Chapter 37
“No.”
“Ugh!…”
Patra firmly opposed Mok‘s words about going to free his people. Mok flinched at her response.
He had somewhat expected this reaction, but he hadn’t anticipated such a blunt refusal.
“Bu… but sister. Didn’t I tell you? Seraphim Himself gave me a Revelation…”
Sigh…
With a heavy sigh, Patra responded to Mok’s words. She continued in a calm voice.
“Mok, I know you truly follow this God Seraphim. From what I’ve heard, it seems like His teachings are quite reasonable. But this is a completely separate matter. Freeing the Orcs… do you really think that’s something you can accomplish?”
It wasn’t meant as mockery or criticism.
It wasn’t because she had any lingering attachment to the homeland that had tried to kill both her and her brother.
It was the result of a completely rational judgment, and more than that, it was filled with genuine concern.
“Many Orcs before you have tried to do something similar to what you’re talking about. In the end, they all failed and lost their heads. And you know why… don’t you?”
“… The mind-control magic, right?”
“Exactly. No matter how physically strong the Orcs are, no matter how great a leader guides them… in the face of mind-control magic, even the bravest warriors turn into frightened children in an instant. Even you can’t completely escape its influence.”
Mok, who could wield some magic due to his innate talent, was still an Orc. Even he could not fully resist the mind-control magic that was the Orcs’ greatest weakness, losing the will to resist under its effects.
Being Mok, he could at least maintain some clarity and swing his weapon during the confusion, but no further.
He couldn’t avoid becoming too weak to fight normally.
Patra continued her calm persuasion, offering clear reasons.
“Of course, I understand your frustration. You lost everything—your position, your dreams—and had to flee overnight. But…”
She looked at Mok as she spoke.
Mok could easily discern the emotions reflected in her face.
Desperation.
And, vulnerability.
These were feelings rarely, if ever, seen on the usually strong Patra.
“But… no matter how hard things are, please don’t do something reckless. This is the only request I have as your sister. Please, just live together with me, like we are now. That would be enough for me.”
“Sister…”
Patra, once a princess and the sister of the emperor, had held a noble status.
Yet, for the sake of protecting her ‘brother,’ Mok, she had given up everything and come to this place.
She had abandoned her position as a princess.
She had left behind the comfortable life that came with it.
Her once porcelain skin had turned a tanned brown from the sun, and her once delicate hands had grown rough from tending sheep, shearing wool, and butchering animals.
Even through the hardships of this life, Patra had always remained resolute and strong.
But now, seeing this emotional turmoil on her face, Mok could not ignore it, no matter how much he had longed for this opportunity, even if it was the will of the gods.
It was enough to make Mok hesitate greatly.
However.
“…Then let’s do this, sister.”
“Do what?”
As Patra questioned with curiosity, Mok gripped his staff firmly and spoke in a serious tone.
“If you fight me and win, I’ll give up cleanly. But if I win, please allow me to go. Let me move forward to save my people.”
“…”
Patra stared at Mok with a blank expression for a moment.
But soon, she smiled and lifted her staff.
“I won’t go easy on you.”
“…”
With just those few words, Mok felt a deep tension rise within him.
Watching her brother’s expression, Patra slowly began to move.
A nearly 3-meter-tall Orc male and a human woman standing at only 160cm.
The length of their staffs alone differed by almost double, and their physiques were so mismatched it seemed absurd to compare them.
However, in this moment, Mok knew.
If it came down to a normal contest, he would surely lose.
He had never beaten his sister even once…
Whoooosh.
“…Gulp.”
As Patra’s blazing mana began to surge,
And then…
Pop!
“Ugh!”
Bang!!!
The staff swung at incredible speed.
The impact felt as if a massive explosion spell had been cast, and Mok felt a brief, numbing sensation.
Though she was now following her brother, tending sheep,
Patra, the former princess of the Baro Empire, had once been its most powerful warrior.
A princess-knight who swept through enemies single-handedly on the battlefield.
Even now, few in the Baro Empire could defeat her in a 1:1 duel.
Which meant that Mok could be beaten senseless, like a dog in the middle of a hot summer day, then strung up like laundry to dry.
However…
Bang!!!
“…Huh?”
“…”
But this time, Mok was no longer in his normal state.
A golden aura enveloped his entire body.
Divine Power.
A power granted to him since the moment he declared his obedience to Seraphim.
