Chapter 6
Where am I? Who am I?
I clearly remember having a duel with Adela last night at the arena, but I can’t recall whether I won or lost.
And somehow, I was now back in my dormitory room.
Did I lose?
Well, there’s no way I could’ve won, after all.
I thought about preparing for class, but then I realized it was already vacation.
Ahhhh! I was supposed to have completed the development of my fertilizer by now and started selling it…
Instead, I was dragged around by the protagonist and got nothing done.
This must be the fate of a pathetic extra.
Sigh, what can I do?
I’ll just have to move quickly from now on.
Come to think of it, the duel probably happened because the semester had already ended.
It felt like I had done a bunch of things over the break, but I’d been so exhausted from training that I didn’t really process any of it.
Now that the protagonist’s demands were finally over, I could focus on my own tasks.
I got dressed, gathered the tools I needed to create the magic circle, and stepped outside.
Thanks to the 100,000 gold I earned from this ordeal, I could now properly construct the magic circle.
Without decent equipment, I might have failed, but that wouldn’t be an issue now.
I should also send some money back to my parents in the countryside, but it’s still too early. Once I start selling the fertilizer, I’ll have an excuse to send money.
As I walked along, carefully planning things out in my head, Elenien approached me.
“Ah, hi, Serupe.”
“What? Elenien, how did you know I was here?”
“I, I couldn’t reach you, so I, um, sent a spirit.”
Following Elenien’s gesture, I looked behind me and found a small spirit clinging to my back.
It looked like a lizard flicking its tongue. I plucked it off and handed it back to Elenien.
Seeing Elenien, whom I hadn’t encountered much recently, made me realize that everything was finally over.
And thinking about the money I had left made me feel even better.
“Elenien, you’ve been looking out for me because I’m weak, haven’t you?”
“Be-because… I’m the only one who can help you, Serupe.”
Embarrassed, Elenien shyly avoided my gaze. When I grabbed her hand, she jumped in surprise.
Was that too much?
I let go of her hand and said,
“I’ll treat you to something delicious. What do you want to eat?”
“Wh-where?”
I hesitated at her question. I had planned to go to the campus store, but maybe that wasn’t the best choice.
“Let’s go eat outside. It’s vacation now, after all. Not that I realized it before…”
“Y-yes, it’s v-vacation. I don’t have anywhere to go, so…”
Nowhere to go, huh?
Most academy students usually visit their hometowns during the break.
But Elenien, who had been wandering forests and streets before being admitted through sponsorship, didn’t have a hometown.
In fact, Elenien’s background was impressive enough that her mother would come looking for her later, but for now…
“Don’t worry, I’ll stay with you.”
“No, it’s not Serupe staying with me. I-it’s me staying with Serupe.”
“Ah, right. Sorry, that was presumptuous of me.”
“It’s fine. We’ll stay together, so…”
Stay together?
She must mean she’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
Anyway, I took Elenien to a restaurant, where we had a light meal before heading outside.
She ate more than I expected…
“Wh-why are you looking at me like that?”
“You eat quite a lot, don’t you?”
Where does it all go?
“I-I didn’t eat all of it! I shared some with the spirits!”
“Really? Spirits don’t even feel hunger, do they?”
“Some s-spirits can taste things, and they l-like it!”
I didn’t realize spirits liked food that much. Maybe that’s the secret to Elenien’s affinity with them.
“I see.”
Though I accepted her explanation, Elenien seemed upset, probably thinking I had teased her.
Was it really enough to make her angry…?
I decided to change the subject.
“Oh, right, Elenien.”
“Y-yes?”
“I think I’ve finally finished developing the fertilizer I mentioned before. I’m doing the final experiment today. Want to come with me? You’ll protect me, right?”
“Yes…!”
With Elenien nodding eagerly, I led her to a quiet clearing.
“This spot should work.”
I laid out the mana stones and magical tools, then used the mana I had accumulated to activate the magic circle.
Through the elements in the air, chemical fertilizer was synthesized and gathered in solid form within a container.
“It worked! It’s being made!”
“Wow, amazing!”
I hugged Elenien in excitement, only to hear her startled scream and immediately let her go.
“Sorry, I got carried away.”
“It’s fine… But as punishment, 500 Eldershoes! As punishment!”
“Alright, I’ll buy them.”
How much would that even cost…?
It was my fault, though.
Next, I found a patch of withered plants and scattered the fertilizer along with some seeds.
“If the plants grow well here, it means the fertilizer works. I’m going to sell this and become rich.”
“R-rich… Serupe’s going to get rich… You can buy me lots of delicious things, then. Hehe…”
“Sure, I’ll treat you.”
Keeping a future Grand Spirit Master close and treating her to some food?
It didn’t feel like a waste of money.
Even just having spirits flying around kept bandits at bay.
If I kept developing chemical fertilizers and expanding the business, I could grow it into a large trade company valuable enough to attract a Grand Spirit Master’s attention.
From the protagonist’s perspective, Elenien wasn’t even a major heroine, so taking her with me shouldn’t matter.
