Chapter 90
‘I should be riding that thing.’
I thought as I watched Greenie walking leisurely in the air, seemingly gauging my reaction.
Greenie strolled around slowly, as if asking, “Is this how I should do it?”
The idea to use Greenie for hunting down hidden remnants came from Addy.
Thanks to the quest, it was certain that the remaining enemies were inside the academy.
The decision was made after pondering how best to show Greenie to those targets.
Though it carried some risks, the plan was to have Greenie roam openly outside for everyone to see.
Of course, I would love to ride Greenie and race over the academy myself.
‘But getting caught would be a disaster.’
The entire continent was already in turmoil over black magic.
Riding Greenie around the academy during such a time wouldn’t be a wise choice.
Even if I disguised myself with a uniform and mask, it wouldn’t change much.
“Well then, shall we wrap it up?”
By now, Greenie had probably made about five laps around the academy.
This much should suffice for today.
‘The bait should be working by now.’
It felt like fishing.
Tonight marked the fifth night of taking Greenie on evening strolls.
With Greenie wandering around every night, someone must have seen it by now.
Rumors about an undead horse flying through the air at night had already started spreading among the students.
I expected some reaction by tonight, but there was none yet.
‘Alright, just as Addy suggested, let’s stick with this for a week.’
“Greenie!”
With that thought, I called for Greenie, ready to head back.
The place where Greenie and I always disappeared was the same—a spot near the ruins of a building that once housed the Principal’s and Vice-Principal’s offices.
At my call, Greenie slowly descended toward me.
And then, it happened.
‘Huh?’
As Greenie was about to touch the ground, I sensed something suspicious.
It was too unusual to be the movement of an ordinary student or staff member.
Vrrrr—
The moment I instinctively picked up on the suspicious presence, I moved far away from Greenie.
Greenie, surprised by my sudden disappearance, looked around in confusion.
And in that moment, someone cautiously stepped out from the dark forest.
‘That’s the one!’
I felt a bit guilty for calling a person “that,” but there was no time for niceties.
The bait had worked at last.
Their suspicious outfit and movements gave them away instantly.
Constantly glancing around and wearing a robe to conceal their appearance—it was all too obvious.
The figure emerging from the forest slowly approached Greenie.
Greenie, noticing someone other than me coming closer, began pawing the ground while watching them.
Had this been the untrained Greenie from before, it would have charged at the intruder immediately.
But now, after thorough training, Greenie was different.
It simply observed the figure cautiously, pawing the ground without making any sudden moves.
‘Alright, gotcha.’
Smirking, I couldn’t help but smile as I watched the suspicious figure inch closer to Greenie.
I could catch them right now, but I had to think bigger.
Capturing one subordinate here wouldn’t reveal the location of their hideout, so I needed to resolve everything in one go.
‘Greenie, just do as they say.’
I thought to myself, watching Greenie paw the ground warily.
Just follow them quietly.
***
Nora.
A member of the Student Council and editor-in-chief of the academy’s weekly magazine.
Nora checked to make sure the artifact was recording the scene properly.
The rumors causing a stir in the academy these past few days.
The undead roaming the academy at night—those rumors were true.
Though she wasn’t entirely sure if that thing was undead or not.
‘This is huge…!’
Nora swallowed nervously as she watched the skeletal horse descending from the sky.
She never thought she’d get to capture it this close.
A skeletal horse wreathed in green flames, floating in the air.
Not only was the rumor confirmed, but she also managed to capture clear evidence of the undead’s identity.
And just then, the undead descended toward the ground.
Nora stared at it blankly as it approached.
Seeing it up close, it wasn’t exactly scary for an undead; rather, it looked oddly majestic.
Its skeletal body was slightly eerie, but the green flames compensated for that.
While she was mesmerized by the horse, someone emerged from the forest.
‘Huh?!’
Nora instinctively flattened herself against the rubble of the ruined building.
It was a purely reflexive action.
Even then, she checked to make sure the artifact was functioning properly.
This was an even bigger scoop than capturing the undead up close.
To think the undead had an owner.
‘No way… someone in the academy is raising an undead horse…!’
Nora’s vivid imagination began spiraling uncontrollably.
The idea that someone within the academy was keeping an undead horse.
Could the undead wyvern that appeared during the recent festival also be related to this person?
She thought everything had ended when Vice-Principal Randgar Bayel was captured, but maybe that wasn’t the case.
Nora felt scared but also a strange sense of duty.
She was determined to capture every last detail of the undead and its owner.
