Chapter 6
(Lily)
“Hehe”
A peace between the demon race and humans, and now even a summoning order for the former Seven Deadly Sins of the Demon King? It’s like a rice cake rolling into my mouth without me even opening it. My head is filled with happy thoughts of how I could make the most fun out of this situation.
Step, step.
Oh no, was I too lost in my imagination? Hearing my sister’s footsteps approaching the door, I quickly took my ear off the wall and jumped into bed.
My sister opened the closed door, and seeing me lying in bed as if I had beaten her to it, she forced a bright smile and spoke.
“Lily, shall we go out for the first time in a while?”
Eve didn’t seem to want to tell me everything. But still, an outing after so long, and with my sister too—this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
“Yeah, I’d love to, Sis! Are we going right now?”
With eyes that practically sparkled with excitement, I nodded eagerly. Hearing my answer, my sister ordered Edel, who had been listening to our conversation nearby, to quickly pack our bags and prepare the carriage. Then she took my hand and led me out of the room.
But wait, what about the time I was supposed to spend reading pink-tinted books with Sis? It had been such a rare opportunity, and I didn’t want to miss it… Worried, I looked up at her while holding her hand and asked,
“Sis, are you not going to read me a book anymore? I was really looking forward to it…”
At my sad tone, my sister glanced down at me, then pulled out a book she had hidden, lifting it next to her face as if to proudly show it off.
“I knew you’d say that, so I brought the book with me. I’ll read it to you once we’re in the carriage. Don’t worry, Lily.”
As expected, my meticulous sister Eve had anticipated my thoughts long before I did. Honestly, I wouldn’t care if she just threw the book out the window, but still, it’s the thought that counts.
With my heart even fuller now, I happily passed through the mansion’s entrance. The carriage that greeted us looked massive, even considering how small I was.
In our rush, all we had packed were several sets of spare clothes and bags filled to the brim with heavy gold coins, along with the coachman to lead us. Even though it seemed too few people for what would surely be a long trip outside the mansion, the smaller the group, the easier it would be for me to move around and create more exciting opportunities for my little performances, so I didn’t mind.
The coachman, as if he had been waiting, opened the door and stood by as we climbed in. My sister got in first, holding out her hand as a signal for me to grab it.
“Upsy-daisy.”
The carriage was even higher than I thought, and I struggled a bit to get up. Once the coachman confirmed that my sister and I were both on board, he cracked the whip, and with the sound of wind being sliced, the horses neighed and we started off.
Inside the carriage, it felt so comfortable that I could almost imagine I was lying in my bed back in the mansion. Is this what they call an unshakable comfort? I don’t know who coined the phrase, but I’d gladly give them five stars. But no matter how great the carriage is, I still had something I wanted to do.
“Sis, Sis. Can you read me the book now?”
“Of course, my dear little sister. How could I refuse?”
My sister laughed, spreading her arms wide as if inviting me in, smiling beautifully. Once again, it seemed she failed to hide her gorgeous appearance today.
Hehe. Those two plump lumps of fat seem to be welcoming me. This feels great. Bring out the drinks and the book—Lily’s time has arrived!!
I quickly snuggled into her arms, resting my head on her two large, motherly cushions. Yep, being beautiful really is the best. If you’re pretty, everything is forgiven. I’ve probably died at the hands of beautiful girls dozens of times already, but if I were to die now, I’d have no regrets.
My sister embraced me, trapping me in her arms, and started reading the book she had brought.
One page, two pages, three pages…
How long had she been reading? Absentmindedly, I glanced out the window and saw that the sun was racing toward the horizon, and evening was rapidly turning to night. The coachman, perhaps sensing this too, brought the horses to a halt and politely opened the carriage door.
-“Milady, the day is coming to an end. There’s a village nearby, and it would be wise to rest there for the night. Traveling in the dark outside the estate is dangerous.”
“Hmm, you’re right. Lead us to the place.”
After about thirty minutes of travel, we finally arrived at the village the coachman had mentioned. Contrary to what its name suggested, the “village” presented a rather grand appearance. In terms of size, it was a bit smaller than a typical city, but larger than what you’d expect from a village—it had a somewhat in-between quality.
“Wow… Sis, are we really staying here tonight?”
