Chapter 11
It seemed that finally, the goddess had taken pity on Mia and bestowed upon her divine power.
In a daze, Mia opened her hand. A red orb the size of a coin spun in circles on her palm.
‘Will it grow bigger?’
Just as she thought that, the orb expanded to the size of an egg.
‘I hope it gets even bigger.’
The orb grew to the size of a small book, filling the room with a red glow. Mia smiled at the orb, which seemed to follow her wishes as if it understood her words. Although she didn’t want to admit it, she felt an overwhelming joy at that moment.
‘Considering what happened earlier, this might actually be useful for self-defense. I wonder if I can use it like Rochefort did, by wrapping it around my sword?’
While it was possible, she would need to practice for delicate control. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t do to wield a sword wrapped in divine power carelessly in the cramped barracks. If the walls broke, she would have nowhere to sleep.
Thus, Mia decided to take a secondary approach and envelop her fist in divine power. She had heard since childhood that divine power was difficult to handle and required training for proper use, but surprisingly, the red energy moved according to her will without much resistance.
Mia’s fist grew hot. Perhaps it was just her imagination. Was divine power not supposed to emit both light and heat? A sudden doubt crossed her mind.
Mia swung her fist through the air. The trajectory of light she had seen a few hours ago sliced through the air with a whooshing sound.
When had she last felt this exhilarated? The excitement made her feel as if her body were on fire.
Encouraged by her newfound ability, Mia began to surround everything in her room with divine power. This was a test of how well she could utilize her powers.
As a result, the pillow, bedding, dresser, medicine bottles, and letters all glowed with a red hue, floating in the air.
Somehow, she felt lighter.
No, was it really just a feeling?
In truth, she…
When Mia touched her cheek, she was astonished by the searing heat. She had never heard of such side effects accompanying the use of divine power, and she found it hard to understand what was happening.
And then,
Thud.
She lost consciousness with a sound whose source she could not discern.
***
Two people were conversing behind the secluded barracks.
“…Your Grace.”
The voice calling her name was more subdued than usual. Mia couldn’t grasp what he was trying to say.
“…”
In a place untouched by moonlight, a man half-buried in deep darkness was staring at her.
“About the power you just used…”
“Don’t beat around the bush. Is something wrong?”
“No, it’s not that.”
“What is it?”
Mia’s voice was irritated. But could she be blamed? She had just been overjoyed to finally possess a power that had eluded her until the moment of her death. Now that it had finally fallen into her hands, he was stalling without properly explaining, which made it all the more frustrating.
“When divine power users utilize their powers, the light emitted is usually white.”
“…Is that so?”
“Yes. So, I thought it necessary to confirm whether your ability is indeed divine power… I apologize.”
Since she was chosen by the goddess, it was entirely possible for her to emit a different color. Étienne quickly added this and apologized to her again.
Receiving an apology made Mia turn away with a frown. Rather than engage in a debate over whether the suddenly appearing mysterious power was divine power or something no one had known about until now, she wanted to return to her room and test the limits of this ability.
“Mia.”
As she began to walk away, Étienne called out to her. Mia didn’t look back but halted as if to indicate he should speak.
“You should… refrain from using that power for the time being.”
His voice became hazy beyond the fading consciousness.
***
“Are you awake?”
Whether it was a dream or a memory, upon waking, she saw a familiar face. However, it was the first time she was seeing it in this life.
“…Vice commander Pavel.”
The person abruptly called by name appeared startled.
“Your Grace, I am not the Vice-Commander. I believe you are mistaking me for someone else.”
“But….”
Xavier Pavel. He had been the proud Vice-Commander of the 1st Holy Corps, serving under Rochefort, who had also been a legion commander in Mia’s previous life.
Unlike Mia, who had been largely dismissed, he had enjoyed quite a glamorous treatment within the military, as he also served as a practical operations officer.
In fact, there were many instances where operations she proposed were attributed to him, so it had been years since she had built up resentment towards him without realizing it.
‘But for him to say he’s not the Vice-Commander?’
In her hazy mind, as Mia stared blankly into space, she soon remembered that he had not always held the position of Vice-Commander from the start.
He had been hastily promoted after Léonard had been executed for colluding with the enemy. Sadly, in that regard, the current Léonard was quite innocent.
In that case, Xavier’s rank was at best that of a mere officer. And not even a high-ranking one.
As Mia didn’t respond, Xavier began reporting on her condition.
“You had a high fever. You muttered many unintelligible words in between.”
“Is that so?”
“I suppose your consciousness was absent the whole time, given that you don’t remember anything. I did expect that.”
“You even checked that?”
“It was hard to miss, even without confirming. For some reason, you kept calling for the Commander.”
“…Please don’t say anything that could be misunderstood?”