Clip-clop—clip-clop—
As she held her breath, she peeked out upon hearing the sound of hooves.
‘It really is their owner!’
The green-flamed horse was following a robed figure into the forest.
Nora couldn’t contain her excitement as she watched the scene.
This article was a bigger scoop than anything previously published in the Academy Weekly.
It might even surpass the scandal article about the princess who once worked at the academy.
Swoosh—
Nora stood up, carefully erasing her presence further with magic.
Fortunately, the skeletal horse had ventured far ahead, but thanks to the green flames, it was still visible from a distance.
Nora quickly got up and started following.
Her instincts were screaming that this was extremely dangerous, but her curiosity was stronger.
As she moved deeper into the forest, Nora began thinking about potential headlines for her article.
‘The Truth Behind the Dark Rumors? No, that’s too bland. Maybe something with “Undead” in it.’
How far had she gone by now?
Nora realized she had never ventured this deep into the Training Forest, even during lessons.
It felt as though she had reached the very edge of the forest, yet the green flames continued moving forward.
‘Huh, this doesn’t seem right.’
Even though the flames were moving forward, Nora couldn’t shake the feeling that this path wouldn’t lead her anywhere.
The fact that she was aimlessly following the skeletal horse without any specific destination had completely slipped her mind.
She thought she needed to turn back instead of continuing straight ahead.
That thought consumed her entirely.
‘Yeah, there’s nothing ahead if I go this way. I should circle around.’
Just as her unfocused eyes began to shift left, ready to change direction—
“Ugh!”
‘…What?’
The scream of a man from ahead snapped her out of her thoughts.
At the same time, the focus returned to Nora’s gaze as she stared in the direction of the sound.
She was still hesitant to move forward, but she didn’t turn back.
The robed man who had been walking alongside the undead horse was now collapsed on the ground.
‘What’s going on?’
Instinctively, Nora hid behind a tree and checked her artifact.
Being small for her age, she was able to hide completely behind the tree.
The artifact was still functioning normally.
Nora held her breath and sharpened her ears.
And then—
“Who are you?!”
“How did you get here?!”
“So, this is the place!”
Hearing multiple voices ahead, Nora cautiously peeked out.
Though the distance was considerable, the forest was so quiet that she could hear them clearly.
A moment ago, there had only been one person, but now several figures surrounded the undead horse.
At least five of them.
‘What is happening here?’
Nora flattened herself on the ground and observed the situation.
It was anything but peaceful.
One man was already down, and the others—whose origins were unknown—were preparing for battle.
“Are we going in through there?”
“How do we break the barrier… Urgh!”
“Damn it, your boss is already captured! What’s the point of staying here?”
‘Wow, wow, this is insane.’
Gulp—
Nora swallowed nervously and kept her eyes wide open to miss none of the action.
A man dressed in black was quickly knocking down those in white robes.
The men in white robes tried to resist, but it was useless.
With a single swing of his fist, the black-clad man sent the white-robed figures flying.
‘Oh wow, what is this situation?’
The skeletal horse, surrounded by green flames, quietly stepped aside as if giving way.
Nora thought the scene unfolding before her was incredible.
Judging from their words, the undead horse’s owner was definitely affiliated with the Vice-Principal.
Randgar Bayel, the Vice-Principal captured as the mastermind behind the undead wyvern attack during the recent festival.
His forces were still hiding within the academy.
‘This is on a whole different scale!’
At the same time, Nora’s imagination kicked into overdrive.
Randgar Bayel’s remaining forces, lying in wait within the academy for their chance.
And someone stepping in to stop them before they could act.
‘Who is that?’
Watching the white-robed figures fall helplessly, Nora’s curiosity became unbearable.
Swoosh—
That curiosity drove her to move closer.
Even though the danger was obvious, Nora crawled forward as quietly as possible.
She didn’t care if her clothes got dirty.
“Hoo.”
Meanwhile, the battle ended.
The winner, of course, was the black-clad man.
The artifact continued recording the scene clearly.
‘Wow, he took down so many people by himself.’
Nora, filled with awe, kept her eyes fixed on the man in black.
He was scanning his surroundings.
‘Huh?’
Then, as he removed his robe and looked around, she got a clear view.
A black mask covering his face.
‘Wha-what?’
Nora recognized that mask.
It was the mask famously worn by the leader of the Black Shadow Corps.
The so-called Black Mask.
‘Bl-Black Shadow Corps?!’
Nora barely managed to stifle the scream that almost escaped her lips.