“Of course, Lily. It’s your first time sleeping outside the mansion, isn’t it?”
“Yeah! I’m so excited and can’t wait. Hehe.”
For nearly three full years, my activity radius had barely extended beyond the mansion, let alone the estate. So, this outing held significant meaning for me in this life.
Before filming a movie, it’s only natural to scout the location and gather preliminary research. Although I recently threw in a small-scale fountain scene, it barely scratched the itch. I miss those sorrowful, guilt-ridden faces. It seems like it’s time to replenish my supply of emotional turmoil, just like how I recently refueled on protein with that steak.
Lost in these delightful thoughts for what felt like quite a while, the carriage finally led us to what appeared to be the nicest lodging in the village.
My sister gave the coachman one last order to prepare and return by 6 AM tomorrow, then sent him off.
After securing a room at the inn, we left our luggage to the attendants to handle.
“Sis, what should we do now?”
“It’s still early to go to bed. How about we go explore the village, Lily?”
“Yes! I’d love that! Love, love, love!”
Today really seems to be a day where everything goes my way. If my sister had suggested we go to bed right away, I wouldn’t have shown it, but I probably would’ve been secretly sulking. So, we grabbed some money and headed off to explore the village market.
However, neither Eve nor Lily had noticed the two figures following closely behind them.
***
The marketplace in this seemingly peaceful village was bustling with all kinds of shops. While Eve was preoccupied with thoughts of how to make this first trip outside the estate with her little sister a memorable one, Lily, following closely behind her sister, was busy scheming how to make things (entertaining only for herself) more interesting.
Contrary to Lily’s wish for something ominous and thrilling to happen, the lively, crowded marketplace seemed unwilling to fulfill her desires.
Fruit stalls, hardware stores, weapon shops, souvenir stands, restaurants—there was nothing that wasn’t available here. Amidst the chaos, Lily made her way toward a weapon shop. As she browsed the displayed items, her eyes landed on a gleaming steel dagger that seemed to scream, “Buy me!” if only it had a mouth.
If I had something like this, the possibilities would be endless.
Just as she was about to pass it by with a casual glance, her sister, who had been picking out food from a street vendor moments earlier, suddenly appeared beside her and handed her one of the skewers she was holding.
Nom, nom.
“Lily, is there anything you want to buy?”
I shook my head.
“No, I’m good.”
Not particularly interested, I answered my sister with a simple remark and continued eating the food she gave me. Then, without a word, Eve picked up the dagger I had briefly glanced at and handed it to the shopkeeper, an old man with patchy hair.
“Ten gold.”
The shopkeeper set the price for the steel dagger at a hefty ten gold. Judging by the way he looked at us, it seemed he was quoting a price that could sustain a family of four in the human world for half a year, thinking we were naive and clueless. Naturally, my sister was going to get angry—
“Here you go.”
“Thank you. Have a good night.”
…and just like that, the transaction was over. Well, we are high-ranking demons, so it’s not like we’re short on money.
Still, I couldn’t help but wonder why my sister bought the dagger, considering she could already summon weapons like swords and spears at will using blood magic. As if answering my silent question, she knelt down in front of me and handed me the dagger, still sheathed.
“Here, Lily. This is a gift from your sister. Even though I’m with you, you should at least know how to defend yourself. You wouldn’t just carelessly toss aside or ignore your sister’s gift, would you?”
As if! I shook my head vigorously, declaring with all the sincerity of a doting little sister, “I’ll treasure it forever!”—a slightly cringey but accurate portrayal of a siscon younger sibling.
Even though things hadn’t played out exactly the way I’d wanted, I couldn’t help but feel content. Just as I was brushing aside my lingering thoughts and preparing to move on to the next shop, I turned my head and spotted a pair of red-eyed figures—a man and a woman—glaring at us from a narrow alley.
The moment they realized I had noticed them, they flinched in surprise and quickly disappeared into the dark, shadowy alley, devoid of any light.
Oh my, what a lucky day this is! I have to follow them before they get away, hehe. Forgetting about Eve, I immediately headed toward the alley where they had vanished.
Meanwhile, Eve said,
“Lily, don’t you think this hairpin would look just lovely on you?”
“… …”
“Lily…?”
