I Became an Archangel in a Fantasy Chapter 17

Chapter 17

Roth, who had accepted a god, exuded a terrifying presence as he gripped a massive axe forged from concentrated golden magic. His body, wrapped in red, bursting muscles and wreathed in yellow flames, appeared like a demon manifested from the depths of hell.

Yet, despite the overwhelming sight, Boris and the other warriors did not retreat but prepared to launch an attack against him. They had come too far, especially after receiving Seraphim’s blessing, to withdraw now.

At that moment:

“I’ll handle him. The rest of you, fall back!”

“C-Captain?”

“That one is strong! If you attack recklessly, you’ll just increase casualties! You focus on the others around us!”

“A-all right!”

“Yes!”

The warriors immediately engaged the surrounding enemies who had begun to converge, likely drawn by the commotion. They fought to ensure that Eva would not be hindered in her battle.

Meanwhile:

‘A god’s descent… This won’t be easy,’ Eva thought as she covered herself in divine power and charged forward without hesitation.

“Haah!”

-“Grrroooaahh!!!”

-BOOM!

The impact of their weapons clashing was nothing short of colossal. Even though Eva had deflected the blow, her arm throbbed with the force as if it might tear away. She grimaced.

The so-called “Divine Descent” meant literally hosting a god within one’s body. While she doubted Roth had fully absorbed the power of the Baal, even a fragment of that divine power was far beyond what Eva, empowered as she was, could withstand easily.

-“KRAAAAHHH!!!”

“!! W-wait, my lord! ”

“P-please calm yourself! We… we’re on the same side… gaaaaah!!!”

Roth unleashed a bestial roar and launched another flurry of devastating attacks, spewing yellow flames that incinerated his own soldiers as he relentlessly pressed on toward Eva.

“Ugh!”

Eva gathered the full extent of the Seraphim’s blessing to defend herself. Yet, despite possessing divine favor, no mere human could hope to stand against the embodiment of a god.

-BOOM!

“Guhhh!”

Eva was ultimately sent tumbling to the ground by one of Roth’s blows. Though she had managed to shield herself enough to avoid a fatal injury, her body was battered and torn. Meanwhile, Roth remained unscathed, a grim testament to the one-sided nature of their struggle.

“You’ve lasted well enough, but this is the end! Kneel now, and submit to the power of the almighty god!”

“…”

Roth’s voice rang out, brimming with bloodlust. At that moment:

“!”

“C-Captain…?”

Eva dropped to her knees, just as Roth demanded. Despair swept over the faces of the warriors who watched, while a gleeful grin spread across Roth’s face.

But they didn’t know.

Eva’s gaze wasn’t focused on Roth in front of her.

-“Kahaha! You’re not completely stupid after all! Fine, I’ll be generous and make you my personal slave…”

Her eyes were fixed on something far above, watching her from the sky.

A giant, crimson eye.

-“Seraphim, hear my plea! Save us!”

“!?”

In that instant, Eva’s voice rang out, filled with divine power. It was brief, but the force of her cry caused even the godly aura surrounding Roth to waver.

For a moment, the chaotic battlefield fell silent.

And then, in that profound silence, a voice began to resonate in the ears of everyone present.

Soft and faint, yet sharp and piercing as if it could cut through their very souls.

[Understood.]

Eva suddenly called upon Seraphim. At the same time, an ominous voice echoed through the air. Though Roth was somewhat taken aback by it, he wasn’t exactly frightened.

“Hmph! A mere false god of heresy! It’s nothing but a scarecrow before the might of the God Baal that empowers me!” Roth thought.

His body, brimming with immense power, made him feel invincible. Even Eva Gellion, the mighty Holy Knight, could barely stand before him. The strength surging through his body was overwhelming, providing a sense of exhilaration and omnipotence he’d never felt before. For Roth, who had always struggled with his heavyset frame, this newfound lightness and overwhelming power felt all the more intoxicating.

“Hahaha! A god? Seraphim? Let it come! I now carry the divine power of Baal! I’ll tear you apart in one strike!” Roth shouted, his voice booming with confidence.

Then, suddenly—

Flash!

“!!”

A massive pillar of light erupted between him and Eva. Instantly, Roth felt his entire body shudder with a sense of impending doom. It was as if a colossal force was pressing down on him, rendering his earlier bravado insignificant. Overcome with an overwhelming sense of intimidation, Roth took an involuntary step back.

