Chapter 76
The Undead Wyvern was surprisingly agile for its size.
Unlike before, when I swung my sword imbued with mana, the Wyvern quickly retreated with swift wing beats.
‘Quick-witted, huh.’
If it had stayed still, relying on the toughness of its bones like before, I could have sliced the Death Knight on its back in half. What a pity.
Grrr…
The Wyvern let out a low growl as it flapped its wings.
Then, it began to exit through the hole it had smashed into the building.
“What, it’s leaving?”
I hadn’t anticipated the Wyvern leaving the building so decisively.
For a moment, I hesitated.
Fortunately, there hadn’t been any fatalities caused by the Wyvern smashing into the building.
It seemed a few people had been injured by the debris.
“Everyone, move calmly toward the entrance!”
Looking down, I saw that the students were being guided in an orderly manner.
At the center of it was Professor Amilion Stappen.
Thanks to Professor Amilion’s loud commands, the students were following instructions well, even in this emergency.
Since Yuria Prisis was nowhere to be seen, she must have already gone outside to assist Erica.
‘They’ll manage, right?’
Initially, I planned to stay close to the students and protect them, but they seemed to be handling things well.
The Academy professors were responding faster than I’d expected, and Erica seemed to be doing her part outside.
After confirming the situation below, I felt slightly relieved.
“Who are you?”
Shing!
In the brief moment I looked out at the Wyvern and the chaotic scene below, someone pointed a sword at my neck.
The sword radiated sharp energy, and its mana emanated a subtle yet oppressive pressure.
The one holding the sword was none other than Cassis Sinclair.
Behind Cassis, a few professors could be seen leaping into the air.
“Everything here seems fine, so focus on protecting the students.”
Ting!
I pushed Cassis’s sword away with my finger as I spoke.
Cassis likely perceived my voice as feminine, thanks to this black mask.
“…Are you on our side?”
Cassis lowered his sword without resistance and asked.
“At the very least, I’m not on that Undead Wyvern’s side.”
“I saw you swing your sword at it.”
“Then hurry up and go protect the kids.”
“…”
Cassis hesitated, likely feeling that Professor Amilion had the situation under control.
Even I thought things looked stable.
“The entrance is probably crawling with Undead. The more people over there, the better.”
“What?”
“There’s no time to explain. Protect the students, alright?”
Leap!
With that, I shoved Cassis aside and jumped toward the hole the Undead Wyvern had created.
As soon as I emerged, the Wyvern and the Death Knight on its back charged at me as if they had been waiting.
They moved with astonishing agility for their size.
Was it because their bodies were just bones?
The Undead Wyvern lunged at me at a speed several times faster than a normal Wyvern.
Keeeeeekkhh
The Wyvern extended its claws as if to grab me, and I met its attack with my sword.
‘Strong too.’
It was swift and incredibly strong, perfectly matching its massive frame.
The Wyvern seemed surprised when I deflected it. Instead of continuing its attack, it backed off again.
Whoosh, whoosh
“Wow.”
Under the faint moonlight of the night, the bone-constructed Wyvern flapped its wings midair.
With the moon glowing beyond the Undead Wyvern, it made for an awe-inspiring sight.
“Don’t you have some kind of fire breath or something?”
Grrr…
The Undead Wyvern growled as if it understood me.
I thought it might launch something at me in response, but unfortunately, it didn’t.
Instead, it flapped its wings harder, preparing to charge at me again.
“Well, that’s disappointing.”
It made sense. Even when alive, Wyverns weren’t known to breathe fire.
Expecting such a thing from a dead one was just wishful thinking.
Screech!
The Wyvern beat its wings and charged at me again, this time aiming to headbutt me rather than clawing at me.
Its jaws opened wide as if it intended to tear me apart.
‘Not bad.’
I watched the massive creature barreling toward me.
Big, fast, powerful, and with durable bones.
Crash!
The Wyvern’s sharp teeth collided with my sword, creating a deafening boom.
It would make a perfect second Undead pet, right after Greenie.
Grin
Without realizing it, a smile spread across my face.
Shudder
At the same time, I felt a faint vibration from the Wyvern’s teeth against my sword.
Even with the black mask hiding my expression, the Wyvern seemed to sense my grin.
I didn’t know why, but its body trembled.
***
“Ugh, when is he coming?!”
Crash!
Erica swung her dagger furiously, shouting in frustration.
With each swing, Skeletons crumbled into piles of bones with shattering sounds.
