Chapter 90
—
“VR device?”
Areum blinked her wide eyes again as she asked.
It wasn’t that she didn’t know what a VR device was.
It’s just that it wasn’t a term one would expect to hear in a liberal arts lecture at the Academy.
“Areum, can you come over here for a moment?”
“Y-Yes, Professor!”
At Si-hyun’s beckoning, Areum stood up and trotted over to the professor.
When her student approached, Si-hyun retrieved the devices stored in her bracelet.
Among them, she handed Areum one meant to be worn on the head.
“This is a device that uses sight-sharing magic as its base. Da-young put some effort into creating it.”
“Oh, you mean the Wings Guild? A B-rank Crafting-type Hunter!”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Areum received the device from Si-hyun and examined it closely, turning it over in her hands.
Meanwhile, Eun-byul, sitting further back, raised a question.
“Professor, did you say sight-sharing magic?”
“Why? Would you like to know more?”
“W-Well…”
The overly casual response left Eun-byul flustered.
She was already amazed by the fact that the magic had been developed.
And yet, Si-hyun was offering to explain it without hesitation?
‘If it’s a magic she created herself, its value must be enormous…’
Earlier, when she thought, “like teacher, like student” about Areum, it hadn’t been an empty thought.
Professor Jung Si-hyun had an air of nonchalance yet exuded a unique atmosphere.
‘Is it really okay to learn magic so easily…?’
Caught off guard, Eun-byul found herself blinking repeatedly, unsure of what to do.
When no response came from her, Si-hyun tilted her head briefly in confusion before naturally turning her attention back to Areum.
“…Ah.”
Eun-byul opened her mouth slightly as if to say something, but then stopped.
She looked at the professor with a complicated expression.
Meanwhile, Si-hyun thought to herself casually,
‘She must not be that interested since it’s simple magic.’
In the other world, sight-sharing magic was considered relatively common.
So, she had been willing to explain it readily, but seeing no enthusiasm, she assumed Eun-byul thought similarly.
Si-hyun and Eun-byul were operating on entirely different wavelengths.
“P-Professor, do I just put this on my head?”
“That’s right. Would you like to try it out lightly?”
“Yes, yes! I’d love to!”
As Areum put the device on her head, Si-hyun controlled the mana stone remotely.
The VR device, Da-young’s masterpiece, activated smoothly, emitting a soft glow.
“Wooooow! This is amazing!”
Areum’s exclamation burst out immediately.
“Careful now. Remember, only your vision is changing.”
“Yes, ma’am!”
Even in her short response, Areum’s excitement was palpable.
Seeing her enthusiastic reaction, Si-hyun smiled with satisfaction.
Creak—
One by one, students began entering the lecture hall.
The newcomers, wary of encountering new monster models, paused in confusion.
Their eyes were drawn to Areum, who was wearing a strange device and gesturing wildly at the air.
A moment later, after checking the time, Si-hyun lightly patted Areum’s shoulder.
“Areum, let’s stop here for now.”
“Yes, Professor!”
Areum removed the now-inactive device and handed it back to Si-hyun.
Regret was practically dripping from her eyes.
‘I wish I could see more…’
It had been a profoundly novel sensation.
The professor’s VR device offered a unique experience that couldn’t easily be found elsewhere.
Back at her seat, Areum eagerly anticipated the lecture’s start, her impatience growing as she yearned to see more of what she had just experienced.
“…Welcome, everyone.”
As the students gathered, Si-hyun greeted them, signaling the beginning of the lecture.
She took attendance as usual and then transitioned into a theoretical lecture about a new monster.
This time, however, the students were focused for a different reason.
They were curious about the VR device Areum had worn during the break.
The desire to try it themselves was simple yet compelling motivation.
“…It’s break time now. We’ll use the new device in the sixth period.”
Creak. Click, click—
Right on time, Si-hyun left the lecture hall.
The remaining students started murmuring among themselves.
“It’s definitely a VR device, right?”
“I get motion sickness with 3D stuff. Do you think it’ll be okay?”
Some students approached Areum to ask questions.
“That was a magic tool?!”
“She’s really making good use of her crafting-type connections.”
Once again, the students were visibly surprised to hear it was a magic tool.
At the same time, some began to harbour doubts.
Most of these students were those with a magic-type specialty.
‘She made that magic herself?’
‘That’s not something just anyone can do.’
‘Does Professor Jung Si-hyun have significant connections in the magic field too?’
Of course, no one voiced these thoughts aloud.
After all, finding something “ordinary” in the Introduction to Monster Studies class would have been stranger.
In every sense, the students had a lot to digest.
Creak—
Just before the break ended, Si-hyun returned.
She scanned the lecture hall to ensure all the students were present.
Nodding lightly in satisfaction, she addressed the class with a smile.
