Chapter 47
“Oh, so you don’t care that I’m inside Muriela’s body?”
Solinor asked Aiorin in surprise.
Of course, he knew that elves and humans had different values, but she didn’t seem to care at all that Solinor’s body had changed.
“To be precise, as long as the soul I’m speaking to is my dear, I don’t mind. The body doesn’t matter. You’re still you.”
The soul I’m speaking to? That’s a bit complicated.
Although Solinor had spent many years with Aiorin, there were still times when he couldn’t understand her words.
This was one of those times.
How had they maintained such a good relationship for so long despite this? Love, perhaps.
“Hmm, sorry for nitpicking your explanation, but could you elaborate? I’m having trouble understanding.”
Aiorin beamed at his words.
Though she was still a bit of a rascal, it seemed she had matured a little over the years.
In the past, she would’ve said, “Why can’t you understand something so simple!”
It appeared even elves grew by getting smacked over the head with a frying pan—or so Aiorin’s mother, who was busy with her second child in the elf village, would proudly say.
“Remember when I said earlier that Muriela’s body smelled like you?”
Solinor recalled the earlier situation.
At that time, Aiorin, disguised as the Sixth Queen, had said those words.
Back then, he thought she was insane.
But now that he knew she was Aiorin, well, she still seemed a little crazy.
Knowing it was her granddaughter, how could she act like that?
It was clear Solinor had been mistaken in thinking Aiorin had matured.
Just as he was about to conclude this, Solinor remembered that elves could sense souls.
So when she mentioned a smell, was she referring to sensing his soul inside Muriela?
“Ah, I see. You were talking about my soul?”
“Yes. When I saw Muriela’s weak, childlike soul with your large, powerful one attached, I thought it was odd. I figured it must be a very deep connection.”
Thinking he was having an affair with an eight-year-old was a bit much, though.
Still, since it was in the past, he decided to let it go.
It wasn’t like anyone got hurt.
…Well, not entirely true, but never mind.
“But a child’s soul? Are you referring to Muriela’s soul? And what do you mean my soul is attached to hers?”
“Of course, I can sense Muriela’s soul. This body belongs to her, after all. Your soul feels like it’s tethered outside her body.”
“Outside… So Muriela’s soul is alive and well. That’s a relief.”
Solinor sighed in relief.
Ever since he realized he had possessed his granddaughter’s body, this had been his greatest concern.
He had worried he might have stolen the life of young Muriela, whose bright future lay ahead.
He had also worried he might never be able to return her body to her.
Now that he knew Muriela’s soul was intact, Solinor felt much lighter.
He just needed to create a better world for Muriela to live in and return the body to her.
That had been the plan from the start, but he wasn’t sure it was possible.
But wait, even if Muriela’s soul was fine, he still didn’t know how to return her body.
“Hey, Aiorin. I have a question.”
“Hmm? What is it, dear?”
Solinor hesitated for a moment, wondering if it was okay to ask his wife this after reuniting after so long.
But he decided to just go for it since he’d already started speaking.
Strike while the iron is hot, as they say.
“So, can I return Muriela’s body to her in the future?”
Even after speaking the words, fear lingered in his heart.
How would Aiorin react?
Could she accept that he would have to leave the world again?
“Of course, you can do that even now.”
“What?”
But Aiorin answered without a hint of hesitation or distress.
Her face carried the same bright smile as before, showing no sign of seriousness.
‘What’s going on? Is there something I don’t know? There’s no way Aiorin wouldn’t care about me disappearing.’
During his death, she had wept and clung to him, heartbroken.
And now her attitude had changed?
Of course, what seemed sudden to him might have been a shift in perspective over the decades for Aiorin.
Realizing this, Solinor suddenly felt a pang of sadness.
‘I still can’t imagine losing Aiorin, but it seems she doesn’t feel the same way.’
Of course, it wasn’t something Solinor couldn’t understand.
Elves were a race that lived so long that calling them immortal wasn’t entirely incorrect compared to humans.
If they didn’t properly prepare for the eventual parting with other races, the mental anguish could be devastating.
Perhaps this was the right way to handle it.
However, based on what Aiorin said next, it seemed that wasn’t exactly what she meant.
“It’s not up to you whether you return the body or not. The moment Muriela decides she wants to use her body alone, you’ll lose control over it.”
“So, you’re saying it’s up to Muriela?”
“Exactly. Neither you nor I have the right to decide. This body belongs to our granddaughter, our lovely Muriela.”
Now Solinor finally understood.
He now knew why he sometimes couldn’t control the body and why Aiorin had such a composed attitude earlier.
It turned out that Muriela, not Solinor, was the one leading this shared relationship between their souls.
She had merely left most of the daily control to him.
In one sense, it was a sad realization.
How depressed and lonely must this young child have been to surrender most of her time and simply retreat to watch from the sidelines?
On the other hand, it was also a source of joy for a grandfather.
The fact that Muriela accepted his presence allowed him to continue living through her body.
He had heard of grandparents feeling heartbroken over their cold and distant grandchildren, but Muriela wasn’t like that at all.
On the contrary, she had given her grandfather a place in her room—no, her body—and spent time with him.
“Then I suppose that’s a relief. At least I’m not erasing Muriela’s life or obstructing her future. That’s truly a relief.”
“Of course, I’ll be devastated if you leave again. But what can I do? You’ve already died once. I’m just grateful that you came back and can talk to me like this.”
Aiorin suddenly seemed much wiser, as if having a moment of clarity.
But Solinor found her suspicious.
Wasn’t she the same person who had thrown a tantrum about an affair just a while ago?
“Aiorin, why did you get so angry about an affair earlier? I’m already dead. Why would it even matter?”
“That’s that, and this is this! I thought you’d come back with your original body! I could feel your soul return even from our village. And body or no body, you’re mine! Did you think I’d let some other woman have you?”
Aiorin’s face turned fierce for a moment, but she quickly broke into a mischievous smile as if it was just a joke.
It was the same expression Solinor remembered from her younger days.
Though he thought she had grown wiser over the years, it was clear that Aiorin was still Aiorin—childish and possessive.
Solinor smiled.
“Don’t worry. I’ll never do anything like that. Not that I could even if I wanted to. Anyway, take care of Muriela’s body until she wants to use it herself.”
“Of course, dear.”
At that moment, a sudden thought struck Solinor.
“Wait a second. Sylvius stored his soul in a mana stone and reincarnated after his death. Do you think I could do the same?”
However, Aiorin seemed startled by something entirely different.
“Sylvius? Sylvius died?”
“Huh? You didn’t know?”
Come on, woman, at least check in on your old companions.
Do you even know how old that man would’ve been if he were still alive? Humans don’t live forever…
“Well, I never sensed his soul leaving this world, so I assumed he was still alive.”
That… actually made sense.
If she couldn’t sense his soul departing, then…
“In that case, do you think I could transfer my soul like he did and be reborn?”
“I’m not sure since I don’t know how that works. But if it’s possible, I’d be thrilled. I’d get to see you again, so why wouldn’t I be happy?”
Solinor now had something he absolutely had to ask Sylvius when they met again.
The unexpected discovery during his conversation with Aiorin excited Solinor immensely.
So much so that his body almost bounced in joy.
Wait, that wasn’t him. It was Muriela, wasn’t it?
It seemed his granddaughter was happy about the idea of her grandfather being reborn.
Or perhaps she was just excited at the prospect of regaining her body.
Either way, there was no way to ask her.