But soon after, the pieces began moving again as if each bone had a life of its own.
Skeletons whose heads remained intact reassembled themselves immediately.
“Phew.”
Erica exhaled heavily.
The moment the Undead Wyvern crashed into the building, Erica instinctively realized something.
Either Yuria or the Commander wouldn’t be able to come and help.
From that point onward, even the mental messages she had been exchanging with the Commander ceased.
Still, she thought that since everyone inside the building, willingly or unwillingly, understood the situation, someone would come to help soon enough.
Shing!
“Ugh, I’m really not built for this kind of combat.”
This time, Erica’s blade failed to reach the Skeletons.
A nearly two-meter-tall Death Knight swung its heavy sword and intercepted Erica’s strike.
Though the Death Knight was flung far back from the impact, this kind of battle wasn’t Erica’s style.
Erica’s specialties lay in stealth and tracking—silent, covert operations.
Not that her combat skills were weak by any means, but Erica was ill-suited for fights against multiple opponents.
She excelled in one-on-one combat, though.
‘Why isn’t anyone coming out?’
Erica held her position, resisting the urge to chase down the Death Knight she had sent flying and dismantle its head.
If she abandoned her spot, the Skeletons and Death Knights would immediately pour into the building.
They would collide with the countless students running toward the entrance.
She didn’t even want to imagine what would happen after that.
Even if she disliked nobles, she didn’t want people to die.
“Damn it, everyone’s so slow!”
As Erica shouted in frustration and prepared to slash through another group of Skeletons—
“Am I too late?!”
Crack, crack, crack!
“Ah.”
It wasn’t the voice Erica had been waiting for, but it was still a welcome sound.
At the same time, a chilling cold made her body shiver as the Skeletons in front of her began to freeze one by one.
Erica turned toward the voice.
Someone in a black uniform with a hood was walking toward her with an air of leisure.
The calm, unhurried gait in this chaotic situation gave it away immediately.
It was Yuria Prisis.
“Well, you sure took your time.”
“Students will be coming out soon. We need to clear a safe path for them.”
“Are they really coming out through here? Tell them to use another exit.”
“There isn’t another exit.”
“How does that even make sense?”
Yuria merely shrugged at Erica’s incredulous remark and began gathering mana again.
While Yuria froze another group of Skeletons, the undead kept coming endlessly.
What’s more, one of the frozen Death Knights broke free of the ice and began moving again.
“They’re sturdier than I thought.”
“You need to freeze them more thoroughly. They’re breaking out because you’re doing a half-assed job.”
“Hmm. Still, I’ve already frozen more Skeletons than you’ve cut down, haven’t I?”
“…”
Erica was annoyed but couldn’t argue.
In battles like this, a mage was far superior to someone like her.
Especially when the mage specialized in ice magic and came from the Prisis family.
Whoosh!
As Erica bit her lip in irritation, a massive surge of mana erupted from Yuria’s hands again.
It was much denser and more abundant than the mana she had used to suppress the undead earlier.
Instinctively, Erica took a step back and waited for Yuria’s spell.
“Stay back!”
“I already did.”
Crack, crack, crack!
Whether Yuria heard Erica’s response or not, the mana had already surged forward before Erica could finish speaking.
As the mana expanded from Yuria’s hands, everything in front of her began freezing rapidly.
This cold was far more intense than before.
It wasn’t just cold—it was sharp, almost piercing.
Crack, crack!
‘Holy crap. This is broken.’
It felt like a snowstorm was raging in the middle of a glacier.
Yuria’s mana froze not only the approaching Skeletons and Death Knights but also the ground and surrounding trees.
And the range was no joke either.
“Phew. I think that should do it.”
“…”
Erica didn’t bother responding to Yuria.
A radius of one kilometer around them had frozen solid.
At least on the surface, nothing seemed to be moving anymore.
“This is ridiculous.”
“Pardon? What is?”
“…Nothing, forget it.”
“Shall we start creating the evacuation path now?”
“…”
Erica frowned as she watched Yuria gather mana in her hands again.
While she could use magic herself, this level of power was completely beyond her.
‘This is why some people are just born gifted.’
As she reminded herself of Yuria’s status in the Prisis family, Erica leaped away.
“Where are you going?”
“To help the Commander. And to find the Vice President or whoever he is. He’s not around here.”
“Ah, got it.”
Leaving Yuria behind, Erica immediately took off.
