The Military Veteran Elementary School Girl’s Journey to the Throne Chapter 8

Chapter 8

The moment Kaelen said “I’ll start,” he began moving.
In front of his beloved younger sister, he performed both the basic and advanced moves of offense and defense without hesitation.
Even to Solinor, who didn’t know much about formal swordsmanship, Kaelen’s movements were sharp, smooth, and swift.
Contrary to what Kaelen said, there was nothing shameful about his skill.

Solinor imagined himself sparring against Kaelen back in his prime.
Of course, he adjusted Kaelen’s body to an adult’s size.
In this scenario, Solinor used an ordinary sword, without the holy sword, blessings, or physical enhancements.
If that were the case, Kaelen wouldn’t be someone he could easily overpower.

Even after demonstrating for a significant amount of time, Kaelen’s breathing didn’t change at all.
For the past five years, he had never skipped a day of training, so he had an abundance of stamina.
Moreover, he was still in the middle of his growth, a period when energy seemed to overflow.

When Kaelen finished all his moves, Muriela’s hands instinctively began clapping.

“What? Brother, didn’t you say you weren’t good? Even though I don’t know much, it looks like you’re doing very well!”

Her innocent and sincere compliment.
However, Kaelen’s mood didn’t improve.
He had far loftier goals in mind.

“This is just the basics. There’s something I really want to do, but it’s not working out.”

‘If this is the basics, then what’s the advanced level like? Has swordsmanship really evolved this much in just 35 years?’

Solinor was astonished at how quickly he had become outdated.

“This is basic? It looks incredibly useful. At this level, it would be extremely effective in real combat against enemies.”

Kaelen was confused by Muriela’s words.

‘Real combat?’

Muriela, who had never once stepped outside the royal palace.
He couldn’t comprehend how such a word could come from her mouth.
In fact, the mere idea that she knew what real combat meant was astonishing.

“Muriela, have you seen real combat before? I haven’t even seen it.”
“Of course not, but, well, it just seems like it would be. You’re so skilled.”

‘That was close. This kid is sharp. As expected of my grandson.’

Solinor broke into a cold sweat, nearly making a slip of the tongue.
At this point, Solinor, unknowingly becoming a doting grandparent, was praising whatever his grandchildren did.

Although he was nervous that Kaelen might question further, it wasn’t necessary.
Kaelen decided to overlook whatever Muriela said.
After all, the fact that she was speaking fluently was strange and surprising enough.

“Hah!”

With a confident shout, Kaelen leapt into the air.
However, unlike before, he quickly lost his balance and collapsed.

“It’s still not working.”
“Brother, what was that just now?”
“It’s something General Hadwin showed me when I was younger. He said it was a technique Grandpa used during his adventuring days. But after learning swordsmanship, I’ve tried to replicate those moves, but I always fail and fall.”

‘Oh no, is that what it was? Of course, that would never work…’

Solinor was dumbfounded.

‘I didn’t use that technique because I wanted to! From a swordsmanship perspective, that’s a complete embarrassment!’

Back in his prime, Solinor faced powerful foes daily, where techniques were considered a luxury.
When fighting a dragon, swordsmanship techniques were the least of his concerns.
With blessings enveloping his body and the holy sword enhancing his strength,
he fought by soaring tens of meters in the air, slashing, stabbing, and kicking in close combat.

Now, Solinor was at a loss for how to explain things to Kaelen.
The fact that his grandson was determined to unearth and replicate the chaotic techniques from his past left him speechless.

Of course, no matter how much Muriela tried to dissuade Kaelen, his resolve would likely remain unchanged.
As they say, you can’t force someone who doesn’t want to do something, but you also can’t stop someone determined to do something.
Kaelen was filled with a desire to follow in the footsteps of his admired grandfather.

‘Wait a minute. Is Hadwin still serving as a general? The last time I checked the calendar, it had been 35 years since I died. That means he’s over 70 now!’

Solinor suddenly became curious about the well-being of his old friend.

“Brother, what’s General Hadwin doing now?”
“Hmm? General Hadwin? He retired long ago, but he attended an event one day, got drunk, and excitedly showed off the technique. He’s probably resting at home now.”
“When did you see him?”
“It was when I was 8, so about five years ago.”

‘Five years ago? So, he was 75? He demonstrated swordsmanship while drunk at that age? Wow, that’s impressive. I died when I was only 40.’

Well, technically, Solinor had returned somehow.

‘And Kaelen is only 13 now, right? For his age, his skills are quite remarkable. What was I doing at that age?’

Solinor felt guilty for underestimating his grandson’s talent based on what others had said.