Now covered in this power, Mok could feel it.
His strength had doubled…
‘I can win… even against my sister!’
“Ugh!”
Crash!
Despite the fleeting confusion, the battle continued relentlessly.
The intense duel, so fierce it was hard to believe they were fighting with mere wooden staffs, finally came to a conclusion…
“…Ugh!”
“Gasp… gasp… This… this is my victory, sister.”
Mok, breathing heavily, pointed his staff at Patra.
“…Ha. Fine… a promise is… a promise…”
“Ah!”
With a sigh, Patra granted her reluctant approval.
And with that, joy began to blossom clearly on Mok’s face.
However, in that very moment, as Patra looked at her brother, a complex emotion flickered across her face.
The unexpected defeat at the hands of her younger brother.
It seemed that Mok truly did receive a revelation from Seraphim, as he was now wielding a much stronger power, entirely different from before.
Even though it was an extremely close defeat, a loss was still a loss.
As his sister, who had always protected this child, Patra felt a sense of joy, but at the same time, the realization that she now had to let him go—according to their promise—caused a deep worry to settle in her heart.
This meant that protecting her brother would become much harder than ever before.
However… apart from these concerns, Patra couldn’t help but inwardly acknowledge something.
The ‘potential’ that her brother had.
‘It didn’t work… the mind-control magic had no effect at all…’
Patra had tried to use mind-control magic, aiming to restrain Mok as part of fighting him with all her strength.
However, this magic, which was fatal to Orcs, had no effect on Mok in his current state.
The golden Divine Power enveloping his body had protected him from it.
The fact that the most decisive factor in crushing Orc rebellions had been neutralized made Patra think, ‘Could this really be happening?’
‘Of course, just that alone isn’t enough to bring down the Baro Empire… or our brother.’
While it was true that there was a small possibility,
No one could yet say for certain whether this endeavour would succeed or fail.
However, regardless of the outcome, there was only one thing she had to do.
As she reminded herself of this fact once more, Patra clenched the broken staff from the earlier duel tightly in her hand.
‘I will protect him… my brother… with these hands, no matter what…’
***
“What? A strange religion is spreading among the Orcs?”
In the imperial palace of the Baro Empire,
Ramset XIV, the current emperor, frowned slightly at the report given by his subordinates.
“Yes, Your Majesty. They say it’s a god called Saraph or Seraph or something like that, but it seems to be gaining quite a lot of momentum in various ways.”
“Seraph… isn’t that the god? The heretical God Seraphim, who has been gaining influence in the neighbouring Moabmon Alliance lately?”
In response to the general Roa‘s report, the priest Amum spoke in a calm voice.
Hearing this, Emperor Ramset slowly nodded.
“Now that you mention it, it does sound like that… Are those filthy heretics starting to corrupt the disgusting Orcs?”
“Haha, it’s like they say, ‘birds of a feather flock together.’ It seems the dirty doctrines of heresy suit the filthy Orcs well.”
Roa let out a light laugh.
However, Amum responded in a serious tone.
“This is not something to take lightly. The fact that the Orcs are following the doctrine of heresy means that there is a direct rebellion against Goddess Isiris sprouting among them. Depending on the situation, this could become a great danger.”
“What difference does it make if those filthy Orcs follow a heretic god? We can wipe them out easily enough with just one use of mind-control magic.”
Roa spoke confidently, but Amum shook his head slowly.
“Of course, even if a rebellion were to occur, it wouldn’t endanger the empire. But it’s better to extinguish a small spark before it becomes a full fire. Your Majesty, please apprehend those who are spreading this filthy doctrine immediately. We must prevent the heretical teachings from being heard on the holy lands of Goddess Isiris.”
“Hmm…”
Though Amum made his argument firmly, Emperor Ramset was still hesitant.
With the Orcs already harbouring so much dissatisfaction, would this not just provoke unnecessary trouble?
However, Amum‘s reasoning also made sense.
Furthermore, he didn’t want to risk angering Goddess Isiris by neglecting the heretics, so he decided to follow Amum‘s suggestion and ordered the arrest of the leaders spreading the heretical doctrine.
But then…
“!… Wh-What…”
“It’s been a long time, Your Highness.”
“Seeing you again is revolting. Isn’t it, brother?”
At the unexpected arrival of these figures, Emperor Ramset’s face froze in shock.
