The Regressed Genius PD Doesn’t Hide His Talent Chapter 49

Chapter 49

‘Before the B Team director came down, the assistant director and I ended up filming other sub-scenes as well.’

The staff was overjoyed upon hearing the news.

Whether the staff starved or not, he went to the Gamjatang Restaurant alone and ate pork bone soup.

‘I bet it felt like getting hit with a bone.’

However, Lee Beom-un had no choice but to follow Oh Youngguk to Seoul without complaint.

From the very first day of the miniseries shoot, he had caused an incident that got him taken to a military base. He had no excuse, even if he had ten mouths.

When Oh Youngguk saw the footage Lee Beom-un had filmed, he frowned, saying the quality difference compared to the bridge scene was too great.

[I told you to learn from Director Ma when shooting the one-act drama.]

Hearing Oh Youngguk quietly scolding Lee Beom-un, Kim Doyun happened to overhear and clicked his tongue.

Cinematographer Ma Gitae.

When Ma Gitae filmed, even beef bone soup seemed to act, and the savory aroma practically seeped through the screen—an industry legend.

‘But to think Oh Youngguk actually convinced Ma Gitae, who was practically retired due to a leg injury.’

The one-act dramas Lee Beom-un directed both had urban settings.

At the time, Kim Doyun thought the urban setting was chosen just to pair him with Ma Gitae as the cinematographer.

There was no need to carry heavy equipment up steep mountains or hang dangerously from railings for filming.

But Oh Youngguk had gone so far as to bring in Ma Gitae just to spoon-feed Lee Beom-un.

‘There’s no way two one-act dramas shot with a master would suddenly improve his skills.’

What Lee Beom-un failed to internalize in seven years as an assistant director wasn’t going to become his overnight just because he shot two one-act dramas.

Eventually, until B Team Director Jang Sang-gu arrived in Seoul, they decided to film the non-dialogue scenes.

“Did you meet Director Oh? I heard he’s heading down to Jeongdongjin.”

Hearing Moon Sungil’s voice coming from the receiver, Kim Doyun narrowed his eyes.

“Did you speak with the director?”

[Director Oh and I were college classmates. He called me after receiving the audience tickets, so I mentioned you, Producer Kim.]

The two Music Campfire audience tickets Kim Doyun had sent Oh Youngguk.

It seemed Oh Youngguk had called Moon Sungil after receiving them.

“It was thanks to you, Director Moon.”

[Did Director Oh mention me?]

“Thanks to you, I got scolded less. I made a rather reckless remark.”

He had boldly declared that he would become a successful cheap drama producer.

The look on Oh Youngguk’s face when he heard that was still vivid.

As if he were thinking—Is this guy a fraud or a genius?

[It wasn’t Producer Kim saying something out of place, but rather that Youngguk must’ve done something to deserve hearing that.]

“You overestimate me so much it makes me dizzy.”

[Hahaha. I know you’re not the type to get lightheaded over mere words. When I scout new singers, do you think I look at their voices first? No, I look at their eyes.]

Moon Sungil had once told him that his eyes were alive.

That they overflowed with confidence that he would make it big in his field.

‘Director Moon has a sharp eye.’

Kim Doyun smiled slightly as he spoke into the phone.

“I should work even harder so you won’t be disappointed.”

[I’ll do my best too. By the way, I called because I wanted to check if you needed more audience tickets after giving some to Director Oh.]

Moon Sungil had given Kim Doyun a total of five tickets.

After giving two to Oh Youngguk, three remained.

Hearing that Moon Sungil was willing to provide more if needed, Kim Doyun smiled and replied.

“I already have enough.”

[That’s good to hear. For this performance, we’re installing an elevator under the stage so singers can rise up as part of the performance. What do you think? There won’t be any accidents, right?]

The incident in Angel’s Fall had happened when a wire was used to lower a singer from the ceiling of the studio.

So they had thought of raising them from below instead.

But even that didn’t seem entirely safe.

The stage was quite high, meaning the lift would have to raise them at least three meters.

‘Still, I can’t tell them not to try new things.’

As Kim Doyun stroked his chin, his gaze landed on the audio team fitting foam pop filters on microphones to block wind noise.

“How about adding one more safety feature?”

***

“Cut!”

As the sun set beyond the mountains, the sky quickly darkened, and stars began to appear.

The brightly lit squid boats raced toward their fishing grounds, perfectly framed in the golden ratio of the camera’s angle. Min Kyungho finally called for a cut.

‘Even shooting from a hill instead of the coast, we still managed to capture such a beautiful scene.’

Satisfied with the results, the cinematographer gave a thumbs-up.

With that, all the bridge scene shoots in Jeongdongjin were complete.

Walking past the staff dismantling equipment, Kim Doyun approached Min Kyungho.

“Great work, everyone. Seo Dongjin is free right now. How about taking one more shot?”

Min Kyungho jumped in surprise.

“Even if it’s B Team, Director Jang Sang-gu has a vicious temper. Do you want to hear his wrath?”

“I think he’d actually thank me. It’s going to rain tomorrow. Look over there.”

Kim Doyun pointed toward the fishing village below the hill.

“They’ve cleared away all the drying squid, seaweed, and flatfish. See that?”

“Oh, you’re right.”

“Fishermen know. Tomorrow, it’s going to rain. Probably starting around dawn.”

“As expected of a local! But if we do a night shoot?”

Smiling, Kim Doyun pointed to the other side of the hill.

A sandy beach, slightly away from the coast. But with the right camera angles, it could create the illusion of a seaside shot.

“Wow, perspective tricks!”

“As expected, Producer Kim Doyun knows his stuff!”

Min Kyungho and the staff gave Kim Doyun a thumbs-up.