And then—

“Gulp…”

Without realizing it, Roth swallowed hard. His eyes began to see something terrifying.

A massive figure, its sheer size dwarfing him, loomed before Roth. And from that figure, countless red eyes stared directly at him.

[…] ‘What… what is this? What kind of monster… How can this be a god?’

The sensation was terrifying, as if something was clawing at his very soul. A chilling feeling crept over him, far beyond discomfort. The sight made him sick to his stomach, and a deep-seated terror took root in his mind.

It was a force he could never hope to resist—a presence he should never dare to defy. The grotesque and otherworldly nature of it filled Roth with an uncanny sense of dread, paralyzing his body.

But—

“Damn it!”

Despite the crushing fear, Roth gripped his axe tightly. His instinctual revulsion toward this being made him freeze in place, but he knew he couldn’t back down now. To yield to this false god meant everything would be lost. The allied forces would crumble, and the Baal Church that had supported him would abandon him entirely. His carefully crafted ambitions would be ruined in an instant.

That could never happen.

Roth had sacrificed too much. He had poured endless resources and time into reaching this moment. To allow it all to slip away without even putting up a fight was unthinkable.

Even if the opponent was a god.

‘Yes, it’s do or die now! I’ll kill that filthy dark god right here! I can do this! I carry the power of the almighty Baal!’

Driven by the unquenchable flames of his ambition and the divine power coursing through his veins, Roth found the courage to push through his terror. Though his body was still stiff with fear, he raised his axe once more, ready to face the entity before him.

“Finally, you’ve appeared, you filthy false god! How convenient!”
Roth’s axe was wrapped in a brilliant golden flame.

A twisted smile spread across his face as he prepared to deliver a blow with all his might.
Even he, who was ignorant in many ways, instinctively sensed that this wouldn’t be easy with brute force alone.
For that reason, he had to end it in a single strike.

Now, as it showed a brief moment of carelessness…
If he could strike that eye with a perfect blow, victory would be his.

“Prepare yourself, filthy wretch of a god! In the name of Baal, I shall punish you! Haaaahhh!”
With a roar, Roth charged forward, moving faster than he ever had in his life.

It was done.
This was the end.

This strength.
This speed.
There was no way a mere creature, no matter how powerful, could withstand this blow, imbued as it was with Baal’s divine might…

[-200. Pathetic.]

“?”
It said something incomprehensible for a moment.

As a question briefly flashed across Roth’s mind,
“…What?”

-Boom!!!

“!!?”
An overwhelming pressure struck suddenly.

A horrific, crushing sensation, as though a gigantic hand was squeezing his entire body, caused Roth to be violently driven deep into the ground.

“Wha… What… is this? What in the world… Kuhh!!”

-Thud!!

“Grr… You… you think this pathetic attack… can stop… Kuhyahhh!!!”

-Crack!!!

“Guaahhh!!!”
Roth twisted his body, desperately trying to rise.

However, despite his efforts, the crushing pressure only intensified, becoming crueler and more unbearable.

“Aarghhhh!! S-stop… Kuhhhh!!”

Bones were shattered.
Muscles were ground to pulp.
Organs burst from the overwhelming force.

Roth’s mouth released horrific screams amidst the excruciating pain he had never experienced before.
The confidence and bravado he displayed just moments earlier had vanished without a trace.

The sheer agony caused by the Seraphim’s gaze alone quickly turned the once arrogant Roth into a figure of pitiful humility.

“S-s-spare me… Guhhhh!!! Spare… me! I… I was wrong! Please… Please forgive me!!! Gyaahhh!!!”

Tears, snot, blood, and saliva mixed as Roth babbled his desperate apologies.
Though his faith had never been strong, at this moment, he was utterly sincere in his pleas for mercy.

Roth slammed his battered body against the ground, expressing a genuine repentance that not even the god Baal had ever witnessed from him.
Had he been an ordinary human, he would have died long ago from the extreme pain and overwhelming submission.

However,
Even as he became more and more humbled by the unbearable suffering,
Roth didn’t die.

No, it’s that he couldn’t die.

Despite his body being reduced to mush,
The “thing” residing within him did not allow him to die yet.

That “thing” still had more to see.
There was something left to witness through this fool’s eyes.

={This… is the Seraphim…}=
