Chapter 36
Agatha approached with a bright smile that seemed out of place in the darkness.
Like a child encountering a fascinating animal, his eyes sparkled with curiosity as he spoke.
“Honestly, I hoped we’d meet again… but I didn’t expect it to be this soon. Perhaps it’s the grace of the gods?”
A cold sweat ran down my back at Agatha’s seemingly friendly tone.
Grace of the gods, my foot—this is the gods’ trickery!
‘Why is he so fixated on me?’
Could it be that he’s still holding onto the grudges from back then?
Maybe he’s upset that I didn’t smack him hard enough at that time?
‘What a petty little punk.’
Caught up in various thoughts, I bit my lip.
Recalling the insane things he did in the original story was enough to send a chill down my spine.
“I don’t know why you would want to see me again.”
“Oh?”
“And it’s not like our last encounter ended well.”
I tried to act as casually as possible.
I responded smoothly, putting on a friendly smile while stepping back.
Nothing good could come from getting involved with this lunatic.
So, I had to push him away as coldly as possible without causing trouble later.
“I don’t see any reason to be interrogated by you in a place like this.”
In other words, I was saying, let’s not bother with this now and talk later.
I mean, with all the people he needs to care for and followers at his side, why is he even here?
Don’t you have anything better to do?
Huh? Aren’t you busy?
‘Ugh, what a pitiful life I lead.’
Forget Xenon—I just want to escape.
“It’s precisely because of that attitude.”
He looked at my crumpled expression with amusement and took long strides toward me with his long legs.
Then, he gently took my hand.
When he grabbed my hand, I jolted like an eel struck by lightning.
‘What’s with him, is he crazy?’
He didn’t seem to mind, though.
“That distrustful attitude of yours.”
With a flash in his eyes, he continued in a low voice.
“I’ve always lived among people who trusted my words without question, who would willingly lay down their lives for me.”
Sure, I bet you have.
You were practically a cult leader!
“Well, I think seeing you behave like this might just increase the number of people who don’t trust you.”
I shook off his cold grip on my hand and took a step back.
“If you grab someone’s hand in the middle of the night without their consent, it’s only natural for you to seem untrustworthy.”
Perhaps he didn’t expect me to refuse.
Agatha, staring blankly at his rejected hand, soon smiled and reached out to me once more.
“You’re truly intriguing. It makes me want to add you to my collection—no, make you my follower.”
What’s the use of having ears if he never listens?
From beginning to end, he never heeds a single word.
‘Now what?’
Should I stab his eyes and make a run for it while he’s caught off guard?
Taking a deep breath, I shot back with a warning.
“Listen, Agatha. I have no intention of joining that crazy cult of yours, so kindly stay away from me.”
“Yes, that’s it!”
Agatha’s green eyes glinted ominously at my words.
“It’s as if you know my true nature. My powers, the sides of me I try to hide.”
“…….”
“It’s like you know everything about me.”
Oh no, I had unconsciously let slip something I knew from the original story.
I stepped back, breaking into a cold sweat.
I had just poked the sleeping lion.
“I’m growing more and more curious. What are you really?”
“…….”
“I want to dissect you, break you down, and figure you out.”
‘Haha, he’s completely lost it.’
It seemed like I had just triggered this lunatic’s berserk switch.
You shouldn’t press the ultimate berserk button of the craziest character in Three Lives Chronicle lightly….
“Haha, you’re making strange jokes now.”
I slowly backed away, hands behind my back, while purchasing a handful of pepper with 10 points of favor.
[‘Magical Pepper’ has been purchased.]
[Remaining Favor: 52]
‘Ah, my hard-earned favor.’
It pained me to use the favor I had accumulated, but what choice did I have?
If he came any closer, I’d just throw this in his face and make a run for it.
“Jokes? Jokes, you say? That hurts.”
He put on a pouty expression as if he were genuinely offended, reaching out toward me.
“I always speak from the heart. So, how about it? Will you join me?”
I stared at Agatha’s outstretched pale, slender hand.
It was a tricky situation.
If I refused, I would make Agatha my enemy.
But I couldn’t just accept his offer with my teammates waiting for me.
After a moment of hesitation, I cautiously declined his handshake.
“I really should get going. My companions are waiting, and it’s getting late, so we should disperse soon….”