“Now, I’ll lend you the VR devices I’ve prepared. Before we begin watching…”
She distributed the devices and gave them a list of precautions.
Don’t move too much to avoid injuries.
Handle the devices carefully since they’re expensive.
Once everything was ready, the students put on the devices simultaneously at Si-hyun’s instruction.
Si-hyun snapped her fingers lightly.
Snap!
In that moment, the previously quiet lecture hall erupted.
“Whoa!”
“Wow!”
“Everyone, please be careful not to get hurt!”
“This is awesome!”
“It’s so cool!”
Si-hyun’s voice was quickly drowned out.
The students were so excited they couldn’t contain their cheers.
They were immersed in a magical world.
Although their bodies remained in the lecture hall, their vision had shifted entirely.
They were in a dungeon.
Not just any dungeon—a high-ranking one they had never experienced before.
“Gasp!”
“Eek!”
The students experienced a real-time dungeon raid from the professor’s perspective.
The VR footage, enhanced with magic, caused no motion sickness.
Each time the sword swung, monsters were sliced cleanly.
And each time, the students marveled, comparing it to their own experiences.
Melee-type students admired the professor’s precise movements.
Magic-type students found the perspective of a front-line fighter exhilarating and fresh.
Together, they were captivated by the footage.
“Ahhh!”
“Eek!”
Today’s Introduction to Monster Studies class was livelier than ever.
So much so that passersby stopped to peer into the lecture hall through the windows.
* * *
After the lecture ended, and Si-hyun left with Areum.
Most of the students remaining in the lecture hall stared blankly into space.
“…I want to see more.”
“Me too…”
They were lost in the lingering aftereffects and couldn’t bring themselves to get up.
The students’ feelings were largely similar.
‘I never thought I’d be able to experience something so vivid without any side effects.’
In summary, the footage was essentially a massacre where monsters were swept away unilaterally.
The content was thrilling and exhilarating at the same time.
“Hey, I’m sorry for getting mad before. So this is what it feels like to be in the vanguard position.”
“No, it’s okay. I could’ve done better too.”
Some students exchanged awkward apologies with one another.
Magic-type students had experienced the vividness of melee combat, while melee-type students gained insights into what they needed to improve.
Naturally, they began to think from the other’s perspective.
Today’s lecture had facilitated mutual understanding.
“Should we go to the dungeon today too?”
“Let’s go!”
After the Introduction to Monster Studies lecture ended, many students headed for the dungeon.
It had become a part of their daily routine.
Meanwhile, at the professor’s office where Si-hyun and Areum arrived.
“P-Professor, about the VR device…”
“Hmm? What about it?”
“I-I kind of… want to have one. I-Is it expensive?”
“Hmm…”
Si-hyun thought briefly before answering.
“It is expensive, but for our dear Areum, I wouldn’t mind giving you one. But there’s one big problem.”
“W-What is it?!”
Startled, Areum perked up her ears, waiting for the next words.
Si-hyun smirked and continued speaking.
“From recording to playback, everything relies on magic. You’d have to study hard.”
“…Ugh.”
Areum’s eyes darted around nervously.
Her desires were instantly quelled.
* * *
In an office building in the United States.
A Western man with an unremarkable appearance, Evan, handed an object to his counterpart.
It was an ordinary-looking wristwatch.
The clean-cut man, Jason, strapped on the watch and twisted his wrist to inspect its design.
“I’ll emphasize this again as it’s important.”
Evan, a returnee from the United States, spoke.
“The Hunter Association staff will be dispatched to Korea for Kim Ji-a’s S-rank evaluation. You’ll accompany them as part of the team heading to Korea.”
While it was largely a formality, there was a rule that S-ranks had to be verified by the World Hunter Association.
That’s what Evan was referring to.
“At the same time, a congratulatory party will be held for Kim Ji-a. That’s where it starts. Find my target, who’s likely hiding somewhere.”
“You’re confident they’ll attend the party?”
“Yes, based on the information, there’s a high probability. If they come near, the watch will react. When that happens, create a situation where I can make contact with them.”
“Hmm…”
Jason lightly stroked his beard and asked.
“What’s the criterion for the watch to react?”
“When it detects mana above the threshold I set for the magic tool. It’ll identify the target.”
“Interesting.”
For Evan, creating a mid-level magic tool like this was no challenge at all.
“I don’t want to cause a commotion. So please handle this discreetly.”
“Understood.”
Jason smiled as he lifted the corners of his mouth.
Meanwhile, his thoughts wandered elsewhere.
‘If needed, I’ll make it as if this never happened.’
Detecting mana above a certain threshold and identifying the person?
What a fascinating target.
Jason felt a strong curiosity about the person Evan was searching for.
‘Heh, I wonder what kind of person they are. I’ll have to see for myself.’
Jason grinned, showing a warm smile.
