Chapter 40
Bing Seol Hwa opened her eyes wide, staring at the Black Knight. The Unicorn, caught off guard by the sudden situation, blinked for a moment and then swung a foreleg toward the Black Knight.
“Watch out…!”
Bing Seol Hwa shouted. And then, swish, the Unicorn’s foreleg disappeared.
[Wha-what?]
The Unicorn stared blankly at where its foreleg had been, then quickly regenerated it.
The Black Knight watched the Unicorn silently. Despite the obvious size difference between the human-sized Black Knight and the nearly 5-meter-tall Unicorn, strangely, it was the Unicorn that was stepping back.
[W-what are you? Black Knight, how do you have this kind of power…!]
It couldn’t understand. How could such a powerful monster exist? Of course, it knew that the Black Knight was an S-rank monster. But it had never imagined that the gap in strength would be this wide.
Would the chance of victory even be ten percent? It wasn’t confident. At the very least, it wasn’t a fight it could continue right after dealing with Bing Seol Hwa.
[D-damn it.]
The Unicorn vanished in an instant with teleportation. The Black Knight watched it disappear and then turned back to Bing Seol Hwa.
Bing Seol Hwa, gasping for breath, observed the Black Knight. As the tense silence stretched on, it was the Black Knight who spoke first.
[Do you have a death wish or something? I never imagined the so-called strongest magical girl of Korea would be so eager to die.]
“What…!”
Bing Seol Hwa opened her mouth but then closed it again. The Black Knight took a step closer, with a clicking sound.
[Isn’t that right? Whether it was with me or with that guy just now. Do you want to die at the hands of a monster? If so, I’ll be happy to oblige.]
“Don’t be ridiculous…”
[Don’t be ridiculous, you say. But aren’t you the one making a joke of yourself?]
Bing Seol Hwa fell silent. She couldn’t deny it. After all, she knew better than anyone just how pitiful she looked right now.
She had been willing to sacrifice herself to take down the monster, but in the end, it was the Black Knight who saved her life, leaving her as nothing more than a laughable figure who had been helped by a monster. She couldn’t deny that it was laughable indeed.
She stood in silence, glaring at the Black Knight.
[Your glare is truly terrifying. Don’t waste your energy. At least for now, I have no intention of being hostile toward the magical girls.]
Then, Bing Seol Hwa said something unexpected.
“Is it because of Reina?”
[What?]
“I know you’re fixated on that magical girl. Why are you so obsessed with her? You mentioned before that she would become stronger than me.”
The Black Knight nodded without hesitation.
[That’s right. She will.]
“In that case… are you planning to kill Reina once she’s grown stronger so you can use her as a stepping stone for your own growth?”
The Black Knight remained silent.
“Breaking through the wall of S-rank means it becomes exponentially harder to grow. Especially for monsters stronger than me… like you. So, are you planning to nurture Reina into a powerful magical girl and then use her to further your own strength?”
Bing Seol Hwa continued to glare at the Black Knight. The Black Knight merely shrugged.
[Think what you like. It doesn’t matter to me.]
It wasn’t the clear answer she had hoped for. Bing Seol Hwa furrowed her brows. The Black Knight clicked its tongue and spoke.
[The important thing is that, for now, I’m not opposed to the magical girls. Isn’t that what matters?]
“…”
[At this rate, you’re going to die. I don’t care about your life, but it would be inconvenient if you died right now. If you must die, do it much later, somewhere out of my sight.]
“I never thought you’d be concerned about where I die.”
[Well, if you’re truly determined to end your life, I won’t stop you.]
Regret, huh.
Bing Seol Hwa thought for a moment. Regret… yes, she had regrets. They overflowed from her heart.
…Could it be that the Black Knight saw right through her, knew just how much she was clinging to her feelings for him?
Whoosh, the Black Knight’s figure vanished. Bing Seol Hwa stood still in place, gripping her staff tightly before soaring into the sky.