“Hmm, is that so?”
Agatha widened his eyes as if genuinely surprised.
He probably never expected anyone to turn him down.
‘But if he’s taking it this well, maybe he’ll let me go home.’
But his next words left me speechless.
“That won’t do.”
“…Excuse me?”
“I don’t feel like letting you go.”
Wait, why do you get to decide whether I leave or not?
“I still want to learn more about you, Wendy.”
His face drew nearer, like a runaway train without brakes.
“I want to know what kind of thoughts fill that little head of yours.”
“…….”
“I want to see inside, deeply and secretly.”
Hot breath brushed against my lips, and his fingers grazed my hair.
Instinctively closing my eyes, I clutched the pepper in my hand tightly.
‘It’s all or nothing.’
At this point, I had no other choice.
Without hesitation, I prepared to throw the pepper.
“My comrade…”
A familiar low voice came from nearby.
“She said she wants to leave.”
The voice I had longed to hear reached my ears.
A menacing blade, glinting coldly, sliced through the darkness, coming between Agatha and me.
“Are those ears of yours just for decoration?”
In the darkness, eyes, sunken deep with intensity, gleamed threateningly.
“Xenon.”
I looked at the wavering shadow in surprise.
It seemed that Eros had indeed found the right person.
“I followed you because it was suspicious seeing you wandering alone so late.”
Xenon muttered as he approached me, his tone biting.
“Who would’ve thought you’d be getting harassed by a pervert like this.”
Maybe it was the word “pervert” or “harassment” that struck a nerve with Agatha.
“Harassment? It’s just a negotiation.”
Agatha corrected with a stiff expression, lifting the corners of his mouth slightly.
“In your country, do you call it a negotiation when you force someone who says no to join your team?”
Xenon’s words made Agatha turn his head with a faint smile.
“Wendy, did I ever force you to join me?”
“That’s…”
Caught off guard, I was at a loss for words, and Xenon answered in my place.
“Whatever you say, she’s already part of our team.”
“Team members can always change.”
“That’s not what’s important right now.”
“It’s an important matter to me.”
“It’s only important to you.”
“I doubt Wendy would see it that way.”
…This was bad.
Of all things, why did it have to be a clash of pride between two stubborn men?
Now I was stuck awkwardly in the middle.
[The Constellation, Love’s Wand, enjoys this love triangle.]
And why is this constellation behaving like this again?
‘Love triangle, my foot.’
Neither of these guys has even a speck of affection for me.
Just look at their scowling faces—what’s the point of their handsome appearances?
One’s always ready to draw his sword at the slightest provocation.
The other’s a lunatic who gets rid of anything that bothers him.
“Enough, both of you…”
Just as I was about to tell them to stop.
“Agatha, sir, I’ve been looking for you.”
A shadowy figure emerged from the darkness and addressed him.
“Ah!”
Startled, I pointed aimlessly into the air.
The tense standoff between the two shifted as their gazes turned toward the newcomer.
A figure cloaked in black from head to toe, wearing a crimson mantle adorned with a cross entwined with rose vines.
It was one of Agatha’s followers.
The follower bowed deeply as soon as he spotted Agatha.
“You said you’d be back shortly.”
Seeing who it was, Agatha responded with a slightly irritated tone.
“I lost my enthusiasm because of an unwelcome guest.”
“I’m sorry, but you’ve delayed far beyond the scheduled time….”
“Enough.”
“……”
“That’s enough.”
Agatha cut off the follower’s words sharply and turned his head with a flick.
“I was just about to leave anyway.”
The follower looked at him anxiously.
Agatha, ignoring the follower entirely, turned to me with a polite gesture.
“It’s a pity, but I’ll step back for today.”
His golden hair shimmered in the moonlight, radiating a dazzling glow.
Wrapped in a contrasting black cloak, he looked like a fallen angel.
“See you next time.”
With a gentle smile directed at me, he turned and walked away.
As Agatha’s silhouette faded into the shadows, I let out a sigh of relief, only to hear Xenon’s voice behind me.
“So.”
Xenon grabbed my shoulder as I tried to sneak away, speaking in a low voice.
“What exactly were you doing out here alone at this hour?”
“Well, that’s…”
‘Damn it.’
It’s one hurdle after another.