“Then, could you teach me swordsmanship too?”
“What? Why would a girl like you want to learn this?”

It was true.
If Princess Muriela ever needed to use swordsmanship, wouldn’t that mean the kingdom had already fallen?

However, there was a major flaw in that logic.
The truth was that Kaelen was learning swordsmanship as more of a hobby.
After all, there was almost no situation where a prince would need to use swordsmanship in real combat.
It’s not as if they were paying all that money for royal guards just to sit around doing nothing.

“Adeline… she learns poetry and musical instruments, but it’s not because she’ll need to use them, right? She’s not planning to become a bard.”
“Huh? Well, you’re right. There are a lot of things we do just for fun or as a hobby.”

Kaelen was struck by her argument. He began to think deeply.
This was Muriela’s perfect opportunity.

“So, what’s it going to be? Will you teach me swordsmanship?”
“Well, I’ll have to think about it. I can’t come here freely whenever I want. There are people watching me. I’ve come here today after much consideration.”

Once again, Kaelen brought up the topic of being watched.

“Brother, why can’t you come and go as you please? You’re a prince. It’s not like there’s any danger here.”
“It’s not because it’s dangerous. It’s because Mother and the other queens don’t get along. The attendants and maids that Mother assigned to me report back to her if I visit the other queens.”

‘Son! What are you doing, not managing your wives properly?’
Solinor’s opinion of Eldric had dropped once again.

He already knew that Eldric had multiple queens.
It wasn’t surprising.
Although Solinor himself had been wholly devoted to Aiorin, it wasn’t unusual for kings to have multiple wives.
But the fact that the queens weren’t getting along was a bigger problem than he had thought.

While Solinor wasn’t a fan of books, history was an exception.
What was history, after all? To him, it was just old stories.
And with little entertainment available, there was nothing more interesting than old tales.

According to history, women’s conflicts were not to be underestimated.
Many countries had crumbled because of internal strife among women.
In fact, issues triggered by internal conflict were often more deadly than invasions by foreign enemies.

The happenings among the king’s women within the royal heart were significant.
Sometimes they were a great blessing, other times they threatened the safety of the entire kingdom.

“So, is it impossible? I really want to try…”

Muriela looked up at Kaelen with eyes like a hungry kitten.
Kaelen had always felt sorry for his frail younger sister, so there was no way he could resist.

“Haah, alright. Anyway, since everyone’s attention is focused on Crown Prince Alfred’s succession, fewer eyes are on me now. So I’ll come whenever I can to teach you. I can’t promise how often, though.”

‘Wait, succession? So he’s not the eldest? Wouldn’t it be too weird if I didn’t know that?’
Solinor tried hard to suppress his curiosity.
Not that it mattered—there were plenty of things Muriela didn’t know, after all.

“Really? Thanks! I’ll be waiting!”

Kaelen wanted to spend more time with the newly healthy Muriela, but his time was limited.

“Well, I think I should go now. I’ve already stayed longer than I intended. It was so good to see you again, Muriela. I hope I can continue to see you like this, looking so healthy.”
“Okay, Brother, take care!”
“Alright, stay well.”

With that, Prince Kaelen left Princess Muriela’s garden.
He felt both amazed by Muriela’s desire to learn and delighted by her adorable request.

‘My sweet little sister. She’s relying on me so much.’

What kind of brother could refuse such a request?
At least Kaelen couldn’t.

Meanwhile, Solinor felt proud.
He didn’t want to bother Eldric, who was busy with state affairs.
Now, he had found a competent swordsmanship teacher for Muriela without needing to trouble his son.

***

After Kaelen left, Muriela took a shower and got ready for bed.
As always, she wore her cute pink pajamas.

Solinor began to plan.
He was creating a full package course for his granddaughter’s healthy development, so to speak, as she wandered into dreamland.

First, after Muriela’s eighth birthday, they would need to decide which subjects she should study.

Several questions sprang to Solinor’s mind:

Which subjects would be the most useful?
How many subjects could she take?
What options were available?

According to Adeline, she studied etiquette, history, poetry, and instruments. Kaelen learned swordsmanship.

‘History will definitely be useful. And it’s interesting too.’

It had been one of Solinor’s favorite subjects during his lifetime.

‘Poetry or musical instruments aren’t my thing. There must be more practical subjects out there.’

Unknowingly, Solinor was actively reflecting his own preferences in these decisions.
Though he claimed to be choosing subjects for Muriela, it was clear that his own tastes were heavily influencing him.

However, there was a problem—Solinor’s own education was too limited.
No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t think of any other useful subjects.

While Solinor was lost in thought, Princess Muriela arrived in dreamland, her fragile legs having walked and walked.
