Surviving as the Hidden Mastermind in an Academy Story 116

Chapter 116

‘Hmm, this is it.’

The situation was urgent in many ways, but that didn’t diminish the sheer thrill of the moment.

I had always thought there might be a day when I’d ride Yongyong or Greenie for a mission, but I didn’t expect that opportunity to come so soon.

As Yongyong tore through the battlefield, the cheers of the soldiers behind us filled me with immense pride.

It was, in a word, exhilarating.

“…The aggro is too much,” Addy commented.

“Well, nothing we can do about it.”

“Good job, Yongyong.”

While Addy and I exchanged words, Jacqueline stroked Yongyong’s head lovingly.

Even though this was the first time Yongyong met Jacqueline, it followed her as if they had known each other for years.

In fact, Yongyong seemed to enjoy her attention even more than mine.

“My zone is the left side of the front line,” Jacqueline said as she leaped off Yongyong’s head.

“This won’t take long.”

Shing—

From Jacqueline’s sleeve emerged her signature sharp weapon.

Swish—

Seeing her draw her weapon, I too unsheathed my Black Shadow Blade.

“All we need to do is ensure the allied forces advance properly from behind…”

Flash—

Before I could ask Jacqueline anything, she dashed forward.

Yongyong, without waiting for my command, spread its wings and took flight.

It really seemed like Jacqueline and Yongyong were perfectly in sync.

‘Is that a creature created with black magic?’

“That’s likely what’s called a Black Golem,” Addy explained.

The name suited its appearance perfectly.

The massive creature, shaped like a typical golem, was entirely black.

It was no surprise to see Jacqueline charging ahead independently, ignoring formation—that was something both Addy and I were used to.

As we watched her destroy the Black Golem with a single strike, Addy and I prepared for our part of the battle.

“They say it’s hard to destroy, but Jacqueline makes it look easy,” Addy remarked.

“So, does it have any weak points?”

“From what’s known, there’s a core hidden somewhere in its body that serves as its power source. Destroying that should do the trick.”

“And where’s this core hidden?”

“It varies from one golem to another.”

“Great.”

It sounded tougher than I expected.

Hearing about the Black Golem’s mechanics only made Jacqueline’s effortless destruction of one seem even more impressive.

Her prowess in combat was truly unparalleled.

“Addy, you stay back and support us. Be careful not to lose your mask.”

“Yes, just finish this quickly.”

Addy wasn’t suited for close combat—her role was as a supporter from afar.

Before becoming my secretary, she had fought alongside me as a skilled mage.

A very capable one, at that.

Fwoosh—

‘It’s been a while since I felt this.’

It was like the warmth of sunlight enveloping my entire body, invigorating me from head to toe.

Despite not having practiced magic for a long time, Addy’s skills were as sharp as ever.

Even with her daily load of paperwork, her magic hadn’t dulled one bit.

Her specialty wasn’t offensive magic.

She was a classic support mage.

She cast buffs that drastically enhanced the physical abilities of front-line fighters.

Fwoooosh—

Not just me, but even Jacqueline in the distance was bathed in her radiant magic.

Having provided both of us with buffs, Addy began preparing her attack magic.

Crash—

Meanwhile, I faced off against a Black Golem.

Contrary to expectations, my blade worked against it.

It was fundamentally tough, but not so much that it couldn’t be cut.

‘Right, the First Elder was the real outlier.’

Perhaps it was because I’d fought the Nameless First Elder last night, but compared to him, the Black Golem was almost adorable.

Though cloaked in black magic, the concentration wasn’t dense enough to nullify a blade infused with regular mana.

Moreover, the golem’s large size made its movements sluggish.

If I had to compare, it felt similar to a Death Knight, though less agile and far more durable.

Crash—

“Addy! Once I’ve cut it down, finish it off!”

Unlike Jacqueline, I didn’t have the insight to instantly locate and destroy the core.

‘Hmm, no need to go that far.’

I didn’t have to do it myself, not with Addy supporting me from the back.

Boom—

Addy answered with action rather than words.

She fired an energy blast at the golem, which had been cut into five pieces, shattering it into dust.

