Chapter 65
[Fury Arrow]
Like a storm, or a raging lightning bolt.
The arrow shot forward like a meteor, carrying immense destruction.
An embodiment of pure annihilation, it tore through the air, fired by the hands of a prodigious avatar.
This immense power, feared even by the Heavenly Emperor, who cast it down to earth, was momentarily recreated.
Boom!
The thunderous sound was so deafening that I instinctively covered my ears.
The cave trembled as though it might collapse at any moment.
“Is it over now?”
I squinted through the swirling clouds of dust, my vision hazy.
The thought crossed my mind to utter the iconic words, ‘Did we get it?’ but I decided against it.
“Did we get it?”
…Seriously, who was that just now?
I suppressed a groan as I looked around to find the culprit who had dared to jinx us with that infamous line.
But before I could locate the traitor, the colossal spider’s body began to rise slowly from within the dust cloud.
“How…”
Even after taking such a devastating blow, it was still alive.
Was that phrase really cursed enough to bring this monster back to life?
Fortunately, it appeared to have sustained some injuries.
The grotesque creature staggered, dripping green ichor from its hideous maw.
However, the overwhelming killing intent radiating from its massive frame was still paralyzing.
Screeeech!
Its ear-piercing scream reverberated throughout the cave, brimming with rage.
“Damn it…”
Muttering under my breath, I quickly scanned my surroundings.
“We need a close-range attacker!”
Standing idly by wasn’t an option. If conventional attacks didn’t work, we had to switch to Plan B.
The Fury Arrow was one of the most powerful ranged skills available.
If even that couldn’t pierce through, it meant that ranged attacks were ineffective against this monster.
The solution was clear: destroy the Wind Barrier surrounding the boss.
Breaking that barrier was the key to defeating the boss of the Wind’s Stronghold.
“Caltain.”
“I was already planning on it.”
Caltain stepped forward, arms crossed, as though he had been waiting for me to call him.
“All I need to do is break that barrier, right?”
He cracked his knuckles as he stared at the swirling Wind Barrier enveloping the spider.
“I’ll need two people to back me up.”
“Two?”
Caltain nodded and continued.
“I’ll create an opening. I need someone to strike through the gap and another to throw them into it.”
As expected of the male protagonist of the original story, Caltain was strong.
However, aside from one specialized skill, most of his abilities focused on enhancing his physical capabilities.
“Understood. I’ll find the right people.”
Turning away, I scanned the group for someone who fit Caltain’s requirements.
Just then…
“I’ll do it.”
“This is my specialty!”
Two figures stepped forward simultaneously.
The first was Xenon, and the second was Darwin.
“Why are you…”
“Why are you…”
The two glared at each other, speaking in unison before turning their heads away in disdain.
Despite their bickering, even mortal enemies needed to work together in dire times like this.
“Alright, Xenon, you’ll attack through the gap. Darwin, you’ll throw him into it.”
“Got it.”
“Fine.”
Though they growled at each other, both men nodded in agreement, their expressions resolute.
“Caltain, you’re up.”
At my signal, Caltain glanced briefly at Xenon and Darwin before speaking.
“I’ll create the opening. You two jump in when the time is right.”
Without further ado, Caltain leaped forward.
His long, sturdy legs propelled him effortlessly toward the boss.
His movements were precise and unhesitating, like those of a seasoned warrior honed for this very moment.
The movements were elegant, devoid of any waste, and the techniques were straightforward.
As I watched in awe, Caltain reached the barrier in the blink of an eye, raising his right fist.
[Kangma]
[Shura Breaks the Heavens]
The moment the immense power condensed into his fist, Caltain slammed it into the barrier.
Crack!
A thunderous bolt of lightning lit up the entire area, briefly turning everything white, accompanied by a deafening rumble that shook the cavern.
“Unbelievable…”
The cave walls cracked and split as though struck by an earthquake, leaving me utterly speechless.
The combination of Kangma, which amplified power in an instant, and Shura Breaks the Heavens, a close-combat skill, produced an overwhelming force.
It was a relief he was on our team.
If such a monstrous figure had been an enemy, clearing the Thousand Origins Stronghold might have been impossible.
‘So this is what it means to be the protagonist of the original story.’
I muttered inwardly, watching as debris scattered and dissolved into the air.
‘That barrier should be broken now.’
If that shield wasn’t made of solid stone, it should’ve shattered.
Even if it were stone, it wouldn’t have survived intact—considering even the sturdy cavern walls had fractured.
But then, the sight before me made my eyes widen in disbelief.
“It’s… untouched?”
The barrier remained intact without so much as a single crack.
Its pristine form stood, as though mocking our efforts.
Caltain, equally stunned, relaxed his hand, the lightning that had gathered in his fist dissipating.
“What… what is this?”
The barrier quivered, as if alive, absorbing the energy of Shura Breaks the Heavens with a low hum.
Gulp.
“It… devoured the skill?”
The grotesque, quivering motion was like a living organism digesting its prey.
Speechless, I stared at the boss.
The enormous spider’s body was topped by brilliant blue butterfly wings, and its eight eyes glared down at us.
This boss… it was never mentioned in Three Lives Chronicle.
Up until now, I had survived using my knowledge of the story’s events. But this boss was like an unsolvable puzzle.
Still, I had no choice but to press forward.
Just as I was scanning the surroundings for a solution, a familiar voice echoed in my ear.
{You need to destroy the wind mushrooms.}
The voice was soft and languid, one I knew well.
“Sienna?”
When I called out, her voice returned, circling around me like a whisper in the wind.
{Destroy the giant wind mushrooms at the boss’s feet. They’re maintaining the barrier.}
At her words, I turned my focus to the peculiar mushrooms.
Sure enough, a faint blue glow emanated from the massive white mushrooms at the boss’s base, extending toward the barrier.
Even the smaller mushrooms clinging to the cave walls emitted the same faint glow.
I never would’ve guessed.
While I had considered the terrain might play a role, I didn’t think the mushrooms were the key to the shield.
‘Thank you, Sienna.’
Grateful, I smiled softly.
Somewhere, Sienna must’ve heard my silent thanks, as I felt a gentle nudge against my shoulder.
{Who knew being an herbalist in my past life would come in handy.}
And with that, her presence faded like a fleeting breeze.
Talking to the dead… what a mysterious and rare experience.
Turning toward Celestine, I met her gaze.
She nodded shyly, confirming my suspicion.
Using her ability to briefly communicate with spirits, she had facilitated my exchange with Sienna.
I blinked in gratitude, and Celestine smiled faintly in return.
‘My heart’s racing.’
Was it the joy of this unexpected reunion? Or the weight of the newfound opportunity?
Taking a deep breath, I refocused my thoughts. Sienna had given me the path forward, and I couldn’t squander it.
No matter how complex the puzzle, every piece eventually falls into place.
Even at the edge of a cliff, there’s always a way for those determined to move forward.
“Destroy the mushrooms on the walls! Those are the key to the barrier!”
“The mushrooms?”
Caltain’s gaze shifted toward the glowing fungi as he clenched his right fist again.
With another powerful strike, Shura Breaks the Heavens obliterated the mushrooms, leaving nothing but charred remains.
The faint blue glow ceased emanating from them.
“You’re saying these mushrooms are what’s maintaining the barrier?”
Caltain immediately grasped my intentions and nodded.
“Alright then. Let’s crush every last one of them.”