The streets of Busan were in complete disarray. Numerous monster armies moved as if they were one body, engaging in combat with the magical girls. The problem was that these monsters were working together, moving like an actual army.
The magical girls couldn’t help but be taken aback by the situation, which was entirely different from before. It wasn’t like the frontline in North Korea, where monsters didn’t cooperate. Here, facing monsters who coordinated their attacks left them uncertain and more prone to confusion.
Amidst this chaos, the one magical girl who held her ground the best was, after all, her.
A massive torrent swept over the monsters, a wave of magic that resembled the sea itself. This was none other than Ha-eun, the A-rank magical girl and guardian deity of Busan.
Ha-eun charged at the enemies, the sound of crashing waves echoing as she became a wave herself, sweeping through the monsters and disrupting their formation, causing damage.
[Ugh, it’s Ha-eun! Take down Ha-eun first!]
[Maintain formation! Focus on the A-rank magical girl first!]
However, being on the front lines meant she was the first target. As a monster fired a magical blast at her, a starlike light intercepted the attack.
Without losing momentum, Ha-eun continued to sweep through the monsters and turned her head to see who had blocked the attack.
It was the magical girl Reina. Recently the most talked-about B-rank magical girl. Seeing this, Ha-eun let out a small laugh. No doubt, in this battlefield, the one contributing the most after herself was likely this Reina.
Reina approached Ha-eun and spoke.
“If you push too far forward, it might get dangerous, so please be careful.”
In response, Ha-eun replied in a cheerful voice.
“Don’t worry. I won’t die to these mere monsters. The only thing that could kill me is our damn baseball team that came in last place again this year.”
Ha-eun had a habit of speaking in standard Korean but slipping into her dialect when her emotions flared up. She ascended into the sky, assessing the situation on the battlefield.
“It looks like they’re struggling over there; I need to get there quickly. If one area breaks, we’ll be overwhelmed.”
“Ah, yes!”
Reina swiftly headed toward the area being pushed back. Watching her, Ha-eun felt a tinge of regret. It would have been nice if Reina could have worked with them at Mirinae.
But then again, considering she seemed close with her personal manager, that made sense. Clearing her mind of unnecessary thoughts, Ha-eun spoke to Reina.
“Watch closely. I’ll sweep them away in no time.”
“Uh, it might be dangerous…”
“What are you saying? I already told you, the only thing that could harm me is the lousy performance of that last-place Lotte team. I won’t even get a scratch otherwise.”
Crash!
Once again, a tidal wave swept through the monsters. Reina, from above, unleashed starlight, erasing the monsters without a trace. Slowly, they managed to defend against the onslaught.
Of course, some magical girls were getting injured here and there, but there was no other choice. It was literally a war.
Then, at that moment, the monsters suddenly began to vanish.
“What the heck is that?”
Ha-eun, momentarily flustered, quickly summoned another wave to sweep over the retreating monsters.
She couldn’t prevent their escape, but she could at least reduce their numbers a little. However, despite the attack, the number of monsters didn’t decrease significantly.
The battle ended. Before long, the monsters that had invaded Busan had vanished without a trace. Ha-eun let out a deep sigh and began speaking in standard Korean again.
“It looks like it’s over. Disband the barriers and assess the situation with the injured. The magical girls came from Seoul, and if they get hurt, they might blame us for it.”
It wasn’t a satisfying outcome. Ha-eun licked her dry lips. Reina, noticing this, spoke to her.
“Um, Bing Seol Hwa is flying over.”
“Ah, she’s here? We managed to hold them off somehow, but the situation isn’t great. It seems like there were some A-rank and B-rank monsters mixed in.”
Bing Seol Hwa nodded at their words and responded.
“Yes. At least, I found out who’s behind all this. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to defeat or capture them.”
Ha-eun blurted out unintentionally.
“Wait, that’s really…”
It felt like a wave of bewilderment swept through the air.