I wasn’t sure how big the core inside the golem was, but with that level of destruction, it had to be obliterated.

‘Okay.’

After confirming that Addy had finished it off cleanly, I charged forward.

Jacqueline was already far ahead, having destroyed several golems on her own.

I needed to step up my game.

“P-Princess!”

“Hmmmmm.”

Arte removed the telescope from her eye and let out a perplexing sound.

The massive Undead Wyvern that had suddenly appeared from the Allied Forces’ side had dived straight into the battlefield teeming with Black Golems.

From her vantage point, Arte could clearly see the situation.

The side with the Undead Wyvern was breaking through sharply.

The few individuals who had disembarked from the wyvern were destroying Black Golems and advancing rapidly—several times faster than Arte had anticipated.

‘That Undead Wyvern…’

Arte’s sharp gaze followed the wyvern as it flew into the air, preparing to dive again.

She hadn’t expected an Undead to appear on the Allied Forces’ side.

‘There’s no way they have a black mage on their side.’

“Princess! What should we do?”

“Wait a moment. I’m thinking.”

Arte had, by now, become the de facto decision-maker for the Flora Kingdom’s forces.

Initially, she was more of a symbolic presence on the battlefield as a royal, but as the battles progressed, Arte had become the linchpin of the Flora Kingdom.

It was inevitable.

Almost all the creatures deployed on the battlefield came through channels Arte was well-acquainted with.

As she pondered, the frontlines were being breached rapidly.

The Allied Forces were advancing steadily, pushing through the Flora Kingdom’s lines.

At this rate, the defenses would collapse entirely, leading to utter destruction.

“Order a retreat.”

“Understood!”

The commander of the Flora Kingdom’s forces nodded and quickly ran off.

So far, there had been no casualties among the kingdom’s human soldiers, but if the Allied Forces pushed further in, they would soon reach the real soldiers.

At that point, the creatures made with black magic wouldn’t be the ones taking damage; it would be the actual troops.

“Where did that come from, hmm?”

Arte muttered to herself, staring at the Undead Wyvern hovering in the sky.

‘That thing looks like something the Third Elder summoned.’

Arte was almost entirely certain.

There was no way the Allied Forces had a black mage capable of summoning Undead, let alone a wyvern.

That could only mean the Undead Wyvern was likely something brought into this world by the Third Elder.

‘So those people must be the ones who defeated the Third Elder.’

Arte’s eyes gleamed as she focused on the two individuals leading the charge.

If she could capture them, she might gain favor with the Founder, even surpassing the First Elder.

Greed flickered momentarily in Arte’s gaze.

She couldn’t help but imagine the power she could gain by earning the Founder’s recognition.

Arte glanced around to ensure no one else was near her.

“One.”

“Yes.”

At her call, someone appeared in the previously empty space.

A white-haired man, so perfectly sculpted he could have been described as a masterpiece, stood before her.

He wore a white suit that matched his hair.

“Do you see those people?”

“Yes.”

The man, called One, shared Arte’s line of sight.

The two individuals slicing through the frontlines and destroying the Black Golems without hesitation.

“Bring them to me. Preferably alive.”

“Understood.”

“If you can’t capture them alive, killing them is fine, but capturing them is the priority.”

“Yes.”

With a nod, One disappeared as suddenly as he had appeared.

Arte turned her attention back to the battlefield.

The Flora Kingdom’s troops were slowly retreating, likely following the commander’s orders.

Giving up the area was unfortunate, but with their current momentum and forces, it was impossible to hold.

‘I’ll have to inform the First Elder. It looks like the ones who defeated the Third Elder have shown up.’

Arte smiled, pleased with herself for obtaining this information before the First Elder.

She harbored both jealousy and an inferiority complex toward him.

The First Elder had been the first to join the Nameless Organization and had earned the Founder’s trust and recognition. His magical achievements were something Arte envied deeply.

‘If I capture those people and uncover their identities, he’ll be completely shocked. Heh.’

Arte chuckled to herself, imagining the First Elder’s astonished reaction in his low voice.

Little did she know, mere hours ago, the First Elder had been defeated and was now imprisoned in the O’Neill Kingdom’s underground dungeons.
