Chapter 81
Randgar Bayel.
The Vice Principal of Crescent Academy and an authority in Barrier Magic.
Not only Barrier Magic, but he was also adept at other types of magic, frequently listed among the strongest magicians.
‘What is this…?!’
Despite his many accolades, Randgar had been helplessly pushed back since the beginning.
The excuse that he had already depleted some energy fighting Principal Vinuar before the battle started was irrelevant.
After all, the Black Shadow Corps’ leader seemed to have also fought an Undead Wyvern prior to this.
“Hah… Hah…”
Randgar instinctively touched his neck, gasping for breath.
At the same time, he pulled up his mana, encircling himself in a protective barrier.
It was a purely instinctual act.
Even though he knew it wouldn’t work, it gave him a momentary sense of security.
Wooong—
“Ugh… Ugh!”
The characteristic wooong sound immediately startled Randgar into standing upright.
The scene that followed was one he had already witnessed several times.
The black mana surrounding him dissipated.
It wasn’t that his opponent used some special spell.
They merely approached and reached toward him.
That alone was enough to nullify the black magic protecting Randgar.
Randgar glared briefly at the figure in the black mask before quickly retreating.
And then, it repeated.
He would retreat, gather his mana, and attack.
The tentacle-shaped mana surged toward his opponent, only to vanish the moment it reached them.
He couldn’t figure out what kind of ability this was.
It wasn’t magic nullification, nor was it a barrier.
It simply annihilated the mana itself.
“Damn it!”
Randgar, filled with frustration, screamed.
The Black Shadow Corps’ leader, wearing the black mask, hadn’t shown even a flicker of hesitation from the beginning.
He had assumed he could deal with them after taking the drug, but that had been a gross miscalculation.
Just as Randgar had hidden his trump card, his opponent had also concealed theirs.
Who would’ve thought they could annihilate all nearby attacks?
Wooong—
The sound came again.
By now, just hearing it was enough to send shivers down Randgar’s spine.
He couldn’t do anything.
All he could do was run.
As the wooong sound resonated, the Black Shadow Corps’ leader appeared in front of him without fail, reaching for his neck.
Watching that outstretched hand, Randgar felt as though the air was being choked out of him.
The pain from when he was grabbed earlier still lingered, intensifying his dread.
It wasn’t just the pain.
Goosebumps spread across his body, and his heart sank.
Helplessness.
It had been a long time since Randgar felt this level of helplessness.
A helplessness so overwhelming that it made him think he could do nothing before this person.
“Aaaaaah!!!”
Randgar roared, unleashing his mana.
He refused to admit he felt helpless.
Who was he, after all?
Someone who had risen to the position of Vice Principal of Crescent Academy purely on merit, someone who had caught the eye of the Founder.
Someone who had entered the Nameless Organization and quickly secured a position as an Elder, even mastering dark magic to an exceptional level.
“Keuk— Kuaaagh!”
But Randgar’s thoughts didn’t continue.
Even as he pushed his remaining strength to the limit, it was useless.
The overwhelming and massive mana he summoned disintegrated like ash near the Black Shadow Corps’ leader.
This time, the leader gripped Randgar’s neck even tighter, as if they wouldn’t let him escape again.
“Is this the end?”
Shivers.
Randgar felt an unsettling chill in the voice of the Black Shadow Corps’ leader.
The kind of chilling tone an absolute superior would use to dismiss someone beneath them.
A figure flashed through Randgar’s mind.
A low, cave-like voice speaking softly.
The Founder.
“Keuk— Aghhh—!”
Randgar continued to struggle until the end.
He channeled mana into his hands and feet, thrashing in desperation.
But the leader’s arm, gripping his neck, remained unyielding.
Even the mana Randgar summoned with all his might dissipated so easily, and his strength was steadily leaving him.
Even after taking the drug, he was this one-sidedly overpowered.
He felt like he would lose consciousness any moment, but Randgar endured until the end.
Not to escape the hand gripping his neck.
But to escape the crushing helplessness.
“Keuk… Kuuuugh…”
But no matter how much he thrashed, reality didn’t change.
Contrary to his thoughts, his strength continued to drain, and his mind grew faint.
His struggles weakened, and the black mana that had once filled the air began to thin.
‘Is this… the end?’
His will, which he had been holding onto, also began to waver.
Just as he was about to give up entirely—
Thump.
In Randgar’s dimming and narrowing field of vision, he saw someone.
