?”
Hong-ryeon said with a blank expression. Su-hui responded.
“You should explain why you were in the market alone with my manager.”
“Why should I explain that… And what am I supposed to do in a place where the furniture isn’t even arranged?”
Su-hui seemed at a loss for words as well, only scratching her cheek with a chuckle.
“Just wait a moment. I’ll finish arranging the furniture quickly…”
“Forget it, I’ll help you too. I don’t have anything to do anyway… Ugh.”
Why was she glaring at me when she said she had nothing to do? Damn it, did I tease her too much about her tracksuit?
“Uh… Are you going to help with magic?”
I couldn’t resist asking out of curiosity. At that, Hong-ryeon looked at me as if I was crazy.
“What kind of nonsense is that? Who transforms to move furniture?”
“No, I’ve heard of some magical girls who transform to fly when there’s an urgent matter.”
“Wha—what?”
She made a face as if she had never even imagined that.
“Do magical girls have any sense? Using magic in everyday life like that? What will they do when they run out of magic while fighting monsters? Those crazy girls should all be beaten up until they wake up to reality. Hey, newbie, you’re not one of those, are you?”
“No, no, no!”
As Hong-ryeon glared at her, Su-hui shook her head vigorously, waving her hands. I let out a laugh.
“I know you’re not saying you’re going to help with magic… So how are you going to help then?”
“Just use your hands and feet. Brace yourselves; I’m a high-level talent compared to you guys! It’s not the time to leisurely move furniture around… tsk, fine. We should start quickly so that I can ask whatever I need to.”
With an unexpected person thrown into the mix, Su-hui and I began moving the furniture.
As we moved the furniture, I soon realized one thing.
“Damn… why is this so heavy? Ugh, ugh.”
Hong-ryeon has no stamina.
She doesn’t live up to the name of an A-rank magical girl—no, forget that. Her overall stamina is just horrendous.
“…Just take a break. I’ll handle the rest.”
“No, I’ll do it. Ugh, I’m going to do it.”
Yet she’s stubborn as hell, refusing to listen at all. Hmm, at this rate, is her presence helping, or is it hindering me?
Anyway, after we roughly arranged the furniture, Hong-ryeon, who had been resting on the sofa, spoke up.
“I just thought of something; what kind of courtesy is it to suddenly bring someone here and make them move furniture?”
“You said you’d help.”
“In South Korea, aren’t you supposed to refuse such offers? What is this, the country of courtesy….”
“Yes, yes.”
I casually brushed off Hong-ryeon’s words. Her personality has a certain simplicity to it, so I could read her thoughts to some extent.
Right now… she’s probably feeling embarrassed about her terrible stamina.
“Please taste this.”
I said to Hong-ryeon as I boiled some soybean paste stew. If I give her something to eat, maybe she’ll keep quiet.
“Oh, what? Are you asking me to stay for dinner? No thanks. I never planned to stay in the first place, but here I am…”
“It wouldn’t be right to chase you away after you came all this way. Please have dinner with us.”
As I offered her a taste of the soybean paste stew, Hong-ryeon, smacking her lips, said, “Hey, give me another bite. Did you put something like seasoning in this?”
“I didn’t put anything like that in.”
In any case, after showing her the taste, Hong-ryeon pondered for a moment before exclaiming, “Ugh, fine,” and then called her manager.
“Hey, manager, I’m eating dinner out today. It’s nothing special, just some work. Since it’s right next door, you don’t have to wait for me, just eat alone.”
Seeing that, I couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Why are you splitting up like that?”
…Can’t even make a sound of laughter.