“But still, to think you knew someone at the military base. Producer Kim, your connections are really something.”

The comment was in reference to Lee Beom-un being released from the military base, as well as the previous police station shoot.

Kim Doyun scratched the back of his head and replied.

“It wasn’t me, but thanks to my mother. The sergeant major is a regular at my mother’s snack shop.”

“She really is an amazing cook.”

As the cinematographer packed up the equipment, he praised Shin Sun-ok’s cooking skills.

Hearing this, Assistant Director Min Kyungho tilted his head in confusion.

“…But then, why last night…”

“What about last night?”

“I mean, about Director Lee Beom-un. Couldn’t he have been released right away?”

“I was tired last night.”

“You… you were tired, I see.”

Realizing Kim Doyun’s true intentions, Min Kyungho shuddered slightly as if he had just felt a chill.

“By any chance, Assistant Director, if you’d like to work with Director Lee…”

“No, absolutely not! What are you saying!”

Min Kyungho frantically waved his hands, and the rest of the staff, including the cinematographer, burst into laughter.

At that moment, the lighting team leader frowned and spoke.

“No matter how much we keep our mouths shut, word will spread in the industry that Director Lee was practically kicked out and sent to Seoul. Producer Kim, will you be okay?”

“…Is there a reason I shouldn’t be?”

“I just hope those broadcasting station guys don’t act petty about it.”

It was likely a concern that Lee Beom-un would hold a grudge.

“Speaking of which, I’m heading up to Seoul tonight.”

“What about here?”

“The junior producer will be arriving soon.”

Originally, Kim Doyun had signed a contract stating that he would take weekends off.

But with the rest of the staff working without breaks, he couldn’t bring himself to say it aloud.

‘The junior can cover for me.’

Once Jang Sang-gu, who had extensive on-site experience, was brought in, there wasn’t much need for Kim Doyun to be the one managing things.

“Oh, here he comes. The junior.”

“Hello, hyung!”

With short hair and a stocky build, Song Young-gu ran over, sweating profusely as he greeted everyone.

A hometown junior of Kim Doyun, Young-gu had enrolled in the academy through his introduction but was drafted for military service.

He had only been discharged two weeks ago.

“This is our new junior, who will be assisting me from now on.”

As Kim Doyun introduced him, Young-gu saluted the staff.

“Unity! I am Song Young-gu! Having answered my country’s call, I have completed my military service faithfully and returned. Unity!”

Hearing his loud voice, the cinematographer smiled warmly.

Given how heavy the camera was, plus carrying batteries in the sweltering summer heat, it was not an easy task.

“Looks like you still have that military discipline in you. Must be strong, judging by those arms.”

“I’m ready for any task!”

“First, wipe off that sweat. You’re going to short-circuit something.”

The cinematographer tossed the towel he had around his neck, and Young-gu quickly caught it with both hands.

“Thank you!”

“Relax your voice a bit.”

“Yes, sirrrr.”

Hearing Young-gu’s deflated response, everyone burst into laughter.

“So you’re heading out now?”

Excited about the trip to Seoul, Shin Sun-ok put on her shoes and grabbed her bag.

Seeing his mother’s bright smile, Kim Doyun couldn’t help but smile himself, feeling energized.

“I just need to relay a message to Seo Dongjin, then I’ll be leaving.”

“Dongjin is in the backyard.”

Hearing how naturally his mother called Seo Dongjin by name, Kim Doyun tilted his head in confusion.

“Dongjin?”

“He’s the same age as Dohoon. Since he said he didn’t have a mother, I told him I’d take him in as my son.”

It wasn’t just Seo Dongjin—Shin Sun-ok had also offered to be a mother to Seong Soyoung and Jo Soojin.

“You really don’t have to do that…”

“Oh, why not? Dongjin even teared up, saying he was so grateful.”

“That was all acting…”

“Hm?”

“Nothing. If it makes you happy, then go ahead. I’ll just consider it as having another little brother.”

When he played the role of a chaebol, he acted all proud and aloof.

But once he revealed he was an orphan, his demeanor completely changed.

He played the part of the most fragile being, drawing sympathy from middle-aged women.

And when it came to women his age, he worked hard to draw their attention.

‘Wait a minute!’

As he walked past the living room, Kim Doyun suddenly asked his mother.

“What about Dohee? She should be home from school by now.”

“Oh, she went to make malted grain drink for Dongjin in the backyard.”

“When?”

“Come to think of it… a while ago?”

Rushing outside, Kim Doyun arrived at the backyard and heard Dohee’s laughter coming from a bench beneath the bamboo grove.

“Oh wow, oppa! That’s amazing! How do you guess it so perfectly?”

“I have a bit of a sixth sense, you see. Even actors ask me to read their palms…”

Noticing Kim Doyun, Seo Dongjin quickly let go of Dohee’s hand and stepped back.

“Producer? Is something wrong? Why do you look so…”

With a hardened expression, Kim Doyun ignored his question and turned to Dohee.

“We’re leaving. Get ready.”

“Okay. But, oppa! Dongjin oppa was saying…”

“Mom’s waiting.”

Cutting her off, he urged her to prepare for departure before finally turning to Seo Dongjin.

“Seo Dongjin, I need a word with you.”

“Huh? Oh, sure.”

For the time being, Kim Doyun wouldn’t be able to come down to Jeongdongjin, as he’d be assisting with the drama script and handling other tasks.

Thinking about staff frequently coming and going from the house, where his overly kind mother and underage sister lived alone, he couldn’t help but worry.

So he had hoped Seo Dongjin would act as a reliable protector.

‘But what is this? I might as well be asking a wolf to guard a flock of sheep. Or is it the other way around?’

His sister Dohee was a hopeless romantic when it came to good-looking men, after all.