Someone was floating in the air, staring directly at him.
Thump—
Randgar instinctively knew who the person looking down at him was.
It was the Founder.
At the same time, the fading spark of hope within him began to rekindle.
The Founder had come to save him.
“Ku…!”
‘Now, now is the time!’
Randgar cried out inwardly, but the Founder in the distance didn’t move a muscle.
However, Randgar could clearly see it.
The Founder’s lips were moving slowly.
‘Ah…?’
Even in his half-conscious state, Randgar could distinctly read the Founder’s lips.
Neck. Lace.
The Founder had unmistakably said that.
‘Hah… Hahaha.’
With just those three words, Randgar realized the truth.
He had been abandoned.
The Founder had not come to save him, but to retrieve the necklace.
As the Founder’s intention became clear, Randgar let his body go limp.
The strength drained from his flailing arms and legs, and even his struggling neck went slack.
“…Finally caught you.”
Thud—
Even as his limp body fell to the ground, Randgar made no move.
He hadn’t lost consciousness, but that was all.
Randgar no longer had the strength or the will to resist.
Wooong—
Even with his eyes closed, Randgar could sense it.
The Black Shadow Corps leader had withdrawn their power and was looking down at him.
‘For the revolution…!’
With the last of his strength, Randgar moved.
Not to attack the Black Shadow Corps leader.
He reached into his robe with difficulty and gripped the cold metal inside.
Then, with all the strength he could muster, he threw the necklace outward.
It didn’t travel far, given his drained condition, but Randgar didn’t care.
He threw it as far as he could in his current state.
So that the Founder could retrieve it.
“…What’s this?”
That was the last voice Randgar heard.
The Black Shadow Corps leader, sounding perplexed.
***
“Hah.”
Looking down at Randgar, who lay collapsed with his face red and flushed, I observed him quietly.
I nudged him with my foot, but he didn’t respond. It seemed he had truly lost consciousness this time.
He had been a more troublesome opponent than I’d anticipated.
The dark magic tentacles he carelessly flung around, his relentless resistance—all of it.
Even at the end, when he collapsed unconscious, he suddenly moved, and I thought he was up to something again.
Thankfully, nothing happened.
‘Looked like he threw something.’
At the very end, when he hit the ground, he pulled something from his robe and tossed it. I thought it might be a bomb.
But it wasn’t.
Something shiny had weakly flown through the air, but it wasn’t a bomb or magic.
Instinctively, I checked to see what had been thrown, but there was nothing around.
‘Anyway, the arrest is a success.’
Though questions lingered, securing Randgar was the priority.
I lifted the unconscious Randgar and slung him over my shoulder.
“Whew.”
As the fight ended, the tension dissipated, and fatigue hit me like a wave.
Though my Spatial Movement didn’t require mana, it did demand intense focus.
Especially in situations like this, where it wasn’t just simple teleportation but involved utilizing space itself.
‘I didn’t expect to have to go this far.’
Dark magic was undoubtedly troublesome.
It had been years since I used this technique.
Opening a subspace around my body to absorb all incoming attacks into it.
I hadn’t named the technique, but it was the ultimate defensive and offensive move.
Simply by being near me, all attacks were nullified.
Maintaining such focus had left me unable to speak properly.
Even a slight lapse in concentration could’ve resulted in me being absorbed into the subspace myself.
‘Still, why hasn’t anyone…’
Just as I was about to complain about the lack of reinforcements, someone appeared before me.
A figure stood, pointing a sword at me with a wary expression.
Golden hair swayed in the breeze.
It was Cassis Sinclair.
“V-Vice Principal…!”
“Ah, it’s a misunderstanding.”
“What…?”
Thud—
I tossed Randgar to the ground in front of Cassis.
With Randgar unconscious, the barrier seemed to have lifted, as other professors from the Academy began arriving behind Cassis.
‘Ugh, more people.’
Suppressing my nausea, I quickly spoke.
I needed to leave this place fast.
“This is the culprit. Make sure to investigate and deal with him.”
I gestured toward Randgar, sprawled on the ground.
At my words, Cassis and the other professors turned their attention to Randgar.
And with that, I moved immediately.
Wooong—
I could feel someone behind me preparing a spell directed at me.
I had to flee quickly.
‘Whew, at least the mission’s accomplished.’
Originally, I’d planned to hand Randgar over to Yuria, but things had gotten a bit tangled.