“I’ll need to buy a proper warehouse, contract with traders, and start selling the fertilizer. It’ll mean traveling a lot. Will that be okay?”
“Yes, Serupe…”
Her blank, adorable expression made me want to ruffle her hair.
It was driving me crazy…
I realized I’d been staring at her for too long.
I’d seen enough.
Time to move on.
“Let’s get going.”
“Warehouse?”
I rented a suitable warehouse and set up the magic circle to keep producing chemical fertilizer, securing the area with proper safety measures.
Soon, fertilizer began piling up in one corner of the warehouse.
“Hmm, we need to pack all this into sacks. Do you think the spirits could help?”
When I asked Elenien, earth spirits began flying or crawling around, moving the chemical fertilizer into sacks. Then one of them started eating the fertilizer.
“Hey, you can’t eat that!”
The spirit got scared and ran away.
Wait, was it scared of me?
From a corner, another earth spirit peeked at me, a sprout growing on its head.
“Ah, I-I’m sorry, S-Serupe… It says it’s tasty. I’ll ask the wind spirits for help instead. They’re faster…”
“Still, if one of the earth spirits felt the need to eat the fertilizer, that’s proof it works without needing to test the seeds we planted.”
“I think so too.”
There really are so many spirits…
Seeing how Elenien commands so many spirits, it’s clear she’s a genius.
Heroine stock secured…
I wasn’t sure how Elenien ended up following me around, but I couldn’t be happier!
With Elenien by my side, maybe being an extra isn’t so bad.
Imagining a happy future, I helped pack the fertilizer into sacks. With the spirits’ help, the work was done in no time.
“This amount should be enough to finalize contracts with merchants.”
“R-really?”
As long as I could supply mana, I wouldn’t need additional catalysts to keep the magic circle running.
With a decent production rate, it seemed fine to start dealing with merchants.
They wouldn’t care if it was natural or chemical fertilizer as long as it worked.
We could even demonstrate the product using Elenien’s earth spirits.
I gathered the sacks and headed to the merchants.
“You’re supplying fertilizer? Well, fertilizer demand is growing these days. Is that a sack of fertilizer?”
“Yes.”
“Hmm, it looks… unusual.”
“It works well. Elenien, can you borrow an earth spirit to show them?”
“O-okay, I’ll show them eating it, right?”
“Yeah.”
As the merchant watched with interest, the earth spirit from earlier scurried over and devoured some fertilizer.
“Whoa, is that a sprout growing? This isn’t just magic, is it?”
“Elenien is a pure spirit master. Even the earth spirits like this fertilizer. Its quality is guaranteed.”
“Let’s sign the contract immediately. This will be a valuable addition to our trade items.”
After carefully reviewing the contract, we finalized the deal with a standard profit-sharing arrangement.
“Looking forward to great results.”
“Kid, I’m a veteran in this trade. Trust me. If you can keep up the supply, leave it to the Tails Trading Company. I’ve got connections in every rural village.”
“Of course. Looking forward to working with you.”
“Oh, take this as a bonus—a box of apples for you and that lovely elf lady.”
“Thank you.”
Elenien seemed pleased to be called a lovely elf lady, using her earth spirits to carry the box of apples.
“Shall we head back?”
“Y-yes.”
On the way back to the academy, an earth spirit clung to me.
“…? What’s with this one?”
“I-it says it wants to stay with you instead of me.”
“What?”
“It says it’ll be happy if you give it lots of tasty things.”
The square, rock-like earth spirit trailed behind, spilling dirt around as it hopped around me, then looked up.
It was clearly the one that had tried to steal the fertilizer earlier. Of course, I agreed.
If I could form a contract with a spirit, I’d give it all the fertilizer it wanted!
“Can I really make a contract with it?”
“Yes, Serupe. Since your affinity is a bit lacking, forming a contract will help. I’ll mediate. If you offer fertilizer in exchange, it’ll be your friend.”
“A friend who charges a friendship fee… Well, as long as it works hard for me.”
When I held the dusty little spirit in my hand, it settled down.
After watching the contract finalize, Elenien nodded.
“It’s done. It’s still young, so you might not understand it well for now, but keep giving it fertilizer, and it’ll grow.”
“Who am I? The Earth Spirit Master!”
“Huh? Haha.”
Feeling satisfied, I walked back into the academy with Elenien, only to see someone waving at us.
“Hey, Serupe.”
“Ugh!”
Startled, I dropped the earth spirit I was holding.
Seeing the protagonist, I prepared to flee, but he grabbed me by the collar.
“Geez, why are you trying to run away? That hurts, you know. I just need to talk to you.”
“I-I don’t have anything to say.”
“P-please let go of S-Serupe.”
“Come on, I’m not going to bully him. I just have something to talk about.”
“I’m sorry, I’ll do better! Please let me go! Agh!”
“Don’t worry, I’ll just borrow him for a moment. I’ll bring him back soon.”
Once again, I found myself being dragged along by the protagonist.
Ah, my miserable fate.
What’s going to happen to me now…?
